Calzaghe sold just over 50,000 seats to the biggest fight of his career against Kessler, and sold less in his prior big fight against LACY and didnt sell out the arena for that Lacy fight.
Hatton sells out 55,000 seats in a few days for the lowest quality opponent he has had in years.
-----
Calzaghe comes over to the US to fight Hopkins. His fight still isnt sold out and might not sell out as far as my knowledge.
Hatton sold out the arena in 30 mins and sold out several closed cercuit locations around vegas, brining 30,000 brits with him
yeah good points.
I dunno Ottke turns my stomach to honest.
I would have loved to see it at the time, but I can't rip Joe for not taking that fight.
I mean I actually thought David fucking Starie could have got a decision against Ottke. Ottke has a lot of 'wins'
I think its a really good thing that Joe is only now fighting Hopkins, and closing out his career more or less.
With Joe, hes really come on the last 3 or 4 years due to experience. He now is so much better technically than he was in his mid 20s, a little Hopkins like in that respect. Doesnt waste anything, strategically unmatched.
With his brittle hands, if he was unearthed (to the american audience, and thus the world of boxing fans...) at say.. 25, the demand for him would have been overwhelming. He would have fought the best p4p guys at the time (Roy Jones, Toney possibly..) while not at his boxing peak (which I believe is about now) and his flame might have burnt out rather quickly. (Possible losses, Broken hands etc..)
Taking a few easier fights in between has allowed him to nurture the hands through some tough times, and kept him an amazingly fresh 36 year old.
Still, if you have an in depth look at his fights, some were much tougher than seem to the average fan, because not many knew anything of the european fighters he has faced. As we've seen with Kessler (yes, the Miranda situatoin is U>G>L>Y) some europeans that were 12 UD on Joes record are really really really good!
All in all, beating the names Eubank, Lacy, Kessler, Hopkins (if all goes well..) hopefully followed by Roy Jones still makes his career a pretty darn awesome one!
Hatton is more popular than Calzaghe, but he can't hold Calzaghe's jock strap when it comes to talent and skill....Hatton is overrated, Calzaghe is the greatest Super Middleweight of all time and a hall of famer.
Dont talk shit, sven ottke was the main man and so was joe in the super middleweight divison both world champions and undefeated fighters,it was only right they should get it on but it never happened wich was dissapointing. calzaghes recored would have been looking alot more better right now if he had a win over sven ottke.
I disagree strongly.
I'm sure Frank would have tried to get a fight with Ottke.
He is not on Joe's level at any stretch.
If they somehow coaxed him out of Germany. It would have fast tracked his career a little. But it wouldn't have been a better win than any of these. And you'd have to coax him out of Germany. Because I dunno if Joe can knock out Ottke.
1. Kessler
2. Eubank
3. Lacy
4. Reid
5. Brewer
6. Mitchell
Ottke lost about 6 times in actuality. He was teak tough but very ordinary.
I agree, man.
Good point! Hatton is huge in the UK, so is Calzaghe, but as huge.. I don't think it gets bigger than Hatton. That guy can sell out arenas.
Joe Calzaghe is what got me into boxing.
His fight against Charles Brewer.
I agree he is definetely the favourite of the real British boxing fans.
Ricky Hatton is a very media savvy, funny guy.
I think Joe C, is pretty shy actually.
Also he is Welsh.
Just as he would be a legend if he was American, he'd be more popular if he was English as opposed to Welsh.
Joe HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATES interviews. I can imagine why, being asked the same questions over and over and over again would piss anybody off.
Kinda like an Actor on the promotional curcuit, being asked the same question by a billion different people.
But, its the real stars are the ones that love the interviews. Because those guys use every interview as an oppurtunity to promote themselves and whatever it is there doing.
Hatton is that, Calzaghe isnt. I agree, more of an introvert
Barnsley 0-1 Cardiff City!
That Olyhajebe guy is shit.
Trust him to have the game of his life against us. Well done though. Would be good if Cardiff won
Alas Man U are well on their way to bottling the premiership, I hate how all the pundits talk about them like their beyond that. They'll shit their pants. If we had Mourinho, i'd put my house on Chelsea winning it.
touche, well said. Although id rather have the fan support then the talent, but i guess thats just me
When you can make millions fighting a no-name. Why not?
I'd rather have Joe Calzaghe's ability.
Hatton trumps Calzaghe in fan support and Calzaghe trumps him in talent and ability. At the end of the day only one really matters, and Calzaghe will be the one at the podium accepting his Hall of Fame induction.

all true, but i think hatton is gonna make the hall as well.
It is sad but true. However I agree Hatton has more following from average street folk, less so from real boxing fans, whom I believe know about and are fans of Joe.
Fighting Hopkins or another big yank fighter awhile back would have helped, I believe he wanted a few other US fights but never got them, he's referred to politics here on a few occasions.
It's changing now though since Lacy, Manfredo, and Kessler, plus the personality of the year award, which helped Beckhams reputation. Come April 19th it's gona get another boost. :boxing:

true, but joe is doing fine, and is a much better boxer. no doubt though that hatton has a ton of fans, and a huge draw here. i think joe did fuck himself all these years by not coming over here. his style is very pleasing, and he is a well spoken guy who would have been a huge attraction here in the states.
