People say Cotto is a very good fighter and hits the body methodically for continual pain. How can you get behind such an hype? This shit wouldn't be allowed in any other fighting sport. There is a REASON he is fighting Gomez. Ask yourself, if the man is so good, why Gomez then? Couldn't he have found someone better? Is he waiting for Mayweather? that would be even more stupid because it's very likely pbf hangs them after Hoya. The main reason Cotto punches much to the body is he is just isn't a very fast fighter. Already, at 27 has taken more punishment than most elite fighters in a 5 year period. He compensates his lack of speed by doing the body work. I think very poorly of these kinds of fighters. They are the shit one day and the other they are just shit. Think Katsidis for one, Gatti for another one and now Cotto. Cotto can pull that trick vs maybe 75% of the current opposition but I'm not buying the hype. Are you?
For one Cotto has an unique opportunity to get a jump to the number one status, yes that is floyd mayweather. But he needs to get to him FIRST. Lets face it, Floyd is getting older. He's 31 and his style relies as much on speed and sharp reflexes as Roy Jones' did. Meaning he will start losing soon provided he keeps fighting. Whoever beats him, no matter in what condition, will be seen as the new star, whoever he is, that's how big mayweather got. Cotto losing would throw him right back with the likes of Citron, Margarito and Williams, which isn't a bad place to be, not at all, but it's not quite THE spot he wants. Besides, judging by how often cotto gets hit, if he is to lose it won't be pretty and he will have trouble bouncing back.
They can't get the fight with Mayweather. Have you heard? Let's not go in circles here.. You didn't read what I wrote. Top Rank doesn't have overwhelming faith in him. Clearly, you have more faith in Cotto than I'm referring to.. Either that or there is a blindspot in your awareness.
Understand something; Top Rank believes that Cotto could potentially fall to anyone.. Clottey, Cintron, ect. That is why Arum has been so desperate to make the matchup with Mayweather, now. That is why Arum has been saying that Floyd will "..never, ever, ever, ever fight Cotto, blah, blah.."
You said it youself here in the end of this post.. ^ Confused?
You don't have to buy it. Just don't tell me Arum wouldn't do that. It makes you sound naive. Arum wouldn't do that? That's the basis for your argument? You better believe he would do it. He would do it alright.

cottos a great fighter. If theres a big upset tonight ill still say hes a great fighter. Hes fighting great oposition now. Sugar shane and judah are obviously huge names to have wins over and i think gomez is a great matchup.
He's beaten 10 current, former, or future world champions and has beaten two of the best five welterweights in the world. The only thing left for him to do is to wipe out the other one (tonight's winner in the undercard) and there's one only man left: Floyd Mayweather.
That's not hype. That's reality.
:lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:
k.

Interesting but i don't buy it. Arum wouldn't do that. As much as we hate him for representing stuff we wanted out of boxing (he could take don king with him on his way out btw and Golden boy as an brand, leaving oscar though) one thing he is not is dumb. Cotto is on a mission to get the spoils floyd gathered in his career and like a good wine, you want him old and rested.

Cotto has earned his consideration as a winner. We don't know how Alexander The Great, Napolean, or Ghengis Khan pulled off all their victories.. Some of them may have been by the skin of their teeth or through nefarious means.. Who knows? I give Cotto props as a winner.
To me it's blatantly obvious though that Top Rank has about as much actual faith in Cotto as some of his worst detractors. There's a reason Top Rank is again attempting to roll out Margarito and Cotto on the same East Coast double feature against opponents they are heavily favored to beat. As we all know the plan is for Tony and Miguel to face each other later this year, and as I've said before; Top Rank undoubtedly believes that Margarito can, and will, beat Cotto. It's a setup. They want to split their investment.
It's not even nescessary to consider who would win - just look at the simple business of it. If Cotto wins it further damages Margarito's market value but does little to increase his, if Margarito wins it will exponentially boost his value and do little to no damage whatsoever to Miguel Cotto's market value.
Arum is willing to sacrifice Cotto's legacy for the sake of his business.

I think Cottos resume is better then floyds... So is he hype? If he is what does that make floyd?
And that tells alot about you. Also the Ricky Hatton wife thread who was crying after Hatton was KOed or the Katsidis many didn't even know existed prior to the casamayor fight. talk about open books
You are the most ignorant shit. Why is Cotto fighting Gomez? 1st off there wasn't much top level competition to choose from who was available so hence they go for a marketing fight with Gomez. 2nd why not give the man a easier fight after fighting tough fight after fight it's a free fight! PBF fought a lot more gimme fights then this so if thats a point your trying to make then bring all the other fighters in the same category.
Cotto has one speed and one style? HAHA and you call yourself a fight fan watch the Mosley fight Im sure all the writters and top boxing critics in the world will point out that he exhibiting multiple dimensions to his style and spped at which he fought. ANd as far as stamina problems i don't see it at 140 yes but 147 he is a wrecking ball. Judah has stamina problems.
Do us all a favor watch somemore fights maybe read a book or two on boxing and then post on here with some actual facts not this wannabe shit
No one else available? You buy that? For the number 2 of the world? Come on! Oh about floyd mayweather, he was fighting in his own category (lightweight) , at 23 years of age, an undefeated p4p king, no one even does that anymore, so we can't say nothing about a man who, after reaching his 31st spring chooses to make a little safer money (and the most money btw). Btw Williams will come back.

Top Rank doesn't think Cotto can beat Margarito, do they?
If, or when, Margarito took down Cotto it would boost Tony's market value considerably. Meanwhile Miguel Cotto would retain his fanbase almost entirely - even in defeat. Top Rank wouldn't put Miguel against a big, extremely durable, heavy hitter like Margarito unless he was one of theirs, and it was a very wise business move. They stand to benefit more if Cotto loses to Margarito, and they would surely be counting on it.
It doesn't matter if Cotto's fans or the optimists think Cotto can go on forever without getting knocked out. His promotional company has been taking calculated risks and making matchups that clearly indicate they're well aware of the potential danger.. Well aware.
This is a no brainer. :drive: We can all talk about this after it happens..
If, both guys can get that far..
People say Cotto is a very good fighter and hits the body methodically but ....blah blah blah... Couldn't he have found someone better? Is he waiting for Mayweather? . ....blah blah blah...
Yes an Gayweather would not fight him!!!!
Vs who? Best win in my book was Mosley but Mosley is past his prime in a weight category you have to be fast. Imagine if Mosley wasn't open all night for Cotto's right hands or even being open, imagine if he had gone to the body early. ....blah blah blah... Cotto being ranked number 2 in most ranks, he should be fighting someone in the top 5 at least! "No one was avaiable, he had to have Gomez" ....blah blah blah... , since when the number two ranked in boxing's best division has trouble getting a good fight?
Imagine = not real = never happen = you are stupid
ESPN Top 5:
1. Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0) Would not fight Cotto cuz he's afraid
2. Miguel Cotto (31-0) can't fight himself Well maybe in your stupid imagination
3. Antonio Margarito (35-5) was suppused to fight cotto instead fought PW and lost so he had to get back in line and if he wins tonight he will secure a fight wit Cotto
4. Shane Mosley (44-5) Already got beat by Cotto!!!
5. Carlos Quintana (25-1) His only defeat is becuse he couldn't last past 5 rounds with Cotto
How come the #1 haven't fought neither is willing to fight #2,3, 4 or 5? :owned:
2501, y does Miguel need a "tune-up", after his last two fights were against real good fighters in both Mosley and Judah?
In YOUR opinion..not what Arum is trying to set up. But how do YOU feel?
it's a sabbatical fight.
Someone better, that will help him in making the Mayweather fight. I would have said Paul Williams had he not lost. Maybe even Quintana rematch, since he beat Williams, and he could have unified....Mosley rematch wouldn't be a bad choice seeing that it was a close fight.
But Gomez just beat a old Gatti, who got dismantled by Baldo. One thing is, that is why they fight the fights. You never know what will happen. I am rooting for Miguel though. Just thought that since they went so hard on the Mayweather tip, they could have showed how hongry Cotto was by taking on a bigger and better challenge. That is my only gripe...but what does it mean? The fight has been made and they fight tonite. I just wanted some views on this "tune-up", when he just fought Mosley and Judah. Who are exceptional fighters...
i bet the names u mention were unavailable or would not want the fight or it would be too soon for them to fight again. So it was his best option.
I've heard rumors here and there that he wont put Cintron in with Cotto. If Gomez were to WIN, Cotto can FORGET about PBF and even I would admit that knowimsayin?
Yea you right on that one....what are we going to see outta Gomez tonite 2501?..the boy looks determined, flashbacks of when he first called out and beat Manfredo Jr, who is vastly overrated IMO.
However, lets both be realistic...will Arum still go ahead with the Mexico v. PR if Cintron and Gomez were to win tonite? I'm am not hating on Cotto or Marg. But you know how this sport is. One person can be on and the other can be off, which calls for an upset....

Well, seeing that the plan is to fight Antonio Margarito who stylistically will provide MANY problems to Cotto after this Gomez fight, I dont have a problem with it. Also, Cotto fights about 3 times a year. If we look at all the "stars" we have in boxing, we're lucky if we even have one fight 2 times a year.
So Miguel Cotto fighting Gomez to set up Cotto/Margarito and the fact he will be fighting a 3rd time again at the end of the year makes this more than OK in my opinion. Do you not agree?
Now, since the only ones really complaining about this are Floyd fans, lets look at it from a business perspective as many Floyd fans usually do as reason s to justify unpopular decisions Floyd makes.
Whether you admit it or not, whether you know it or not, Alfonso IS one of the most recognizable boxing "figures" to the mainstream, casual fans. Gomez was exposed to the American public on a MAJOR cable network on a weekly basis. He became the favorite on ESPN's The Contender and even though he did not win the season, he became the fighter that everyone who watched that show wanted to follow from that cast. After the contender, there was no doubt that Gomez had the attention and grasp of the casual fan and this was confirmed by Arturo Gatti's camp. They chose Gomez as Gatti's next opponent not just because Gomez was still yet to be proven, but because he already has a name with the casual fan. And what happened? Gomez created a shockwave in the Boxing world by KO'ing Gatti into retirement. Yeah yeah yeah, "Arturo was way past his prime". True, but Gomez was "too green" to be even be able to get past an old washed up Gatti right? He wasnt supposed to win, but he did. And in spectacular fashion. He no doubt generated more interests and fans with that performance. Enough for ESPN to broadcast his next fight against proven veteran journey man, Ben Tackie. Again, here is Alfonso Gomez being exposed to the general public on a major cable network.
So while HBO and Showtime is a service that you normally have to add on and isnt attainable for ALL cable suscribers, NBC and ESPN are. So Gomez technically has had more exposure to the mainstream that most Boxer at his level that come out on Showtime and HBO. That is a certified fact. What I'm saying that the likely hood of Gomez being recognized over Cintron, Quintana, Williams, and Clottey by a CASUAL is higher than vice versa. You have to prove to me other wise and explain if you feel different.
What that means for Cotto is MORE exposure to the mainstream that is interested and more possibility of PPV numbers that FLOYD and his FANS want Cotto to improve on so they can fight. Is that not right? Give me a name of someone that can do this better than Alfonso Gomez and Antonio Margarito?
So if you are a promoter, and you want to promote Cotto vs. Margarito which has all the makings of a Puerto Rico vs. Mexico event, then the way you do it is by having both fighters take someone on in a CO FEATURE. The first step for the Puerto Rico vs. Mexico has been taken with Cotto facing Gomez and Cintron facing Margarito. If everything goes as plan, we're gonna have a HUGE event in Margo vs. Cotto.
ok brah. I like the way that you broke that down. I see what you mean on the EXPOSURE side of it. I never really looked at it that way. I looked at the opponent side of it. You feel me? Like Cotto NEEDS to be fighting the biggest names since Floyd is not going to fight him right away. But I do see what you mean from a Promoter's stand point. This is a set up for the Mexico v. PR...
However, lets both be realistic...will Arum still go ahead with the Mexico v. PR if Cintron and Gomez were to win tonite? I'm am not hating on Cotto or Marg. But you know how this sport is. One person can be on and the other can be off, which calls for an upset....
who do you think cotto should of fight instead of gomez?
