I remember thinking while watching Margo beat up Cintron: Damn Margo's punches are so wide, and Cintron just stands there. Cotto is so much faster, he will hit Margarito with 2 or 3 punches before Margaritos punches get there.
This is how the fight should go. Cotto sets everything up with his jab; goes in, connects a combination, then steps out. He keeps doing that for 12 rounds, he wins an easy decision. Unfortunately, thats not whats going to happen.
This is what will really happen.
Rounds 1-3: Cotto will do exactly what I described in the paragraph above. He will start the fight going backwards, working the jab. Going in an out while throwing combinations. Margaritos punches are just to wide and slow to catch Cotto cleanly, Cotto will dominate Margo. He will probably win the first three rounds. Unfortunately, Margo is no Gomez.
Rounds 4-6: Cotto is to confident; he has dominated Margo so far, but Margarito has a granite chin. Cotto stops counterpunching, he starts walking forward. Cotto's warrior spirit will get the best of him. Margo doesnt back up; they stand in the middle of the ring, exchanging punches in close quarters. The exchages will be furious, and Cotto will get the best of Margo. But again; Margo's chin is solid rock, and Cotto's chin is not. Sooner or later, Cotto will get caught. Wouldnt be surprised if Cotto went down. But there is no doubt in my mind that Cotto will get up if he does get caught.
Rounds 7-9: Cotto has tasted Margaritos power, and he realizes he will not knock him out. He goes back to boxing; Margarito keeps coming forward, but Cotto keeps hitting him with his jab and combinations. The tide turns yet again, and Cotto will get the best of Margo in these rounds.
Rounds 10-12: Cotto keeps going backwards; throwing his jab, hitting Margo. But that mexican just wont back up. Cotto is getting tired and frustrated. He has hit Margo with everything he has and nothing, no real reaction. Margarito just keeps going forward, taking control of the ring and the fight. Cotto is good enough to win one of the last three rounds, like he did in the Mosley fight. Just enough to win the decision.
Result: Cotto wins a close decision, 7 rounds to 5. Cotto is just good enough to pull it out, but it wont be easy.
Hehe, when you put it like that.... I see exactly what you mean, and I agree.
Right on, J. :beerchug: I swear, if Cotto beats Margarito and then takes out Mayweather they will make movies about this guy's life! It's pretty exciting to be honest. He's that close.
Definately, it's truly us, and the winner of course, who benefits. A win for Margarito puts him over the Moon. A win for Cotto is another feather in his cap, but only hardcore fans would appreciate it. There's no business sense in Miguel taking the fight.
If Margarito wins he will become a star. Cotto will stay a star even if he loses and Top Rank will have a new Margarito franchise in the West Coast to match the one they have in the East, with Cotto.
Margarito wins; and Arum's company will see tens of millions of dollars in profit over time. Margarito loses; and there is very little upend, very little profit overall and Cotto just keeps trucking along with no overwhelming boost created by beating Margarito, who will be inevitably devalued after his 6th loss and on his way out..
This isn't just about one fight. This is about a boxload of fights.
Namean?

Ohhhh, definitely. Bob Arum comes out ahead no matter what happens. Still, whoever wins the fight will come out golden. And both guys believe they are going to win. Thats why its gonna be a great fight.

Mosley is fighting Judah; and I actually think that if Cotto and Mosley both win, they will fight again around November. He could take an easier road, but if I am his promoter, my goal would be a fight with PBF. I think beating Margarito is probably the best way to reach that goal. Keep the media and fans pressuring PBF till he HAS to fight Cotto.
Ok, for me though I think Arum is just trying to make a business decision here that's going to make him alot of money. I sincerely believe Top Rank is banking on a Margarito victory.
More lucrative less dangerous fights like the Mosley rematch for example.. He could pass time with some title defences until the right matchup comes along.. You know? Arum would only put Cotto in with someone like Margarito as promoter of both guys. Namean?

I think it might be more risk than reward for Cotto, but who else is there? i think this is the best option for Cotto right now.

Do you think this is a good fight for Cotto? If you were Miguel's promoter or manager would you have him fight Margarito? Good risk versus reward scenario in your mind?

Ohhh yeah, I am pretty sure the fight will be good. I think my analysis is pretty good; then again my analysis might just go down the toilet when they fight. I think Cotto will win, but I am not that confident. Like you said, 1 punch with a weird angle might destroy all of my well thought out analysis.
looking at their punching technique, cotto should outbox marga but antonio has the right swarming style to really get in miguelito's face. this will be a great fight

Good post, Joe. Food for thought. :fing02:
Margarito throws punches from all angles though. Some are wide, and some are straight as a piston. Hopefully it's a fight this good. ^ Hopefully.
