Man, it breaks my heart to see Tommy Hearns like that. I saw him on ESPN classic ringside a few nights ago and he couldn't even comment on his own fights because it takes him forever to finish a sentence, Brian Kenny and Bert Sugar had to finish his thoughts. Why was he boxing as recent as two years ago? Why didn't someone stop that from happening?
I find these threads very disrespectful as a feloow fighter my self
I haven't read the entire thread, but of what I have read I don't see anything very disrespectful. I guess what I'm trying to say is... Don't like it, don't read it.
is not disrespectful unless pple are talking shit, I'm a fighter, but as a fighter we know the risk we take when we step into the ring, including death
Floyd SR.
Floyd SR- " I'm zee bezt trainaa in the world, betta than da rezt theerrrzz no contest"
Arturo Gatti speaks off it now, he WILL be punch drunk
James Toney sounds punch drunk :(
I was just about to post Toney...Dude talks with a slur and he kinda stutters a little bit...He really needs to call it a career before he is scarred for life. He has nothing else to prove!
There is no proof or theory that I've ever heard that links Parkinson's to taking a beating.
I didn't say there was:
There is no conclusive proof either way that it was/was not due to boxing.
Anyway, I just used him as an example of how Ricky will act after he hangs em up.
But don't you think that the fact that he got hit in the facxe a lot and now has a condition that CAN be linked with head trauma is a bit of a coincidence?
BTW guys, I didn't know a lot of this stuff about Parkinsons, thanks for the info.
So Michael J. Fox boxed? Dude Sometimes people just get Parkinson's, the cause if unknown.
Right there. But one might suspect just a slight connection dont you think?
Parkinson's is caused by death of brain cells in the Substantia Nigra. Coincidently, getting hit in the head results in the death of... wait for it... BRAIN CELLS!
Also, Parkinson's disease and Parkinson's Syndrome are two different diseases. Parkinson's Syndrome refers specifically to onset caused by artificial means such as trauma, poisoning, etc...
Ali has Parkinson's Syndrome.

Head trauma
Past episodes of head trauma are reported more frequently by sufferers than by others in the population. A methodologically strong recent study found that those who have experienced a head injury are four times more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than those who have never suffered a head injury. The risk of developing Parkinson’s increases eightfold for patients who have had head trauma requiring hospitalization, and it increases 11-fold for patients who have experienced severe head injury. The authors comment that since head trauma is a rare event, the contribution to PD incidence is slight. They express further concern that their results may be biased by recall, i.e., the PD patients because they reflect upon the causes of their illness, may remember head trauma better than the non-ill control subjects. These limitations were overcome recently by Tanner and colleagues, who found a similar risk of 3.8, with increasing risk associated with more severe injury and hospitalization.

Ali has Parkinson's Syndrome.
Why don't you show yours? I dont have a phd. in medicin, but I do know the following:
1: Ali himself says that his condition is caused by punches to the head. He should know with all the doctors he's been seeing.
2: Ali does not have Parkinsons disease but Parkinsons syndrome. I don't know the difference but I do know that there IS a difference.
To be honest it's the first I've ever heard of that. In terms of him having syndrome, as I've just always heard people refer to or read Ali as having Parkinson's and I never gave it much thought... although that does make a lot more sense as there are other thing that give "like" symptoms.
I'd ask that you now try to prove that theory using the scientific method, oh, and show me your PhD.
Parkinson's is caused by your brain producing less dopamine and is generally believed to be either genetically inherited or through inhalation or contact w/ certain types of chemicals. While it is unknown of the exact cause, the safe bet is millions of people who suffer from it didn't get hit in the head a lot.
