Well I am not sure what rules of responsibility they had back in the 20's or 30's, but it is great to see you had to dig back 70 years to find similar results. I am sure there were either Injuries, Politics, or even the Great Depression involved.
That's not the point, I could have listed some recent stuff. If you read betweent the lines, I listed some of the most beloved heros of past generation. Both guys have movies about them. Both fought in a great era that knowledgable boxing fans think of "as the good old days of boxing where fighters just fought".
In contrast, in todays era we have multiple belts and multiple ways for fighters to get to the top. If you're a welterweight contender, Floyd Mayweather isn't your only way to get to the top. Maybe Floyd is taking a break like Dempsey and Braddock did BUT he certainly isn't holding up the division because the one positive thing about sandctioning bodies in todays era is, they give more contenders, more oppritunities then they had in the old days...when there was only one champion.
Let me give you a few example of fighters doing the same or worse in the good old days of boxing:
Jack Demsey - The World Heavyweight Champion didn't defend his title for 2 years. Back then there was only one champion and there were no mandatories. In his first fight back, he lost the title.
The Cinderella Man Jim Braddock - Didn't defend his World Heavyweight title for 2 years. In his first defense, he lost to Joe Louis. This guy is supposed to be a hero yet he held up the division for two years.
Floyd Mayweather - Hold a unofficial P4P title which is based on opinion. Is the WBC welterweight champion and just defended against another P4P best in Hatton. The contenders of 147 have WBO, WBA and IBF titles they can go after now.
So how is he any worse then those great champions before him.......in the good old days of boxing.

Is that it or are there more?
I am not even saying he is ducking Cotto. My message is what he is doing is totally unfair to the fighters who deserve a crack at him. They worked their asses off to get the "reward" of being placed on hold with the status of maybe.
The WBC belt was placed on hold. The Ring Belt was placed on hold. The #1 P4P status was placed on hold. He is simply holding back the sport. If more fighters had his mindset the sport would completely die.
No fighter deserves extra perks or the right to go by different rules. They have a responsibility to maintain the status they they earned. If they refuse, get off the pot.
Now after July 26th, he knows his name will not be in a conversation regarding any unification fight as he no longer holds the WBC title. He is not interested at all in fighting Margarito or Cotto. Now he will not get pressured. There is far more to this than meets the eye. I don't think this has anything to do with the WBC pressuring him or they would have done it a long time ago.
The timing always seems so perfect.

Well considering I am not giving him any credit for the achievement of winning the rematch with Oscar, but am just giving him the benefit of the doubt for an extension of how long he gets before he officially is "ducking" Cotto.

this post shows just how little you know about boxing. I dont mean that as an insult. you are either blind or ignorant. Im willing to give you the benefit of the doubt since you just started following the sport.
Well tell me what is so spectacular about his resume, please.
Joshua Clottey has not won a world title, but is well on his way. I am a big believer in Clottey.
Cintron is a decent champion, but never really beat anyone worthwhile. He won a vacant title, and hasn't had a single good moment against Margarito (which is a credit to Margarito, not a knock on Cintron), but still, Cintron is very unproven on the top level.
Margarito has a ton of other "good" names on his resume, but no one really great that would eclipse something like Zab Judah, or even Carlos Baldomir IMO. Martinez, Diaz, Johnson... hell, even Lujan isn't a horrible name on the resume.
Is Margarito so hyped up because of his "potential" if he ever gets a big fight or what? You all can't be this excited about his resume can you? If it is potential, then I can understand, but if not... I just don't know.
What if it doesn't?
The only way it doesn't is if Cotto losses. I fully expect Cotto to outbox Margarito as I think that he is nothing but a Bob Arum Hypemachine.
If he can't get past margarito then a fight against Mayweather was never meant to be.
Another thing is, I am 100% confident that he will fight Cotto in the future. Which is why accept what he is doing right now. All Cotto has to do is take care of his business while Floyd takes care of his. If they're both victorious in their upcoming fights, Cotto-Mayweather will happen in 2009.
What if it doesn't?
It has nothing to do with the motivation of a fighter with his status. It has everything to do with the responsibility of a fighter of his status.
With his stature he has a responsibility to the fans and the sport. Anything else is not to par. Anything else weakens the sport. Anything else is not how a champion should be.
Well considering I am not giving him any credit for the achievement of winning the rematch with Oscar, but am just giving him the benefit of the doubt for an extension of how long he gets before he officially is "ducking" Cotto.
Yes, those intelligent enough to understand the motivations of a fighter are the worst kind.
The slack-jawed retards who proclaim Margarito as king of boxing when he doesn't have a single worthwhile name on his resume are the best kind!!!
And just to be a dick, :cop:.

typical..
hey, looked at the WW rankings lately? LOL
now tell me who DOESNT have a worth while "NAME" :ugh: ON HIS RESUME...
BTW JULY 26TH HOMAY.
That will be the day if Margarito wins that his fans can start saying the things they are already saying, but then it will be legitimate. I'll shut the fuck up about Margarito's resume if he wins on the 26th.
But really, is Margarito worth all the attention that he gets because he beat Cintron twice and Clottey, with Clottey having quite a few moments in the first few rounds?
Thats great. But he IS profiting from the moniker, "Best Boxer Alive" and "Ring Champion" and "P4P #1" is he not? These labels carry a certain standard which those who were named in the past met and my issue with Floyd is that he isn't doing that. In what other sport can those be considered the best, those who profit from that label, not behave in the manner of which the best do? What other sport? I understand that "thats just the way it is", but that doesn't mean we have to accept it now does it? Isn't this what created the declined in boxing? We can't be rubbing it in other fan's faces claiming how Floyd is the best and Floyd will beat anyone when he doesn't do that or prove it. If he has nothing else to prove, why not move out the way, relinquish these labels and let other fighters who are hungrier fight for them? Thats the way I see it at least.
You don't have to accept it. That's part of the debate.
I understand it because if I put myself in his shoes I would do the same, as would alot of other people.

Here is my point of view:
It's nothing to me. However this is a boxing message board where we discuss a variety of topic related to boxing. So if you try to simplify it down to "Mayweather is scared/Ducking Cotto" I will tell you otherwise.
As I told you yesterday, you have a job that you get paid for doing and boxing is just a hobby to you. Something that entertains your.
For the fighter, boxing is HIS JOB. They have no pensions or nothing. So when you're hot and you're in a position to make alot of money, you take it.
In this case Floyd is fightin a guy he already defeated for another major paday.
What's it to me? Again nothing.....I just like to kill time with a debate.

The reason money is important for the subject of Floyd is only one reason in my mind.
I would be 100% against an Oscar rematch (there are better options), but seriously, Oscar is old, ready to retire, and is the only chance Floyd will ever get to make the kind of money he will make from the Oscar rematch.
The "crazy" amounts of money from the Hatton rematch can be made elsewhere, so I have no sympathy for the shit Mayweather will get for fighting Hatton, but I can at least go to bat a little bit for Mayweather, considering his policy of money first, glory second.
