Roy is years past his prime.
But he still wants it.
He has gone from the highest of highs(winning the heavyweight championship of the world) to the lowest of lows(back 2 back KO losses)
But he still wants it.
This is a man who seemingly has nothing left to prove. He has been the undisputed pound for pound king for well over a decade, winning titles from middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight, all while making it look easy with his inhuman handspeed, impregnable defense, and virtuoso combinations.
He doesn't have that anymore. But what he does have is his heart and desire back.
No one is giving him a chance.
How is he going to decision someone that is so energetic, throws constantly, and has never been defeated in his pro career? How is he going to knock him out when he hasn't had a KO victory since 2002?
Roy is out looking to prove everyone wrong. This is what great fighters do when they summon that extra something inside of them and somehow manage to come out victorious when no one thought it was possible.
If Roy somehow defeats Calzaghe, what would it do to his legacy?
It's clear as daylight that Roy can't do the things he used to do anymore.
But he still wants it.
i think Pullcounter is being too harsh on RJJ. The man is a legend.
Hes only 3yrs Joe's Senior and 4 years younger than B-Hop.
I for one wouldnt mind this fight taking place as both fighters last fight. Hopefully it will be in Wales, that being the case I might fly down and cheer on Joe :)
I'd imagine it to be a far better exhibition than the joke that took place at the weekend. Hopefully both fighters would be willing to trade combinations, the best man winning .

If RJJ defeats Calzaghe, it means Calzaghe isn't all that great. RJJ is shot and couldn't even stop an out of shape Trinidad.
Calzaghe should be able to stop RJJ because RJJ is shot and his chin is broke.
If Roy were to defeat Calzaghe it would conclusively demonstrate that he is not as shot as he has been made out to be, and I think, considerably add to his legacy. Joe is the Ring SMW and LHW champ and considered to be the best around the weight. If Roy beat him then he would once again be the man, only this time years after his prime.
If you look at the history of boxing, the greatest of the great, I'm talking Ali and Robinson here are distinguished as such by their ability to come back when everyone said they were too old, and beat the champs of the day. If Roy did that I think he would be a real candidate to enter that pantheon.
I think Roy has more to gain from the fight than Calzaghe does, and less to lose. A Calzaghe win would just be confirmation of his current status, with Roy not being seen as a particularly impressive opponent. If Calzaghe lost though, all excuses aside I would have to say that he is not as great as I currently think he is. A truly great boxer, one who really is the man at his weight classes, would not lose to todays RJJ.
A fair assessment?
