Couldnt have been Live.. they 1st fougt the year you were born.. then rematched the next year..
Nobody Taped it for you either.. as personal VCR's didnt appear until 1978
what year did you see it?
Dont musunderatnd me.. I am not doubting you saw the fight.. but to me.. "Watched" implies you saw it live on tv or were there..
Oh, and by the way -- Liston vs Clay was in 1964 --- I was born in 1962 and while I am at it, we had a HUGE VCR in 1973 at my house, it was called a "cartridge vision" (or something like that as I recall) it was built into a t.v. stand kind of thing -- very ugly...

There used to be a show on t.v. when I was a kid that always ran "classic fights" as they are known now - the first time I watched it was in the 60's -- the question was "which fight was the first fight you ever saw?" and that was my "it" for me my friend, I didn't read anything into the question as to whether it had to be "live" -- just simply -- "what was the first fight I ever saw".....
Sonny Liston vs Casius Clay was the first fight I watched...

the fight that really got me into boxing was tyson vs botha or boatha im not sure. i was still 10 around that time. it was the first time a saw a knock out
Pryor-Arguello and Holmes-Cooney. I'm too lazy to look up which came first. I was about 9 years old and didn't become a fan of the sport until 10 or so years later.
yep all that heat didnt help. people at ringside were sweating, imagine what the fighters were going through while trying to catch a breath. the weather contributed a lot to how they felt in the later rounds.
and im not trying to discredit what they did, both fought well, but not nearly with the intensity they showed in the first fight. they did show grit and determination, but ali being ali, and joe being joe, neither guy wanted to give in. joe especially was a proud man, i bet afterward the punishment didnt hurt as bad as the ali taunts during the promotion. joe never wanted to loose to a guy like ali, he'd fight and get knocked out against foreman 10 times, but it's more painful loosing to ali. really hurt his pride
It was definitely very painful for Frazier, he never talked to Eddie Futch again after that night. All the taunts got very personal for him, I don't think he has ever forgiven Ali, no matter what he says.
Taking into account the heat and their ages, I thought the thrilla in manilla was awesome, it was just relentless and every time I watch it I am in awe of what they both gave and took that night.
My thoughts exactly.
i wish i saw the first fight live too. it was huge and turned into a pretty sweet brawl. to me, i dont know, ive seen better fights than thrilla in manilla, the trilogy was great but the first fight is the highlight. the third was about guts. but it missed all the other parts that were in the first fight.

I love both Ali - Frazier I and III and find it hard to seperate as to which I think is better.
In terms of ability it's obviously the 1st fight, the 3rd was more brutal although the 1st one was brutal and it had everything a fight should have.
I really don't know if we will ever see another heavyweight fight like that ever again, I wish I could have lived through them live and had the thrill of the build up etc. i wish i saw the first fight live too. it was huge and turned into a pretty sweet brawl. to me, i dont know, ive seen better fights than thrilla in manilla, the trilogy was great but the first fight is the highlight. the third was about guts. but it missed all the other parts that were in the first fight.
To me, I thought they tired very quickly because they were fighting in an indoors stadium with no air conditioning, it was standing room only as well so that stadium was packed. It was also in the Philippines, a very humid country, so the temperature in the stadium must have been horrible.

no you not being biased, it's a matter of taste like i said before, i can never really blame another fan for having their own favourite fight, i just wanted to know why you liked it
and i cant agree on the age part. to me at least they showed their age pretty fast and faded early. it wasnt about conditioning, their hearts kept them fighting. joe also had problems with his eye, and it made it that much tougher on him. both took alot of punishment. i doubt that there are a lot of young conditioned fighters out there who could go through that.
and yes they were finished after this fight. but both of them also retired too late with unecessary comebacks.

No, not because Ali won. The first fight made me a fan of Frazier's.
I always liked the third fight because they both showed their champions' hearts even though they were past their primes, they both left everything in that ring, neither man was willing to lose the third fight to the other and they both fought like they were 5 or 6 years younger. They were never the same again.
The event of the third fight was definitely better than the third fight though.
Anyway, I'm probably biased because it was the fight that made me hooked on boxing.
