see any similarities other than one guy is black and a former heavyweight champion, and cotto is a puerto rican welterweight champion?
Personality, will, chin, style, and the left hook
a lot of people been on cotto's case for being this sulky character, who doesnt hype his fights, doesnt crave attention, doesnt smile much
enter smokin joe frazier. the legendary fighter who carried the same reputation into the ring and outside of it. was not a flashy guy by any means, stayed out of the media. a very contrasting character next to a showman like ali.
not only their personalities are the same but in a way their styles also. miguel might not have the bobin n weavin style but he still smokes, both had great left hooks, ferocious bodypunchers, and wore down their opponents.
strong will possesed by both. shaky chins, but also the abily to get up when hurt. 2 humble warriors going about their business without any cheap talk
all those "flaws" in frazier's personality didnt stop him from becoming a hall of famer, what's the problem with cotto?
what you say?
I agree and I think Cotto is more of a methodical stalker like Louis compared to the relentless pressure Frazier brought.
I agree with the assessment of Cotto as a stalker, although I think there are few other stylistic comparisons between he and Louis. The only true successor to Louis' style I've ever encountered is Arguello.
I don't know if I'd classify Cotto as a brawler.
He's always been an effective boxer-puncher who could be good at using the ring.
Frazier, due to his height and style, had to come forward and apply pressure to be effective. well brawling doesnt mean just coming forward and putting the heat on. there's a method to it. yeah frazier like tyson had size disadvantages so he wasnt gonna do anything in the middle of the ring. but look at the guy like Bowe, boxer or brawler? in truth riddick was an excellent boxer with terrefic jab, but even against a shorter holyfield he chose to brawl. in the second fight evander was actually outboxing him a little bit.
the thing with cotto, he may be a mover and use his jab, but his fights, with torres, judah, wouldnt be boxing performances. miguel can box and he's improved a lot since those fights, but i just think in the tough situation he's gonna go in rough. that's just his nature. he'll box when he'll feel it's appropriate.
but there are tons of examples out there like it. duran off the top of my head
i would agree and disagree. louis didnt got to the body the way frazier and cotto did. he had terrific combinations, but his footwork was a little slow and he would often wait too long on his opponent. Also Louis was a great tactical boxer, but id still say that despite cotto's improvements, i still classify him in the brawling style of a guy like frazier.
like i mentioned before miguel might not have the perfect bobin n weavin ability that frazier had but he still smokes.

Cotto is a black Hispanic so if course he is going to have some black features, but yeah he looks a lot like Louis in those pictures they both have such a blank look on their face.

Cotto is actually more like Joe Louis in terms of look and personality.

Wtf. That is weird. They're faces actually in a strange way kinda look similar.
hmm i don't think frazier would ever back off in the last few rounds like cotto did vs mosely
frazier is not the fighter to back off
but watch frazier vs foreman 2

lol i had too, but i agree in terms of looks Louis takes it
He said personality wise not style.. Notice how Cotto and Miguel walked back to the neutral corner without smiling or saying a thing waited for the eight count then proceeded to demolish their opponent. (a lot of that has to do with a list of rules Louis was given so he wouldn't upset white people) but still a similarity. Also the way he carried himself and how he was kinda shy and didn't talk much.
I think what he means with looks is that Louis was handsome and Frazier was not.. also a good point, we know what ali said about frazier's looks. good point devious.
and yes i got the personality thing, in a way louis is closer to cotto, but maybe i was being somewhat biased because of their styles and thought that frazier was the closest thing to him.
and yes the list was a smack in the face. they came up with that after jack johnson. no white women also. they had like over 10 rules or something. stupid.
I say a mdern day george foreman is just waiting by the side to punch him up to the air in the second round :D
Nice sig you got there. lol naw, dont see a modern foreman anywhere at 147 pounds. he was just one of a kind. margo has a good punch but i just cant compare him to any heavyweights
yep vida is always beautiful. she can ko foreman, margatito and cotto all at the same time. she gave my nuts an 8 count already:D
how so, pleasy specify? i've never thought about the look, maybe, what about personality?
Joe Louis was also very quiet, and i can see a point there. but joe's fighting style was closer to comparrison than Joe Louis. Miguel doesnt really speak english that well, so that plays into it.
but joe was pretty humble too, maybe a little more excited when he talked, but i see those similarities with cotto.
but Joe Louis was also a very good example. you right. but not in terms of style.
