Wow, sounds pretty good. Would you consider him a waste of talent? He was on a good winning streak before he retired. I wonder if he retired becuase he was heading past his prime or he wasn't getting the big money fights?
i think he retired because he feinted in the gym one day
im not sure how good he was he might have been one of thse guys who does'nt look that special but is able to get more done that what u actually think he did push McCallum who was no bum to say the least and he beat Eubank and Benn shot or not
its hard for me to say as ive only seen 5 of his fight against Benn ,Eubank,McCallum those wins may have flattered him im not sure TBH
id say he was an aggresive limited Boxer who could brawl and had a very good chin and was tough as nails but he could also counter punch effectively from what i saw against Eubank in his 1st fight
he brawled in 2nd fight with Eubank
Brawled with Benn and boxed more against McCallum

That's probably about right, although I think it was only losing to Collins that revealed that Eubank in particular was maybe past his best. Eubank was definitely the favourite for their first fight. It was crazy actually. Steve Collins was in the papers saying he was going to be hypnotised not to feel pain and to never give up and the papers were all saying "is is this fair, is this safe?" and I think Eubank complained about it too.
Nuts.
Yeah, it affected Eubank's psyche going into the fight, he was complaining bitterly about the supposed hypnosis and even threatened to not fight. It was all a ploy from Collins.
I think Eubank had already shown that he was past his best before the Collins fights, he had a few close, controversial decisions go his way.
Does anyone know what Steve Collins style was like? Was he a banger or was he more of a skilled boxer?
He had OK boxing skills, nothing special, liked to brawl more than box though.

I was only a kid at the time, but I have to say it was like Steve Collins came out of nowhere (I'm sure he didn't) and just had Benn and Eubank's numbers.
Anyway he really came onto the top level scene at the end of their careers (some might say that was because he ended them!). Collins was supposed to fight Calzaghe for his title but he retired and the result was the Eubank vs Calzaghe title eliminator where Joe got the belt.
From different British fans, i have heard that Benn and Eubank were both past it at the time. They stated that Eubank was mentally damaged from the Michael Wattson fight and Benn was physically shot from all of the wars that he was involved in. I know that Collins had to be a good fighter to still be able to pull it out becuase Benn and Eubank were obviously still dangerous and good fighters. Eubank especially becuase he moved up to cruiserweight and gave the british champion Carl Thompson a run for his money in both of their fights.
I don't really know much about Steve Collins other than he has wins over Eubank and Benn. It was most likely one of those big risk little reward situation for Jones. I'm also not sure if Collins was willing to come to the U.S to fight.

not to mention Steve Collins who called him out after the Benn 2 Fight and after his 1st win over Eubank
im a Roy Jones fan but i cannot deny im gutted he never faced these fighters wether he would have dominated them or not he should have faced them u need to see them in the ring together playing fantasy fight counts for nothing
i cant criticise Floyd fans for it a do it myself now can i LOL

I believe that Benn and Eubank would have presented Jones with the most problems. Benn becuase of his massive power and Eubank becuase of his thinking and boxing ability. Although i would have made Jones a favorite over both of them, they would have been his toughest tests. I think that problem was that Eubank didn't want to come to the U.S and Jones didn't want to come to the U.K. Jones had everything to lose. I am shocked that Jones/Benn didn't occu though. Benn has came over to the U.S plenty of times in his fights with Barkely, Dewitt ect and even called Jones out after his win over MCcellann.

If this is based on skill, then i must agree with the above that Jones would have be the best talented wise. However if this is judging on accomplishments, then Robinson would have to be the man.
Sweet
Of the British guys you listed, Benn and Eubank, there is no doubt in my mind that they were amongst the best SMWs of the time, and definitely guys that Jones should really have fought. Calzaghe came a bit late for Jones at SMW IMO, but still the fight could have been made at some point.
Don't know that much about Nunn and Michaelczewski, but I do know Nunn was 36-0 and the champ by the time Toney got to him at MW(?) so he too is a guy Jones should have taken on. Michaelczewski too. The bottom line is that Jones was a real P4P talent and so beating guys like this should have been no problem. The problem is he didn't, even though they were all there for him. I'm not saying he ducked them or anything like that as I'm sure fighting Roy Jones wasn't too high on anyone's list of priorities, but no question he would have a much better record to go with his incredible talent had he beaten them all.
Michael Nunn was a very good fighter, a smooth southpaw who had the tools to be great.
He was giving Toney all he could handle and was in fact ahead before Toney caught him, I don't think Nunn fully recovered from that loss, he also had the style to give Jones problems.
Anyways, I agree with you, Jones' resume could have been better but there is no denying his natural talent and ability.

I always say the exact same thing. If Jones had fought the best fighters and biggest punchers of his era, then we could make a strong case for him being close to a guy like Robinson, Leonard ect. He fought a few good names names like Toney, Hopkins ect, but avoided fighting the elite in his divisions and the best fighters that were around the time that he was. Calzaghe, Eubank, Benn, Nunn, Dariusz Michalczewski ect. He was one of the most skilled and talented guys to watch, but his resume was mostly picked guys that he knew he could beat.

I believe that if they were all the same weight and were all in their primes
For example
Roy at 160
PBF at 130 etc
if they done a tournament then these would be the results P4P based on talent and head to head
7.Tito
6. Hopkins
5.Whitaker
4.PBF
3.SRL
2.SRR
1.RJJ
IMO Roy was the most talented boxer i have ever seen but i have never seen SRR at WW. If we are talking about Legacy then SRR is the greatest by a wide Margin only people close to his competition level are Ali, Duran and Armstrong
I would say Robinson, but I'm taking that largely on trust from those who know more about boxing than me.
Of boxers I'm genuinely familiar with, Leonard is the best I've seen.
In the battle of ther modern era greats I think Mayweather is the best, although it would be Jones if he had fought more excellent competition and perhaps not moved up to HW, in which case I think he would have beaten Tarver and Johnson in his losses.
