If Calzaghe had the balls to travel outside of Wales and fight legit fighters (in his weight class (Jones Jr., Glen Johnson) or outside his weight class instead of a steady line of chumps, he could have been an all time great and we would have seen some great fights... what a shame.
Please, will some of you just leave and never come back? You're posts aren't good enough for me or anyone with intelligence to read.
Place me a date in which Calzaghe could have realistically fought Roy Jones Jr for a fair price and I'll donate you all my points.
November 1996: Jones Jr has his final fight at 168 with Brannon.
November 1997: Calzaghe beats Eubank to win the WBO title at 168.
Could Calzaghe have moved up to chase a fight? Yes. Would he have got one? Unlikely for anything but an insulting payday and even then, many bigger names failed to get a shot at Jones Jr. Let's hypothetically say that Jones Jr offered Calzaghe a shot, with a likely 70-30 split in Jones Jr's favour at best, why would Calzaghe accept this? No way should a world champion have to accept that. Calzaghe's plan was to build a big enough name at 168 before moving up, so he could claim a fair slice of the pie. The problem was that, other than Ottke who avoided Calzaghe like the plague, there weren't big enough fights for Calzaghe at 168. Hopkins wasn't about to jump up a weight while he could defend his belts at 160 comfortably and the best left were former champions like Mitchell. 175 was in a similar state, with the notable exception of Jones Jr himself. There was no point in Calzaghe dropping his belt for similarly small name opponents.
Calzaghe finally got his opportunity with Lacy, but it was a little late.
May 2004: Jones Jr gets knocked out by Tarver.
March 2006: Calzaghe beats Lacy, finally getting the name he wanted.
It's easy for a boxing fan to say that Calzaghe should have fought him for whatever would have been offered, but fundamentally it's a job and a world champion expects better.
As for Hopkins, well we know the story. Calzaghe wanted him years ago, but Hopkins pulled out at the last minute.
Don't get me wrong, I won't defend Calzaghe about everything. For instance, I think he should have gone after Tarver once Jones Jr had been dethroned and I am extremely dissapointed that he has chosen Jones Jr over Pavlik. Calzaghe doesn't deserve the criticism he gets over this though.
A Calzhage fan talking about credibility..lol
Ain't that a bitch.
So all fans of a fighter you personally don't like, should have no credibility from no one. Riiiight.
Out of interest, do you vote, democratically? Don't get into politics or join anything which requires objective, unbiased judhing, you'll be stamping your views around and wound up shot.

If you knew anything about boxing, you wouldn't even make that argument because it'll work against you. Popkins like the little slut he is, priced himself out in the last minute, everything was set until Popkins called Warren to price himself out of the fight.
If Joe had the goods to beat the UNDESPUTED Hopkins he would have..he knew he couldn't so he stayed his SCARY ass in Wales...hiding behind the weakest Title in boxing(WBO)
Joe couldn't even DENT the shot 43 y/o version of Hopkins...Lord knows he couldn't do shit with the younger version...nothing but get whipped across the ring like the bitch he is.
Hopkins KO'd Johnson...Joe DUCKED him..
Hopkins KO'd Echols...Joe DUCKED him..
Bitch-Joe was SUPPOSED to fight the WINNER of Echols/Brewer...but that SISSY chose to fight the LOSER....LOL
That is one the bitchyest moves in boxing.
Only an insecure f@g could support such a chump.
It's almost like you didn't read what you were quoting, or any prior quotes, weird.
A recent poll on the forum effectively put Hopkins as LHW #2 behind only Calzaghe, so that shits all over your age excuse hater. You've quite lamely lost the argument every left right and centre, along with any credibility.
I'll give Hopkins the benefit of the doubt
He EARNED it.
Go ahead and take the word of the biggest coward in boxing history over an ATG..
Calzaghe has comfortably defeated two younger and arguably hungrier champions in his own weight class in the last two years, both considered to be number two in the division at the time and one of them exceptionally talented, when was the last time Hopkins done that?
Even so..Why didn't Joe fight Hopkins when he was UNDESPUTED at 160???
Because Hopkins agreed to a fight then asked for double the money he agreed in principle to 24 hours later. Does that answer your question?
They wanted Hopkins to take all his belts to Wales
Bernard said fuck em'..
Bernard got to keep the belts as it was to be at 168 and didn't even have to travel. He still ducked him even after agreeing terms.

It's funny Joe didn't have the balls to fight Hopks in Vegas THEN.
He agreed terms for it to happen. So did Hopkins, Warren and Showtime.
Hopkins reneged on the deal the next day.
That's not my recollection of events - that's Jay Larkin's quote.
Not true, if were not counting the UK he's fought three times out of Wales. He fought in Germany, Denmark and The USA. He has fought alot of American's though.
He's fought in Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Denmark and the US. Most of his fights have been outside his country. That's hardly staying in his backyard.
He fought who mattered in his division. Only two names can be discussed around his division - Jones and Hopkins. Jones was never a realistic proposition for all the right reasons whereas Hopkins ducked Calzaghe in 2003 or whenever it was before losing in 2008.
Calzaghe has fought outside of Wales more than he fought inside Wales. He's fought in more countries than most American fighters in the last 20 years. Of course, if someone had offered him more money than he would earned in the UK he would have fought in the US. I can't recall one single American who has called him out until very recently.

Exactly, and even by Roys ethos, why move when your filling stadiums, earning a steady wage in the places your fighting already.
Every Abraham fight has been in Germany.
Most of Calzaghes fights have not been in his country. He's also faced way more names and Americans.
Calzaghe's got a big heart so it's nothing to do with that, this is a major simplifying of a complex area of time and reasons to suite attacking Joe. I wish he'd have fought Johnson and I bet it frustrated him for awhile, but sometimes things can't be perfect and hinesights a wonderful thing on the other possibilities. Could be said of many fighters.

He did try to fight Jones (for the money) but Jones wanted too high a price to fight an relative unknown like Calzaghe at the time, lots of fighters wanted jones like the guy a LHW (can't remember his name) his name begins with a D and it's his last name is Michealowski or something. Nunn wanted Jones, Hopkins wanted the rematch etc..
Johnson was floating round the top 10 but he'd just lost to Hopkins so he wouldn't have gotten much credit at the time. Brewer and Mitchell were ranked higher than him at the time. In Hindsight Johnson would've been a better option but Calzaghe didn't know that at the time.
lmao... I'll take this as a joke
I dont..
but im not even gunna get involved with this dumbass situation..
its a recycled topic, but its the truth..
