The Heavyweight divison is dominated by Eastern Europeans, and Americans are not a factor anymore in the division.
But who is the best American Heavyweight?
vote in the polls and discuss..
One minute people are saying Boxing is big in the USA, and it's the center of boxing itself. The next you saying it's not that big, and you disinterested. Jeez man, you can't have it both ways, as good as a excuse attempt that is.
USA was well into the heavy weight division when you had fighters at the top level in there. Even if you don't have interest in it now then it shows your ignorance and unwillingness to watch and appreciate other countries fighters at the top level. Also shows poor form, not wanting to compete, a defeatist attitude, and lack of support for those whom could challenge at the top if you got behind them. If you are interested, where are you top boys in the division?
Truth is it's somewhere in between and varies, but don't make such lame excuses man. Your being out don in the Heavy weight division, the top guy is from a country where boxing was not big at all, had minimal facilities, and isn't today a renown boxing hot spot. Save your excuses, have some realism, respect and admit your losing.
Terrific post. Second that.
you eastern europeans focus on boxing more than anythign else do you not?
boxing in america is a niche sport. its all about nba/nfl/mlb. if boxing was as popular over here as it is in cuba or those european countries then we'd be dominating
dont confuse disinterest with going soft

Boxing isn't the main focus in Eastern Europe, there are tons more athletes going into soccer, basketball, track + field sports, strong man, MMA, etc....
There are more gyms in America....Eastern Europeans are stronger, hungrier and tougher than Americans...We have it tough with poverty and hardship, we were just allowed to turn pro years after the cold war.
You're a complete joke, man. The thought of anyone showing pride in this Eastern European dominated devision thats only comparable to the heavy weight devision of the early 80's minus Holmes, is absolutely hilarious.
Why is tye fields not on that list?
he is the only heavyweight from america that is worth mentioning he is a beast!
after reading that list I remembered why the heavyweight division is only a shadow of it's former self.I was about to ask the same question. Where the fuck is The Great Tye Fields in the list? I'm sure Tye Fields can KTFO all those bums in the list. What a list of tomato cans.

All I wrote were The Ring's FOTYs from 1990-1999.
1996 alone had Barrera-McKinney and Gatti-Rodriguez, which both were better than Holyfield vs. Tyson. I think all the things that you factor into FOTY status should factor into Event of the Year, but shouldn't really determine FOTY.
After all, if prestige were involved in FOTY, Pavlik-Taylor I would have gotten the nod over Vazquez-Marquez II, which would have been a travesty IMO
good point D, but also aside from prestige we have to factor in the remebrance and significance of the event. barrera-mckinney and gatti-rodriguez may have indeed been better, but majority of fans would remember tyson-holyfield 1 as having a bigger impact overall. not to say that those other fights are forgotten, they not and they are legendary in their own right, but i could tell you that most people would remember that the first tyson holyfield fight was a stand out among others
it's the same thing with tyson-douglas fight and taylor chavez1 which both were in 1990. this douglas fight might not have been mike's best performance, or better in comparisson to the taylor fight, but i could bet my money that people would go with the tyson fight after all. and you know what? they'll be right about it. it was an unintentional historic classic.
but then again it has to do a lot with taste
bowe holyfiled 1 was better than the first tyson fight. but again i think the upset was a factor in it becoming a fight of the year. it was buster douglas all over again. personally i liked watching it, i wouldnt call it THE best fight ever, but i thought it was an okay pick for 1996. the other fights that you put on the list are all solid. i could name a couple of other fights that would rank much higher than the ones you posted, even other fights in 1996 alone that would be better
but that was the heavyweight championship super fight, between 2 names that were suppoused to have gotten into the ring with each other 6 years back. and i thought it lived up to the hype, mike was looking for one punch but i thought it was a good pace for heavyweights
but then again, i love the heavyweight division more than any other division. NOT RIGHT NOW, but overall i rank that division the highest. watching big guys in action is something.

I personally have a hard time feeling good or even enjoying a fight in which I know a boxer's career was ruined in terms of their health. I've watched Chavez Taylor fully once, maybe twice tops. Same w/ Benn-McClellan, Quiroga-Afinowashe, and others of the like.
Well... I think I would have less trouble with Quiroga-Afinowoshe or Chavez-Taylor than I would Benn-McClellan. Afinowoshe and Taylor could have led normal lives after their fights... that was it for Gerald.
I'm probably going to get ridiculed for this... but maybe I wasn't in a good mood when I watched that one, because that isn't one of my favorite FOTYs either... I still love it (and it stomps Holyfield vs. Tyson I), but compared to Chavez vs. Taylor, Castro vs. Jackson or Robinson vs. Gatti, it just didn't compare to me.

Bowe vs. Holyfield I is really the only heavyweight fight I have seen that can get me excited (I haven't seen the great fights of the 70s, I am trying to catch up on things since 1990 first).
Holyfield vs. Tyson I was Evander Holyfield picking apart a lethargic Tyson who refused to throw more than one shot at a time. It was one-sided, not particularly competitive, and it really wasn't a war, nor a great show of skill by either side that would make it a great FOTY.
Really... if you had to pick between watch any FOTY of the 1990-1999 range vs. Holyfield vs. Tyson I, would you EVER pick Holyfield vs. Tyson I?
Chavez vs. Taylor I
Quiroga vs. Afinowashe
Bowe vs. Holyfield I
Carbajal vs. Gonzalez I
Castro vs. Jackson I
Sorjaturong vs. Gonzalez
Gatti vs. Ruelas
Robinson vs. Gatti I
Ayala vs. Tapia I
Seriously? Every single fight on that list is better than Holyfield vs. Tyson I, easily. bowe holyfiled 1 was better than the first tyson fight. but again i think the upset was a factor in it becoming a fight of the year. it was buster douglas all over again. personally i liked watching it, i wouldnt call it THE best fight ever, but i thought it was an okay pick for 1996. the other fights that you put on the list are all solid. i could name a couple of other fights that would rank much higher than the ones you posted, even other fights in 1996 alone that would be better

Now i know you're a true boxing fan, That fight was one of the amazing fight i have ever seen in my life..Sadly both fighters would never be the same again, They both left too much in the ring on fight night and they're both dead.

the world spins in a circle thats 360 degrees which is called a cipher! so here's the science youngin...the HW division aint shit because the tiltles belong to a host of unfamiliar characters with long names! because the world ciphers around the sun, that means history always repeats itself!! in the near future there will be a regime change in the HW division. same thing that makes you laugh can make you cry!
what???? i know i read that right, but what??? :nonono::nonono:
you dont get to see heavyweight fights at that sustained action anymore. plus it was a huge upset.
but again none of those fighters are mayweather, or forrest to you (no sarcasm intended)

I voted for Calvin Brock, because he has a cool name. He's also blind.
Really, everyone on that list blows. So does the heavyweight division. Holyfield vs. Tyson I is the sorriest excuse for a FOTY that I have ever seen. what???? i know i read that right, but what??? :nonono::nonono:

Only on one eye. But Klitschko did ruin him ... Just like he and Sergei Liakhovich ruined Lamon Brewster. I would rather list a 50% blind semi-retired Calvin Brock than I'd list Tye Fields.
