Amateur-like punches

Does this shit mean that the monster hammer swing of the almighty Charlie Zelenoff has a change of similar success? Oh, i think so my friends B-Hop wouldnt even see it coming :boxing:

If the fight laster another three rounds who would have won those rounds? Thos slaps may have looked like not much but they had Hopkins tired and confused and looking for a way out. Fighters who are dominating and not hurt and uncomfortable don't fake injury to buy more time.

Nobody has been able to counter this argument from the beginning, L2B. They have been categorically owned. There are people who come here who are Boxing fans, and there are people who come here who understand the sport of Boxing and can interpret it. The difference shows up in situations like this. They can fall back on the judges all they want. Look at the decisions Boxing judges have given us over the years. They're literally never accurate. Most of the time not even close. I'm not sure how much of it is intentional or how much of it is influenced by the crowds ooowww and ahhhs and how much is just lost via limited angles. I believe that very slick defensive craftsmen like James Toney, Winky, PBF sometimes Hopkins (but generally not as much) get the shit end of the stick because the subtleties are lost or easily misconstruded due to the judges limited angles, speed of the action and crowd reactions. JT,Winky,PBF do a lot of beautiful defensive work on the inside and (I have been in front row of fights) live even from the front row its hard to really tell what landed or landed cleanly. And thats without looking at the sholder rolls and the 100 other subtle things that these guys do that is easily missed live in a roaring crowd and the boxers backs are to you. I'm begining to believe that Judges should have closed captioned TV's with commentary filtered out. I also believe they should be given the ability to manually changed camera's and be able to replay certain parts of a round during the minute break between rounds.....they of course would have to have there score in before the begining of the next round.

Lets face it, Calzaghe would have to knock RJJ out in the first round to impress some people, and even then we would hear "well he caught Roy cold, it wouldnt happen again". Remember that Calzaghe has had major hand injuries over the last 5 years or so that most boxers would retire from. Look at the KOs on his record BEFORE the injuries and you would notice a harder hitting guy. If he doesnt hit hard, or slaps, or throws innefective flurries or whatever, then how exactly is it that he is still undefeated? Surely Lacy, or Kessler, or Hopkins would just walk straight through this happy slapper and knock him out? If Joe had not been pushing forward for 12 rounds you wouldnt have had a fight because big mouth Hopkins came to spoil and run. Hopkins was at his most negative - and that is because he didnt fancy getting into a war with Calzaghe - or indeed a proper boxing fight. Calzaghe is damned if he does, damned if he doesnt and according to so many "experts" on these forums, isnt worth the belts and the accolades he has. I dont remember hearing people complain that Hopkins aint fought in Wales, or RJJ aint fought in Europe - America is not the centre of the universe, and the ring is built for two boxers and a referree - it dont matter where it is!

End of story. have to disagree with you , gunn. hitting and not getting hit is part of boxing but that's not what it's all about. for me the point of boxing is to hurt your opponent more than he hurts you. round by round i judge it by who hurt their opponent more that round. that being said bernard's punches hurt joe more but he just didn't throw enough. even if joe didn't hurt nard much with his punches , in most rounds bernard just didn't throw enough and obviously even joe's pitty pats and grazing punches hurt more bernard more than not landing any.

The punches have to have some effect on the guy as well. 3 slapping jabs by one guy which the opponent partially blocks and walks threw does not equal 1 right hand that puts you on queer street or Knocks you down. Technically the guy who threw the 3 jabs hit more than he was hit 3:1 but the clean effect punches were by the one right hand. Swarmers, jabs, punches that aren't loaded up upon are all well and good... but if you aim to win a fight by literally doing 0 damage to a fighter... then it's not longer boxing. You've essentially turned it into a dance competition. Further, the sport of boxing isn't about "hitting and not being hit." That is simply the most effective way to win. If the sport was about hitting and not being hit, then I'm pretty sure every brawler and Mexican fighter were in the wrong sport....

I agree as well, while those punches didnt hurt hopkins, it was more than enough to win the fight for Calzaghe imo They shouldn't win fights... which is my problem w/ all of this. One of the commentators of HBO said that Calzaghe was throwing amateur-like punches. I think that is absolutely correct and that is exactly the reason why I don't like Calzaghe as a fighter. He is coming forward just throwing alot of ineffective punches, hitting nothing but gloves and air. I agree that he won the fight, but i'm still not impressed by his performance. Neither Hopkins nor Calzaghe are orthodox fighters. Calzaghe will slap his way to a victory, and try to do the patented "De la Hoya ineffective flurry" to steal the round. Hopkins will try to headbutt, elbow, shoulder, low blow and act his way to a victory, and will spend most rounds trying to con you into a sucker punch.

Those "Amateur-like punches" have got him a few million quid in the bank, Super middle and light heavy lineal championships and an undefeated record. i am not sure he really gives a shit :)
