there's been loads of talk of calzaghe v jones or toney in their primes, but rather than talk about fictional fights that are slightly meaningless now who is out there that you would put calzaghe as the underdog for?
id love to see him go out on something to really shut up his critics...to be honest i think glen johnson is the toughest fight out there for him....
Joe will never gain the respect of fans over here mainly because of the way he fights now. He used to fight better but the way he threw punches against Kessler and especially Hopkins are barf inducing.
To me he looks like a clown in there and it is hard to take him seriously.
Doesn't matter. Everyone he fights certainly has to.

To me it's not really who he beats, but how he beats them. Im an American and dont have anything against Calzaghe, I do respect him more now because he did pull it off against Hopkins, but what I saw in the fashion that he won wasn't too impresive. With me it has nothing to do from where he's from, but how he fights. I want to see this guy put someone on their ass, not have the fight stopped because of a slap fest on steroids.
kelly pavlik decisively
Pavlik would probably be a tougher fight than Jones, I think, simply because he's as relentless as Calzaghe, as refuses to give up, just like Calzaghe. Only problem I see is whether he can take all his power to super middle or light heavy, and whether it'll help if he does. Calzaghe has a tough beard. And whatever else Pavlik might be...he's very, very hittable. Also, while his chin isn't suspect (he's caught some real doozies and always gotten up), if he were to catch 8 or 10 flush shots while he's badly stunned, the right (or wrong) ref might stop the fight. Yeah, I know, Joe doesn't always put alot of force into his punches, but when he does, he's got good power. That, combined with his hand speed and work rate, could mean the end for Pavlik's unmarked column. For Pavlik to beat Calzaghe, he'll have to be much more defensive minded, and I don't know if he's capable of that right now. I don't believe he can KO Calzaghe, but if it goes the distance, and he puts in some serious work on defensive technique before the fight, a decision win would be possible, but in my opinion, unlikely. I think Calzaghe's speed and angles would just be a little much for Pavlik.
i like calzaghe, i think he's good, i don't think he beat hopkins, but that was all academic, definitely not a performance to TAKE a championship belt away from the champ.
but i would like to see calzaghe fight glengoffe johnson. i think johnson would be the toughest fight for him, i don't think jones could last 12 rounds with calzaghe.
dawson doesn't have the experience, froch maybe? still gotta see about that guy, although he hits like a mule, still doesn't have the experience. and i think the same with pavlik, i think that pavlik just doesn't have the world experience yet to fight calzaghe, i think a 3 more world class level fights and pavlik will be in the right mind set and have some of the necessary experience, enough at least, to take on calzaghe, because you know, calzaghe learned a shit load of useful stuff in the ring with hopkins, but then again, maybe the hopkins curse will be in effect, usually guys after fighting with hopkins, their careers take a nose dive afterwards or at least their performances, just look at taylor to name one.....any who.
calzaghe's choices are somewhat limited, i think that for fight fans the best match up would be against glengoffe johnson...................
an aged Calzaghe?
Hopkins was 7 years older than Joe when they fought, still dropped him in an extremly close fight.
If your going to comment on a fight, at least watch it first.
Joe never fought Toney, Jones, Hopkins or even a guy like Virgil Hill or Dariusz.
He never made ANY legitimate effort to get a marquee fight.
So two cruiserweights, a cruiser/heavy, a middleweight who agreed terms and then ducked out of the fight, and a fighter who only now recognises that Calzaghe is on the same planet as him. That's a piss poor list.
And of course I saw the Hopkins fight, dull as it was. If your theory about Pavlik revolves around the fact that Hopkins managed to knock him down then you're fucked. I doubt Hopkins is even in the top half of Calzaghe's hardest hitting opponents and he's only been floored 3 times in 44 fights. Pavlik wouldn't be able to land and would get slapped around silly.
Pavlik would get beaten as badly as Lacy was. A terrible matchup for Kelly.
Not at all.
Joe likes to engage and fight on the inside, we saw what one right hand did to him, now think about a guy like Pavlik, who is far more powerful.
If only Hopkins hadn't ducked him when terms were agreed in 2002 eh. We know now why he did it though - even an aged Calzaghe was way too much for Hopkins. I'm still waiting for someone to answer the question on who he didn't fight though.

Currently now, at this time, nobody can beat Calzaghe out there. That's a fact. Europe or US, not even Pavlik. Calzaghe is a bad fight for Pavlik because of Pavliks style.
Yes the Slap flurries Will be to much for Kelly.
:boxing:
And its his fault that it took him 42 fights before coming someone of note.
Cal wasted his prime fighting B and C level fighters in his hometown.
What a shame.

who was a prime JC in your opinion?
My favourite Joe is the one from the Charles Brewer/Mario Veit kind of era.
That said this Joe probably beats that one. Weird.
Physically prime Calzaghe vs Mentally Prime Calzaghe. I'd say Calzaghe is a lot more versatile now but back then he had a good punch.
It's a pick em.

I have never read such bull shit in all my life.
