It is a misquote, or it got lost somewhere, but he didn't say it.
The article saying he did quotes BBC Sport, which quotes Joe's own column in the South Wales Argus.
I read the South Wales Argus in work today, and paid particular attention to Joe's column.
He did not say he wouldn't fight Pavlik, this is bullshit.
He said it is unlikely, but he also said he will never fight Kessler.
There is also no mention of this on the Sports Network website. Frank Warren, for all his faults, keeps his site up to date to the hour pretty much. If this was really said, it would be on there.
Either Roy will price himself out, and Kelly will get the call up, or Joe will fight and beat them both.
For me Roy is the harder fight anyway, at least he is for Calzaghe.
I like Pavlik he is exciting, powerfull full of heart and all that shit but at the end of the day he is a limited fighter in terms of skill, Zag would figure him out quickly and beat him down.
Roy Jones? I KNOW he aint what he was, not even nearly but he hits real sharp has super quick hands and for my money has the beating of Joe Calzaghe! Why do people always say that Pavlik is 'tailor made' for Calzaghe? I mean really...Pavlik aint anything like Lacy. If anything, the guy fights like a Richie Woodhall or Kessler, with variations of course.
and Calzaghe didnt exactly breeze through them. They were pretty competitive fights until late into the fight, when they both were wilting while Calzaghe was still fresh.
Jones has been more or less done with his career since Glen Johnson beat him up. and he hasnt exactly gotten that much better since then, just older. how you figure he could give more problems to Joe than Pavlik could is kind of beyond me.
Bernard didn't hurt anyone, it was a flash KD.
And I know the other example you will bring up. Watch it closely, Joe was wobbled before the punch landed.
Suprise suprise, it was a headbutt.
Flash knockdown? Calzaghe was hurt by a short straight right cross. He was legitimately stunned by the straight right southpaw killer cross.
Glad you could clear that up. What are you his boyfriend?
I read the original article that this has borrowed quotes from.
I said that in the first post, what are you, an idiot?
It's not beyond the realms of possibility that we will face each other, but I think Jones is the right fight for me at the moment."
A direct quote from Joe. That's pretty much turning Pavlik down. I don't know how much clearer Joe had to get on what he wants to do. It all comes down to one thing, the Jones fight is worth a lot more money. He's a bigger draw and willing to come over to Wales.
Yes he said that, but the fact that it's still a possibility means he has not turned Pavlik down.
Besides, Frank Warren's column in the Sun today starts with the headline "Now Pav Can 'Ave A Go With Our Joe"
The fight is no less likely that it was before, Arum has been talking it up as usual, and we all know Bob Arum is possibly the most full of shit person on the planet.
The Tito fight was a joke, you can't possibly use that fight to justify RJJ deserving a shot at Joe.
Who is Roy these days anyway? He has no title, nothing to bring to the table.
He's not even a name really anymore, because people WON'T forget how faded he was.
Im not using it to justify anything, Joe wants Roy as much as Roy wants him!
Roy Jones Jnr IS very much a name.

I don't buy it.
But you have to take a look from Jones point of view. He was P4P the #1 fighter in the sport. A well known fighter & multi-division champ & the challenger who's virtually an unknown wants you to come to his backyard overseas & fight him. Of course any boxer would want to be compensated for doing that. Cal was the fighter that needed to establish himself so he should have made more of an effort to fight Jones but he was content to defend his WBO belt at home.
Where's the ducking? Joe wasn't mentioning Roy much when Roy was in his prime?
Plus i found this in a thread i made back claiming Joe had said this, am trying to get a link for it now.
It works both ways.
Joe is a smart guy, he wouldn't of beat a prime RJJ. Joe wasn't on RJJ's radar back when he was supposedly "ducking" him and why would Joe leave Wales to lose his record and belt in embaressing fashion?
Now he feels he has a shot to beat Roy now that hes slowed down and taken some serious losses. He wants to beat Roy, which I believe he can. RJJ is one of the best boxers of all time, even with his KO losses I believe time will come to appreciate what he has done for the sport. You can't fault Joe for wanting a piece of that.

That quote came from a Michael McCormick interview in July 2003. Right after Jones defeated Ruiz.
Truth has proof.
He sent it to Reedickyaluss, and even Reed now admits it is true.
I PM'ed him to ask for the link, and am currently awaiting a response.

"We tried to make this fight many years ago but the stumbling block was always what Roy wanted to be paid,"

"I'm a big Roy Jones fan and to be honest, he's the only guy in the world that I really don't want to fight. He seems to be the perfect fighter and you just can't hit the guy. Look at what Jones did to Richard Hall who then fights Dariuz Michaelczweski and bashes him up for 11 rounds. I like to watch Jones fight and see his moves. He carries an aura that he takes into the ring with him. It's 100 percent confidence and he knows he's going to win. You can tell that he doesn't take his talent for granted though because he obviously trains very hard and keeps in tremendous shape."

It works both ways.
Yeah, because a prime Roy Jones - who was considered the best fighter in his world - should have flown to Wales to fight some nobody with a WBO belt. A guy who, coincidentally, left the super middleweight division as recently as his last fight!
Some of you guys kill me...

Anyone got actual proof that Roy ducked Joe when Roy was in his prime? Don't come back with that 2006 article either cause that won't wash and Frank Warren was doing the talking and he sprays nothing but shit!
Carry on!
Here's a link to that Reedickyaluss post I was on about.

For some reason none of my buttons work anymore...like the bold ones, or the smiley ones...any help guys?
If I was Joe id fight Pavlik, easier fight more recognition! But if the Pavlik bubble bursts soon and he gets owned/exposed by say Kessler or someone like that then his name aint so hot in the long run, Roy is Hall of Fame absaloute ledgend, faded to fuck but his name still reads Roy Jones on ur resume and in time people forget how faded fighters were, remeber he just owned Tito

Agreed, Pavlik is made for Joe, but he would still bring the most respect and would do more for his legacy.
I really don't think Joe should take the Roy fight, it's a high risk for no reward, and Roy ducked him for the exact same reason back when he was in his prime.

If Bernard was able to hurt Joe with the few right hands he threw during their fight, i wouldnt blame Joe for not wanting to fight Kelly Pavlik.
Bernard didn't hurt anyone, it was a flash KD.

Suprise suprise, it was a headbutt.
very true. if joe win against roy no one will give him credit anyway so fight prime pavlik and win or lose get the respect you deserve.
Exactly.
All I see on the board at the moment is how Joe has ducked Pavlik because he is scared.
Was he scared of Lacy? Scared of Kessler?
They had just as much legitimate claim to beating him as Pavlik does now, and were both noted punchers also.
The scared arguement doesn't wash, not at all.
Joe still hasn't ruled out a Pavlik fight though, the article is wrong.
