Watched all of Saturday's fights, and I have to say I expected a lot more atmosphere, and I think factors effecting that included; lights, audience activity, a big new venue not at full capacity, the ring entrances, and more.
The under card boxers just plain walked in it seemed, with barely any music. The lights were poor compared with most events.
Calzaghe and Hopkins ring entrances were lacklustre aswell.
Even Calzaghe vs Reid ring entrances had more lights, music, atmosphere compared with the supposed way bigger fight between 2 top p4p legends.
Thoughts folks?
Yeh I'm all for the hype and stuff when it's called for, and woulda bowed to the yanks doing it proper. Boxing is just a small ring with 2 guys, not always the most eye pretty sport. The hype, build up, getting sense of the characters, them charging out determined, pumped to music, lights, is what makes it. Sport is entertainment, and build up for boxing is massive.
Even years ago, the Calzaghe Reid venue was streaks ahead than this new Thomas and Mack Centre. There was an entertainingly good atmosphere there which a top sporting event should have. There was top quality lights, music, smoke, ring entrances, commentary, just buzz. But without being tacky like Rocky or something.
Saturday had none of that and was supposed to be a bigger fight? Just didn't feel like it, wouldn't inspire me to travel to a boxing event, which is what the industry needs people to do.
Everybody is entitled to there opinion but all this ring entrance is getting boring these days, I love the Eubanks..Naz entrances because you get that and the fight in the ring, These days is just boring ring entrance and then boring fights but i guess some people like them that way.
I agree, it didn't have the overall atmosphere I thought it would or should have. But I think that's poor promoting / venue management more so than anything else. I don't think the entrances have changed too much, and I for one appreciate less fluff and WWF type bullshit. I threw up in my mouth when Spinks did the ring walk last year with his rap video entourage, like they were more interested in getting on MTV than with fighting. But maybe that's the way of the future. We'll have to ask Floyd about his transition to WWE / acting. Oh, and while I'm bitching, I hate seeing fighters with websites markered across their backs. It's so whore-ish it's almost humiliating.
