I thought this would be a bit different and cool to read how people got their passion for the sport,
i am 24 and have been watching boxing my entire life. I would sit around with my pops and my brothers to watch the fights every week. But i never actually had a passion for it. I watched cause they watched, and i would always end up leaving to go play basketball or hockey with the other kids from my block, i liked the tyson fights, they were quick. I knew the big names and the history but i did not really care for it. It was not until i taped over my brothers Roy jones VS Vinny Pazienza fight that i started gaining the appreciation and the passion for the sport(12 years old). My bro made me search for the fight and tape it for him again. and in those days i had no idea how to work the vcr timer so i recorded the fight and watched it at the same time. Roy Jones skills were amazing. the fight had me on the edge of my seat cheering to a empty room. the speed and power of jones mesmerized me, it was great.
From then on i payed closer attention to the sport. and it is a big part of my life. my boxing collection is outrageous, i watch and get all the boxing matches i can get my hands on. i am very addicted to it and i watch at least 2 fights a day. and me and my bro get together for EVERY Big(to us) fight, which is basically every Saturday
My girlfriend at first hated the amount of boxing i watch. but i turned her:boxing: and now she watches with me and is having her first fight next month.
What about You?
All the men in my family have been watching boxing, as an 80's baby my grandfather loved and still to this day watches it. He used to babysit me when I was small and made me watch it with him, usually the Leonard fights. My dad watched it too of course. I remember all us watching Tyson fights as a family lol. Trinidad & Roy Jones were my favs in the 90's. Now I have so many favorites. I believe the sport has evolved very well.
1.One of my earliest childhood memories was my Dad and uncles getting together to watch some guys named Sugar Ray and Marvelous Marvin fight.
2.Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! came out on Nintendo.
3.The summer of 1992. My dad broke his leg and couldn't work, so me and him followed the Olympics together on TV. They kept showing this story about this Mexican boy, like me, who was trying to win a gold medal for his mother who had passed away. At the time there wasn't a lot of Mexican-Americans on TV, so I clung to every second of his fights. My dad and I would make sure we knew what times he was fighting so we wouldn't miss. Me and my dad watched him win that gold medal together, along with many other belts. Thanks Oscar.
Tyson vs. Tubbs
The first time I ever saw another human KTFO.
Gatti vs. Guys better than he was
The first time I realized sometimes Heart and Courage could carry you to victory against skill and talent.
DeLayhoa, Toney, Whittaker, Old Ray Robinson clips, Ray Leonard, Ali..
All helped me realize that Boxing was an artform and that the Masters make look easy....what I found out for myself later on was the most difficult thing I ever tried to do.
just by having puerto rican blood i had pasion for the sport lol...but on serious note my grandfather and my father showed me great clips from great fighters in the 70s and 80's and early 90's started being a hardcore fan when trinidad fought camacho since present.
Same here (sort of). I was raised in the US, and my father (not to my knowledge) ever watched boxing (I do remember the NBA and the Bulls dynasty). When we came here to Puerto Rico in 1997, I was 10 years old, Trinidad was HUGE...I remember being at my grandfather's house (on my mother's side), and being bored as my ENTIRE family watched the De la Hoya/Trinidad fight. Regardless of whether I watched it or not, in Puerto Rico you can't help but find out what's happening in boxing. Anyway, it wasn't until out of randomness my brother rented Fight Night Round 2, loved it, got hooked. Then, I started watching Ali documentaries and specials on ESPN...Ali was the first fighter that I started to genuinely draw me to boxing. Then, to solidify this crazy addiction I have with boxing...the first fight that I watched LIVE with genuine interest was Cotto/Quintana. I watched that fight alone in the living room, shouting alone (first "symptoms" LOL). I look back on it now and KNOW that I became a fan of boxing IN A VERY GOOD YEAR (2007).
Cotto/Judah- wow! How can you NOT become a fan of Cotto watching this fight?!
Pavlik/Taylor- that HAD to have been one of the best fights of the year.
Mayweather/De la Hoya- Watched the fight from inside my house snooping towards my neighbor's house from across the street. I could see the fight that way. Man, I was hoping DLH would win.
Cotto/Mosley- watched it with my whole family! The undercards were amazing! Two first round KOs and a very questionable decision for Casamayor along with a great main event! Wow! Just wow!
Calzaghe/Kessler- I was hoping someone would dethrone Calzaghe, but somehow he's grown on me. :D
Mayweather/Hatton- I anticipated this fight so badly, and found myself rooting for Mayweather this time. Watched it with my whole family as well.
A great year so far, a lot of upsets, but looks like it'll be a great year. Although, I don't see how 2007 can be topped, it was just too good.
i remember my dad having big boxing parties when i was little and me and brothers had to go to bed early because everybody would be drunk, stoned and probably coked out. Well, i remember in 87, i was 4, i got the balls to sneak out my room and watch a fight which happened to be leonard vs hagler. Ever since then i loved boxing. Just the build up and pure excitement of watching 2 boxers is like no other sport.
Yes man, I saw that! There was genuine rivalry still there at that point. Crazy.
Those guys have got a lot of respect for each other, though, no doubt.
I think after the fights they had you would have to!!!!
Reply to your previous post, yes Michael Watson was amazing, i can remember waitning up to watch the eubank watson fight actually thinking eubank was going to lose. Sad what happened to him but it's a testiment to the mans heart what he has achieved since then.
True champ
Yeah i think if I had never met him i would've been a fan.
I met him twice when i was fairly young and he just totally blanked me and my dad, looked the other way like we were shit.
After that i always hated him and routed for Benn.
Did you see that series Gladiators when Benn and Eubank had to do old style gladitorial events against each other. It was class Benn won and Eubank couldn't handle it. I cant find any footage but it's worth seeing if you can find it.

i started to get interested on boxing at the end of 2006. the interest started with a mix of things, they were showing all rocky movies on cable, and i havent seen them in quite a time, the game fight night, and the anime series fighting spirit. all of that made me curious and started to search for fights and see when they were showing fights on tv. well...i just got hooked with the sport really quick...started to practice boxing myself and just love it since. im really lucky, cos no one ever showed me anything about boxing and i discovered it for myself just how awesome it is =P. well...im still green in this sport cos i have lots to learn, so thats why i enjoy this forum, cos i always leran a lot in here. :boxing:
i never hated benn, i hated eubank. Cocky prick. He was a great boxer before the michael watson fight though.
