Check at 1:30, he states that Calzaghe was also down early in the Eubank fight, but then went on to dominate it.
Yes he dominated it, but it was Eubank that was down, not Calzaghe.
Calzaghe has only ever been down against Mitchell, Salem and Hopkins. Amateur or Pro.
Where fight production is concerned, HBO also has an unresolved problem relating to its lead-analyst slot. The members of HBO’s announcing team serve as its representatives to the boxing community. They are also essential to branding in the collective mind of subscribers. Two years ago, Greenburg put in motion a series of events designed to replace Larry Merchant with Max Kellerman. HBO is now in a situation where lead-analyst duties are divided between them. The assumption is that, in the not-too-distant future, Merchant will be gone.
Greenburg is delighted with the way things are working out. “Max’s performance has been very strong,” Ross says. “I’m getting a lot of good reaction from a lot of people about him. He has a vast historical understanding of the fight game and gives us deep penetrating analysis.”
Most people in boxing disagree with that assessment. Kellerman has many talents. Analyzing a fight as it unfolds in front of him isn’t one of them. Even if one accepts the view that HBO had to begin laying the groundwork for someone to succeed Larry Merchant, Max isn’t the guy.
Kellerman is a provocateur, not an analyst. The “vast historical understanding of the fight game” that Greenburg trumpets hasn’t been particularly helpful. The last time it surfaced was during a March 22, 2008, Boxing After Dark telecast, when Max likened Michael Katsidis to Rocky Marciano (although Max conceded that Katsidis had yet to prove himself on Marciano’s level as a fighter). That word of caution became obvious when Joel Casamayor knocked Katsidis out in the tenth round.

If they follow the same formula as the HBO WCB commentators, Kellerman would be the Larry Merchant journalist type, while Papa is the Jim Lampley blow by blow man and Lewis is the expert analyst.
I don't think Kellerman is entertaining at all. He doesn't have the same grasp on what is going on in front of him as does Merchant and he gets caught up with which fighters he likes.
As for the person who said he wouldn't be there if he didn't know what he's talking about, then you just opened the door to greatness for guys like Bob Sheridan and others who don't know what they're talking about.
Kellerman is there because he is young and the thinking is that bringing in younger commentators attracts a younger audience.
Kellerman's biggest weakness IMO is post fight interviews, which is surprising for someone who hosts a daily radio show in New York.
In terms of WHAT aspects of boxing? I dont even know exactly what his job is on air. If he is an ANALYST of the action then I would say, being fair, that is knowledge in that area is very average. His historical knowledge and his views on THE GAME are good and attention getting, though

Ill bet you max kellerman can match up with ANYONE on this site in boxing knowlage, There is a reason why he has this HBO job ya know lol

I can't stand watching Kellerman. Sure he's knowledgable but why does he have to try and display his vast knowledge in every single round? His encyclopaedic boxing brain gets in the way of his commentary.
KEllerman is smart, He knows boxxing amazingly well, Most the stats that the other people quote are fed to them by people on a computer, Max is one of the few who actualy calls apon his boxing knowlage to comentate
Maybe Max should buy a computer...
But seriously though, that video also claimed that the cut suffered in the Sakio Bika fight was the worst of Joe's career. Technically they were right, but only because it was the ONLY cut of Joe's career (before Hopkins).
It's like they either don't pay attention or just flat out don't care.

Max is far from flawless and he's said some things that really annoyed me over the years. But overall I think he makes good contributions to the telecast. His real strength was working in a studio like he did at ESPN though.

I suppose you know more?
Did I state that????
But I did correct him.
I don't see him correcting me, I won't talk about shit unless I know it's true.
You don't just GUESS on live TV, in a fight that was talked about for years.
Now to the normal public, this could put a different view on Calzaghe, Like he is used to being down at the start of a fight.
When in fact he had never been down in the first round of any fight in his career, it was a first.

I just think HBO do a bad job when commentating. A lot of talk before the fight. You as a fan is all hype up. Then when the fights start, they do not paying attention. Round 3-4 the talk about the next fight in any sport. Between rounds the just keep on talking. In the Kessler - Calzaghe fight "Calzaghe forced Kessler's corner in to danish". But they didn't. HBO
just has Enzo Calzaghes voice on when showing Kessler's corner. Jesus a boxing fan recognize the voice of Enzo. You just get the impression
that they already are focusing on the next fight. They simply not good at a live commentating. They are to slow, and likes to here them self instead of commentating the fight live!!!
That was stupid, but Kellerman's stupidest moment is surely this?
what a ***. i can't stand him, he's an arrogant prick and really pissed me off when he showed a severe lack of respect interviewing gatti after his fight with gomez

I do not rate him but mistakes can always be made. I get more concerned on how he miscalls rounds etc. He may have a knowledge of boxing--it doesn't always translate to good judgement/lack of bias
