At this stage Jones hasn't proved anything to me that he can compete at a high level, Hopkins on the another hand although he is on the decline as shown against Calzaghe still put up a great fight for his age and people could argue he won.
Hopkins i feel would win the rematch by UD.
True, people are getting this impression that he is some how rejuvenated becuase he took time off and is coming back against lesser opponents. He would lose to Calzaghe and bad at that. We judge fighters on how they look against the best of opposition. Hopkins has been beating pound for pound quality fighters while Jones have been beating Hanshaw(who just got knocked out badly by Andre Dirrel on Sho-box) and Trinidad, who was out 2 years and over a half a decade past his prime.
Agree 100%, utterly and completely. When/ if they fight Calzaghe makes Jones look awful. I'm certain. You can't just ignore the points you raise. Jones lost BAD (including tarver I) to the last four good opponents he faced. He improved a little since the Tarver I fight when he had no bounce at all because of the heavyweight pounds, but his reflexes are gone. He's an easy target now. As you say, Calzaghe is still doing the business at the top level. Its just the truth.
As for Hopkins, I don't know if there is really a massive difference between the Hopkins we saw against Joe and the one we've had for a few years. For most of his later career and his biggest wins Hopkins has usually had the benefit of being able to dicate the pace over a smaller opponent, e.g Trinidad, De La Hoya or chosen opponents who box low energy tactical fights like he does, e.g Tarver and Winky. I think he could still do this to these type of opponents. He loses against energy, as he did against both Taylor and Calzaghe. I think it speaks volumes that he came into the Calzaghe fight so big. He knew he couldn't handle Joe's pace, but that to slow him down he'd need to be much bigger and stronger, which he was.
Damn right. I mean Roy boxed at heavyweight once, Trinidad was a welter! My opinion on that fight was that Trinidad was basically selected as a patsy for Roy, the biggest name that he would definitely beat.
I think the world of boxing has been in denial about the demise of Jones since the very first Tarver fight. I loved Jones back in the day, but now...not so much.

Right, plus Hopkins has been fighting the better line of fighters. He fought Tarver, Wright and Calzaghe. While Jones is fighting Hanshaw and Trinidad, both out their weight class and unranked in that division. It could be misleading.

...but I'd have to say Hopkins. I don't think he's as over the hill as people say he is, whereas Jones I consider to be completely shot.

Hopkins wins the rematch. Jones wouldn't look so fast and confident in there with Bernard compared to the weak guys he's been fighting. He would know very quickly that he is in with a fighter several classes above what he has been fighting since being KOED the 2 times, and he would go into his shell. Roy won the first fight because when he was prime he was a freak of nature. He has slowed down, his confidence isnt near what it was, and people know his chin can be checked now. Hopkins might even stop him.
for me i think jones jr takes this one, he still has the speed and power , i think jones would do calzaghe too, calzaghe aint got no match for jones jr power , lets hope joe takes that fight before he retires to see how he would fair off against one of the best
I believe jones had some sort of shoulder injury in that fight.
jones would probs beat hopkins by outworking him and being more active he wins on points imo.
good thread
He had a tormnn left bicept if i am not mistaken. If not for that i think he would have stopped Trinidad.
Saying that tho... i thought Jones would have stopped Trinidad. and for some reason he chose not to step it up and take Trinidad out late... cuz he could have he was landing shots at will late on (from what i remember)

I went with Jones also because I thought Hopkins looked 43 towards the end of the Calzaghe fight.
Saying that, it was actually a tough one to pick for me.
Thats what i thought. Jones chin has been shakey of late and Hopkins is a pretty strong puncher. It would be interesting...boring but interesting.

Hopkins would stop Jones. He definitely has a lot more left and is too strong for Roy now. I honestly can't see Jones beating any top fighter right now. Wins over a blown up Hanshaw(that was never good in the first place) and Trinidad(who was out of his weight class, prime and ring rusty) does not convince me of anyting. People are completely forgetting that neither of these guys were not only lesser at the moment, but were both also past their weight class and not ranked in the top 50 in that division. Hanshaw is a super middleweight and Trinidad has not fought in 2 years and had been out boxed badly in his last fight. Bernard would systematically wear him down and stop him late.

RJJ got more left than hopkins. i think its a late round stoppage!
I clicked on "KO" only as no option for TKO
i think Jones has more in the legs and would break the old fella down and the ref steps in late.
Yh i forgot but KO/TKO sam thing :lol1:

I think Jones, his handspeed is still there and he's a very smart fighter so he won't fall into Hopkins' traps. Boring fight though, both of them would be posing more than punching.
Just like last time lol
I think Jones decision cause he would throw more basically.
