Really dissapointing. I can understand Calzaghe preferring the bigger name in Jones Jr, but the better fight for purists is him against Pavlik. Joe seems to suggest Arum might have been talking shit as usual if you read between the lines as well.
Kris,
As I mentioned in the other thread, the article proves that Jones was in NO WAY pricing himself out of a Calzaghe fight. Someone on this baord spread that garbage.
This fight makes much more sense for Calzaghe. As for Pavlik/ Read my previous post with regards to that.
How does it prove that? It's reasonable to say given Roy and Calzaghe's open keenness on fighting eachother and getting a deal done quickly, that Roy and King did try to bargain too big a majority pay out of the pie (we already knew they wanted a majority) for Calzaghe or Frank to accept, hence the delay and the sudden lack of transparency about a match-up.
Calzaghe's still most likely going to settle for less than he deserves because he wants the fight, and Roy won't stop saying "I'm the bigger name". This despite Calzaghe being no. 1, proven, bigger at the moment, favourite, a bigger draw in his homelands, decent in the US, and Roy accepting some of these aspects saying the onus is on him to chase, fight in the top guys backyward, with a deal that wouldn't favor him as much as he's used to.
I also think it's reasonable to factor into the politics of it all, Pavlik and Arum openly expressing interest in fighting Calzaghe, which wouldn't favour Roy's bargaining position for various reasons.
It does begger the question, why has Frank discussed a fight with Pavliks promoter Arum in depth saying it's definitely possible, without assessing better if Calzaghe would really want it? Almost been a waste and embarassed Frank Warren Joe suddenly coming out saying no no, don't want Kelly, most likely Roy. I doubt he's changed his mind much but it's possible. With Pavlik and his promoter chasing Calzaghe a little, it's probably helped Calzaghe's barganing with Roy so a deal there is more likely now.
That's a pretty legit article, very surprising. First time Calzaghes spoken out on Pavlik in awhile now, and he does it saying he's not sure Pavlik wants him, when he just said he does. Very odd. He seems focussed on Roy Jones, and he does have a point about that being a closer match than Pavlik. Pavliks style is suited for Calzaghe, whilst Roy could challenge him well on most or all fronts.
Calzaghe needs to make his mind up how many more times he's fighting. He doesn't rule out twice there saying fighting Pavlik isn't outside the realms of possibility, but Roy is right at the moment. Well hardly considering all the fighters age and experience he'd be favoured against Pavlik now, and Roy in a 2nd fight earning bigger money with a bigger name. If he does it the other way around financial and winning changes are reduced.

Of course boxing purists will know that pavlik would be more of a threat to joe calzaghe than roy jones, but jones is the bigger names and calzaghe is now looking for the pay days which he does deserve after all his hard work. Dont under-estimate Roy jones however, he looked really sharp in his last couple fights and personally....i can see him outpointing Calzaghe in a very close fight..

If the money is right and feels good enough after the Jones fight, both fights can happen. In your mind you have many voices and the one that speaks for money, speaks loudest.
True. Hopefully, it will happen.

Basically, Calzaghe is doing Pavlik a favor. He's also (subtly) telling him that he needs to step his box-office game up.
I like Kelly a bunch - he made me a fan early and about the only thing that surprised me about the first Taylor fight was the fact that he got dropped. So I was very surprised at his performance in the rematch. Kelly Pavlik's got some flaws I don't hear anyone talking about. Glaring ones.
We know he's a murderous puncher. And he's got skills with it. But I think sometimes we get wrapped up in the euphoria of the KO. Pavlik has shown a fair amount of vulnerability in his last two fights (not counting the Lockett mismatch). And a guy like Joe Calzaghe will be looking at that.
I don't think Jermain Taylor hits as hard as Joe Calzaghe.
I don't think Jermain Taylor can box as well as Calzaghe.
I don't think Jermain Taylor is as strong as Calzaghe.
I don't think Jermain Taylor is as experienced as Calzaghe.
And finally...I don't think Jermain Taylor has anywhere near the ring intelligence Calzaghe has.
But there was Jermain Taylor in the first fight, a punch away from making Pavlik a pretender but couldn't muster up the intelligence or energy (in the f*cking SECOND ROUND) to put him away.
And, in spite of what revisionist history tells me, I know what I saw in the rematch. A damn close fight won in the championship rounds.
Kelly Pavlik beat Jermain Taylor because he could take and could dish out more. Joe Calzaghe brings a lot more to the table and if Pavlik thinks he's gonna push him around, he's in for a big surprise. And if he can't push him back, what's he gonna do? Outbox Calzaghe? When you see him try to do that, you know he's lost. As skilled as Pavlik is, Calzaghe is just as skilled; cognizant of all the little nuances in the ring that separate a Floyd Mayweather from a Zab Judah. And he's a big, strong guy who's been giving and taking against bigger guys than Pavlik. And he himself is pretty big for his division.
"The Ghost" isn't ready for that. And he would get stopped trying. Against Taylor the second time, he kept coming forward until Taylor wilted. But he got tagged a lot. I'll have to watch the fight again but I didn't see too much adjustments aside from him trying to straighten out his right. He better be ready for a chess match in there against Joe. Because that's what it'll be when he realizes this isn't Edison Miranda or Fulgencio Zuniga.
imsure im one of 6 people thats happy to read this... not that i wouldnt love a calzaghe pavlik fight... and i hope it still comes about! but i wanna roy joe fight!
I don't mind a Calzaghe-Jones fight but I would have preferred a Calzaghe-Pavlik fight.
