note: I used the Ring Magazine welterweight rankings for this post which could be found here (http://thering-online.com/ringpages/ratings2.html)
I also used a bracket system that most tournaments would use.
As we all know Floyd Mayweather acquired the Linear Championship by defeating Carlos Manuel Baldomir in 2006 after having defeated the number 3 ranked contender in Zab Judah @ the time.
(I'd also like to point out that besides these two.. Mayweather has NEVER fought another top ten ranked welterweights)
Currently Miguel Cotto is the number one contender to the welterweight crown.
He has fought both Mosley and Quintana who are currently ranked 2nd and 3rd.
Quintana eliminated Paul Williams who is currently ranked 4th, and Wiliams eliminated Margarito who is ranked 5th.
Margarito eliminated Cintron (who is currently ranked 9th) and Clottey (who is 7th) for a title shot.
Quintana>Williams>Margarito>Cintron and Clottey
By defeating Shane Mosley he takes Collazo (who is ranked 8th) out of the picture as well.
Shane Mosley>Collazo
He also beat Judah (who is ranked 6th)
So who is left? NOBODY.
The Play-offs are over and it's time for the championship game..
In any other sport this would NOT be acceptable yet for some reason it is in boxing?
Nothing but facts..
And to those fake boxing fans who act like they get a share of what a fighter makes bitching about the money isn't right. With great fights comes great money.. Hatton v. Mayweather was a success because of the promotion behind it. Before nearly nobody knew who Hatton was here in the states.. That did not stop the fight from being made. Cotto had more fans in the states then Hatton did Pre-Mayweather fight and for a big fight such as Mayweather v. Cotto they would not have to travel across an ocean to see it. We are boxing fans.. and we should be worrying about seeing great fights not how much a fighter is getting payed anyways.
Anyway, I know the fight will never pop off but I just though I would clear some ishh up.
In an interview in 5 years time Mayweather confesses that he did duck Cotto, but he did have a good reason.
Vince Mcmahon had promised him that if Mayweather could keep fighting pointless fights he would include him in the mother of all wrestling storylines. The plot revolves around a secret affair between Mayweather and that known homosexual, the Undertaker. Theres a bit of hanky panky and then a rematch between Money May and a jelous Big Show. I don't want to ruin the result for everyone, but it does involve a 18 inch dildo.

it's obvious that cotto is floyd's #1 contender, no one disputes that, but saying that floyd is ducking cotto is dumb.
floyd/cotto will happen in 2009... it's too big a fight to not happen and HBO will promote the shit out of it. All that needs be done is for Arum to pay Floyd's price.

Good post. Took your time!
People are in too much of a hurry.
This fight will happen. Everybody bitched and complained saying that Hatton/Mayweather would never happen, or Mayweather/Judah... man, he ducked them bad...
If Floyd continues to fight for a few years and doesn't take on Cotto, then, and only then, should bull shit be brought up about ducking. People act like there's boxing matches between top guys being sanctioned every other week or some shit. Settle the fuck down.
I mean, I know w/ the Zag/Hop fight over you're all back to having nothing to talk about except the same old bull shit, but seriously, haven't you learned by now?
I think anyone suggesting that Floyd ducked Cotto before and ducked top Welterweights is stupid.
De La Hoya is much bigger challenge then Antonio Margarito and Ricky Hatton is a much bigger challenge then then 6-10 (for Floyd anyway. I realize that Collazo gave Ricky a good amount of problems, but Floyd would box collazo's socks off)
It's not like Mayweather was fighting Gomez and Brsusles in the mean time. He gave us some great fights and they were worthy challengers.
Now however it's time to set up to the big plate and fight Cotto. I'm pretty sure he said that he'd be willing to fight Cotto if Arum wasn't with him too (ESPN FNF "in this corner" thing on ESPN.com).
You established 2 things Devious:
1. That Cotto is the clear #1 contender (obvious for a long time now)
2. That umm....something about Hatton.
Do you honestly think that Floyd should have fought Cotto first then Hatton? Cotto was way unproven at the time. He had a big win over Judah and some other noteable ones, but Hatton had a big win over Tszyu and a shot Castillo plus some noteable ones. Hatton was way more deserving then Cotto at the time.
That and why bitch and moan about that when we got to see Cotto-Mosley? We got to find out how good Cotto really was and it was a good fight.
He just needs to fight him now. I'll give him a pass on De La Hoya, but he needs to fight Cotto after that or he is ducking him.
its really sad and funny to see the lengths people go to try to prove floyd is ducking
when its as simple as: Floyd will fight whoever will make him the most money. Period
Why Floyd won't face Cotto. Two reasons;
1) He'll get beat.
2) He's too busy with his acting/wrestling career. Hell, he might even be on to recording an album now.
IF they DO end up fighting, it won't be for years when they're trying to stage the inevitable "I should be retired but I can't seem to leave" PPV event.
yeah i definitely agree with on the money part. i honestly think that floyd is ducking cotto because his excuse doesnt make sense. how would fighting another young determined undefeated welterweight champion that everybody knows not make enough money
agreed. this one fight, just this one fight would re-establish his credibility and if he won would not only silence a lot of critics but also satisfy them.
Everyone is not out to see Floyd lose.. they just want to see him fight the best.
If he did this there would be no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

I am a big mayweather fan but i am dissappointed that floyd isn't interested in fighting cotto.
Hopefully cotto calls him out and their becomes a bigger demand for the fight.
Mayweather has brought the criticism on himself. I wouldn't say I dislike the guy more that I am annoyed by him for the last couple years and his fans.
Before if you mentioned anything negative against Floyd it was like blasphemy and gawd forbid!
Now I am happy that people are finally starting to see the light and hopefully this pressure by the fans drives him to fight the best or to retire.
totally agree.when i first came here i was both a floyd fan and a cotto fan more so a floyd fan, then i got here and well............you know...........

I agree with this dude and Clegg as well. I am big Mayweather fan who has been totally turned off by his actions of late. He simply wants biggest payday with minimal risk. Nobody wants to see DLH-FMjr. 2 I'd rather seem him fight his father. The only fight out there for him is with Cotto POINT BLANK PERIOD!!!! The thing that really irks me is that although Cotto has improved over the past year or two I think Mayweather still beats him handily so what does he have to fear. As a boxing fan I would love to see Margarito-Cotto but in a weird way I'd rather see Cotto face FMjr. because I think Margarito has a real good chance at beating Cotto and would blemish Cotto and probably ruin any chance of FMjr fighting Him

A+++++++ post
And yet he didn't want to take the large payday offered by Margarito.

Chi you hit the nail in the head. He wants easy win fights with large pay day nothing else.
Actually he just wants large paydays methinks. I don't think he cares who he faces as long as it gets him double digits.
