Calzaghe-Pavlik 'set for' October
Kelly Pavlik's promoter Bob Arum has said he is confident of securing a bout with Joe Calzaghe in October and says such a match up would take place in Las Vegas.
Pavlik destroyed Calzaghe's stablemate Gary Lockett in three rounds in Atlantic City last Saturday in his first defence of the WBC/WBO middleweight title.
Initially Roy Jones Jnr was mooted as Calzaghe's next opponent in the autumn in Wales.
However, it appears that Calzaghe could be returning to Las Vegas, where he defeated Bernard Hopkins in a split decision in April.
"My first priority is Joe Calzaghe," Arum told the Max Boxing website. "That's a huge fight and if that fight takes place - it would take place in Las Vegas.
"So that's my first priority. That's priority number one. I really believe they are nice people the Calzaghe people. Frank Warren, his promoter is a dear friend of mine.
"They want to make the fight. I think the economics will come together and I think that fight will be made. That fight will be in October, not September.
"If the Calzaghe fight can't be made, then Kelly will fight in September and we will look to fight in Ohio, probably Cleveland."
The bout would see Pavlik step up to challenge for Calzaghe's WBC/WBA/WBO super middleweight belts which he has retained despite taking Bernard Hopkins' Ring Magazine light heavyweight crown.
cant fuckin believe this its a classic exmaple of casual fans who dont know shit about boxing but follow the hype and swallow it like no tommorow. pavlik is strong but his punches dont have the one punch KO that pantera or kessler have, puavlik relies on stamin and his strength he wears down his opponent with punches and then finshes them off.
do you really believe that calzaghe is going to be intimdated by a lanky streak of p!55 like pavlik?!?! g.foreman said in the build up to the hopkins fight that joe has such a calm demeanor and is so confident without being cocky. build-ups to big fights dont affect him like they affect other fighters.
do you really think that calzaghe has never faced a monster puncher before - look at lacey or kessler any normal fighter watching their highlight reels would shit themselves but not joe he went out there and took care of buisness.
the one thing i will say for pavlik is that becausehis punches are cumulative, he might wear joe down by going to the body which is something that no-one has really done with calzaghe - then again bear in mind that pavlik is taller than joe and may have trouble landing to calzaghes body. even if he does calzaghe has an iron will to win and a real warrior attitude even if pavlik lands i dont see calzaghe going down.
pavlik brings nothing to the table that joe has not seen before - he is a copy of kessler (tough, durable, strong, young, power, strength etc) although with better reach and less power. i can see calzaghe's adaptability once again winning him the fight, the guy is just too smart.
pavlik will only win in 2 scenario's:
1) cumulative power punchers (ala hatton and pavlik) do go to the ody more often than one punch KO artists like kessler and lacey so maybe just maybe pavlik will tag joe properly and drop him - i doubt it but it could happen
2) joe gets complacent as pavlik isn't really a challenge for him imo, hes too much like kessler, if i was calzaghe i would get myself up for this by constantly reminding myself that i needed to win in order to finally gain some respect recognition and long over-due credit.
calzaghe enjoys a challenge and thats why he was looking for RJJ, who has the tools to beat joe, thats why i was looking forward to watching calzaghe vs RJJ - it would have been the sweet science at its very best. it would have been interesting to see how calzaghe adpated against a faster opponent - which is something that hes never come across before.
hopkins knocked joe down and u think kelly can't...do u really watch boxing ?
Joe will get stretched if he ever fights kelly

COME ON JOOOEEEEE!!!
Best boxer ever.
Thats just nonsense:banana:
Don't go getting too excited. He will be fighting Jones in the fall.
whered that come from?
i havent read any articles that says this match is set, or even close... ONLY IN discussions...
this is not gonna end well for joe......
bad choice of opponent on his part. he would've been better served fighting roy or antonio. good for us though.
Fighting anyone not over 40 is dangerous for Joe. That tells allot about that overrated bastard. Look forward for a brutal KO.
Ha ha ha ha ha! I literally laughed out loud. That flag is going to be flying high come October I suspect.
BTW, did you know, and this is no BS that October 18 is my birthday? I literally cannot believe the hand of fate.
We all know about your corruption in boxing mr abadger, making Lacy take a beating off Joe, paying Hops to get on his knee's, fixing a fight with Pavlik is just the latest stunt. We expected better of you. :nonono:
You'll be having a fine bday this year!! :headbang:
Nope,it will be the Lacy fight all over again:boxing:
I hope this happens.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see Pavlik get outclassed and beaten upon at will, but if anything will finally shut the mouths of 90% of American posters on here, it would be this.
I don't see it being that much of a blowout, but the scorecards will certainly read similair.
Great fight. I can't wait. I'll definitely be pulling for Pavlik. But no matter who loses, neither have anything to be ashamed of. Props to them both for making this fight happen.
Predictions for some of the various comments seen and to be seen from ppl on all sides with all kinds of motives. Either hyping they're guys opponent to make the win bigger, or dismissing they're guys opponent due to bias;
Pavliks an unstoppable monster.
Pavliks too young to beat Calzaghe.
Calzaghe beating a past prime old RJJ isn't impressive.
Pavlik beating a past prime old Calzaghe isn't impressive.
Joe managing to starve and make SMW again is impressive.
Calzaghe beating an in experienced MW isn't impressive.
Joe's not faced a boxer like Pavlik.
Joe's faced boxers like Pavlik.
Pavliks not faced boxers like Joe.
Pavliks faced boxers like Joe.
If Kessler can't seriously hurt Joe, Pavlik can't.
If Kessler can seriously hurt Joe, Pavlik will KO him.
Reaction to each will include;
:ugh:
and last but not least..

Sorry guys, I'm a huge fan of Kelly Pavlik but I don't see how he beats Joe Calzaghe. Methinks guys are getting a bit to excited over his sparring session last Saturday. I recall Jermain Taylor nearly pulling off a surprise the last time they met. And let's not forget that he was dropped and badly hurt in their first fight.
Pavlik is better off going for Kessler but I guess Arum wants Calzaghe now. Good luck...
