From Steve Kim "I was told by a rather annoyed Arum that HBO has decided for this fight there will be no countdown show, much less a 24/7. Well, I guess some fights are so good they dont need info-mercials (But the cynic in me has other theories)."
--This is some BS by HBO. This fight needs a countdown or something. I bet Money May or oSCAR talked to HBO. For once its not bob's fault.
Neither Cotto Nor Margarito speak English, and some blame Floyd and Oscar? :bottle:
Well... Oscar is guilty. He studied English. :owned:
http://pacquiaovideo.com/2008/03/marquez-vs-pacquiao-2-hbo-countdown.html
next?
That's stupid. I think they should. I guess it's because Cotto isn't the biggest talker and Margarito doesn't speak English. I guess it would mainly attract the hardcore fans of the sport.
I dont understand how this fight is worthy of a least one halfhour countdown show.
This is a potential fight of the year that could really set the table for the future fights of the welterweight division with two fighters who have provided consistant action throughout their career.
its REALLY going to do terrible numbers among casual fans now...
we will know EXACTLY how many hardcore fans there are when the numbers for this PPV come out because it will have virtually NO media attention (major media that is)...
so how many hardcore boxing fans are in the U.S. do you think?
should be a countdown show...
and then people wonder why boxing isn't on the front pages anymore. do you guys remember the days when being a champion meant a lot? if a fighter was a champion, he was bigger than a celebrity. people would recognize them wherever they go. now look what the fuck has happened. boxing is slowly losing its limelight and if these dumb fuckers like odlh and mayweather dont get outta here, it will lose its limelight forever. i want the ali, marciano, sugar ray leanord, sugar ray robinson, mike tyson days back. everybody around the world knew these people. nowadays, who the fuck is samuel peter in lets say the middle east? who is he in europe?
obviously odlh/mayweather 2 has a part to play in this....
LETS BOYCOTT THAT GARBAGE FIGHT. TRUE BOXING FANS LETS BOYCOTT ODLH/MAYWEATHER 2.
Two fighters that only big boxing fans have ever heard of. Neither with much personality. I dont see why this is confusing to anyone.
Well let's take Hopkins/Calzaghe Countdown as an example. Two fighters with big personalities. Hopkins always controversial with his stupid whiteboy comment, and we had Calzaghe with his humble but arrogant attitude and huge fanbase, and for some reason that countdown wasn't as appealing to me as the De La Hoya/Forbes countdown. There's nothing exciting about Forbes or De La Hoya, it was a tune up fight for god's sake, but the story and surrounding circumstances had me engrossed, not either fighters personality.
I'm not a golf fan and if I watched a countdown type show for the Masters it's not going to make me a golf fan all of a sudden and make me want to watch it, let alone pay for it. I look at the countdowns as a bonus, a treat if you will for the hardcore fans. A reminder, something to get you hyped and maybe invite your "mainstream" friends along to watch the main event.
Margarito is the one getting cheated. He has a good chance to win this fight and his story should be told to boost his fan base for future fights, if he does indeed win. As a boxing fan myself I feel cheated, I don't know jack shit about Margarito and would love to hear his story.
you always underestimate fighters outside of the UK.
I'm sick of this shit. Despite what you may think, just because you're an idiot, doesn't mean I favor people from the UK or have any actual interest in them or their fighters in the least. I hate Calzaghe and his style and wanted B-Hop to win, despite me stating Calzaghe would win. I favored PBF to wipe the floor w/ Hatton and declared it a mismatch months and months before it took place. Get off my dick.
If you can have one fight that promises to be fireworks it's this one.
As I stated earlier in this thread, Pacquiao-Morales II was hugely anticipated, despite Morales being outboxed by Raheem. Two tried and tested warriors in a rematch to the death... and it only did 360k. Just because a fight will be good doesn't mean the general public will tune in.
This fight is not about the talent.
At least on Margarito's end of things it's not.
WTF? that's some bullshit, maybe not a 24/7 (even though I would watch it) but no Countdown?? this is by far one of the best if not the best fight of the year, how could they not want to do a Countdown for it? if it's the language, then it's some serious BS, Vazquez and Marquez had a countdown on Showtime and it was 90% in spanish, just with subtitles, why can't they do the same for Margarito-Cotto? I'm pissed.
Edit: The Vasquez Marquez countdown was a good show, guaranteed Cotto and Marg would be too.
Fuck you ugly head, red K incoming.
I think the biggest difference is the fight level that people around here are making it out to be... 2 ridiculously talented fighters fighting for WW supremacy and the winner is declared the next Jesus... I just don't think it's that way. If that were the case, 2 of the "biggest" fighters would surely do fantastic numbers, but it most likely wont.
you always underestimate fighters outside of the UK. If you can have one fight that promises to be fireworks it's this one. Floyd vs cotto wouldnt bring the action that this fight is going to bring. This fight is not about the talent. It's about two come foward warriors in the ring together. It's a clash of styles. Its a battle between 2 of top 3 ww's in the world. It's a rivalry continued mexico vs puerto rico. you obviously dont know about how intense, how hated, how passionate, and how exciting these rivalry is. But i understand since you are across the pond I wouldnt expect you to know what the rivalry is like just like i didnt care much for joe vs kessler.
fair enough, i disagree given the past ppv performances of more established fighters in comparison with the numbers some of us are projecting. but at least we didnt resort to name calling and red K.

You're making generalized terms. Interest? Of course there's interest as it's two relatively fan friendly fighters who are meeting for, what most would assume, is an eventual shot at PBF. Where me mostly differ is you think if it does 350k that lots of people are tuning in who normally wouldn't, where I see that is simply the boxing faithful.

NO....if they do 300-370k, that means the hardcore fans showed up full mode for them. Something they didn't do for the Cotto-Gomez/Cintron-Margarito double header.
dude why do you keep comparing cotto vs gomez to cotto vs margarito?? It just makes no sense :nonono:
if this fight were to do 350-370K without a countdown, without a 24/7 series which most HBO fights that meet or EXCEED those numbers have, how could that not mean that there IS general interests in that fight. It just seems like some of you are looking for a cop out in case it does match those numbers.

And I still doubt it does 350k, and 300k will be closer to the mark.
Listen I got nothing to argue with you about.
Me saying it won't do more then 300-370 is to those who predict it will do 400k or more.
If you're not one of those people we got no problem. Over and out.
bitch ill fuckin kill you if you talk to me like that again. over the internet.

Success is a loaded term. Everybody who watches boxing a lot or decent amount is anticipating this fight all ready. We don't need the PPV #'s to see that. The point is, because of that the HBO 24/7 series would unlikely draw anymore people who wouldn't all ready tune in (getting back to the original point, which you seem to be straying further and further from).
