Calzaghe got the decision, but he put together a lackluster performance mainly due to Hopkins not letting him fight his fight. Hopkins, at 43 and being the underdog, executed a gameplan and could've gotten the nod. Keep in mind, Hopkins is 43.
What I'm saying is, in comparison to most of the other Calzaghe performances, it wasn't a good one. Overall it was OK, it got the job done, but I expect better from Joe.
I respect your opinion.
I don't think it was a terrible performance because if it was, Hopkins would have taken advantage of it all night.

both imo.
hopkins in spite of being old prove that he is one of the most difficult fighters to handle, and very difficult to catch. a true legend.
and for calzaghe for being his first fight on america, against a fighter that makes you look bad, and being able to overcome the down on the first round and also for making the adjustments and loosening himself through the fight.
both fighters have all my respect...
I don't get it why he didn't try to land uppercuts on Hopkins when he rushed in with the head, or why he didn't throw a few shots with more power. As I said, I can only put it down to hand problems. He also waited too long, but I was glad to see he managed to cut off the ring somewhat, rather than aimlessly following Hopkins around.
Yeah, terrible performance, but made nice adjustments similar to the Kessler fight, only it looked much worse. I guess credit goes to Hopkins for possessing such a difficult style. I wouldn't want to fight him.
I don't think it was a terrible performance because if it was, Hopkins would have taken advantage of it all night. Calzaghe didn't square his feet up, he didn't get off balance too much, his punches were straighter, he used better head movement, used a good jab down the stretch. I wouldn't call that terrible.
The uppercuts were what Calzaghe should have done more of, I agree. He should have taken a step back when Hopkins lunged forward with his right hand and shot a counter uppercut right back at Hopkins. But apart from that, I thought it was an OK performance.

stop biting my shit son.:cool2:
Or it's like what Lampley said, he decided to slap more to have more speed and accuracy on his shots.

I guess just comparing to his other fights. He never looked that bad. I feel his hands are totally gone now, too.

I honestly didn't see what was so awful about it, sure he could've done a few more things to make himself more effective but as you said, it's very hard to look good against Hopkins.

Everyone else on his resume
I'm probably one of the biggest Calzaghe supporters here but the performance last night was awful. He did what he needed to do to win, but looked bad doing it. I do agree though, that he was able to make the right adjustments. Very few people are gonna look good against Hopkins though.

Calzaghe.
He made adjustments when he was losing the fight, he showed some technical improvements as well. I didn't see what was so lackluster in his performance.

I think it shows how good Calzaghe is that he was getting beat up by the southpaw killer (counter-straight right hand). After about a minute into the fight, I thought for sure that it was over (and I'm not the guy who usually waves fights off in the first round), but Joe was getting nailed with straight right counters again and again in the first round.
But as he always does, Joe Calzahge adapts and does whatever he needs to in order to turn the fight into something that he has the advantage in. That is what impressed me in his win over Mikkel Kessler, and now that is what impressed me last night in his win over Bernard Hopkins.
