IBF #1 welterweight Joshua Clottey (34-2, 21 KOs) scored a fifth round stoppage of Jose Luis Cruz (36-4-2, 29 KOs). Clottey was in command all the way, but Cruz showed no signs of being hurt and was still fighting back when referee Ricky Gonzalez surprisingly waved it off at 2:48 of the fifth.
Seems to me it was a terrible stoppage..
god damn check out dudes face from that left hook though..
The problem is they get accustomed to stopping fights early in MMA...so it might carry over to boxing.
Most of these guys have refereed lots more boxing matches than MMA, which is relatively new. To me it's like the apples/oranges comparison.
The problem is UFC referees also REF boxing...I saw jon shorle ref a MMA fight last saturday...the refs probally were still in the MMA mindset and stop the fight sooner.
I think Boxing needs there own refs, and mma get there own none of this double duty shit.
The referees work for the state athletic commissions. Both boxing and MMA are regulated by them. Since there aren't enough boxing shows to satisfy the refs, they take all the work they can get. I don't see a problem with it.
that was just about as bad as the andy lee v. brian vera stoppage.
it was horrible.
Cruz was taking some good shots but didnt seem unable to defend himself or unable to continue.
they should have let the fight go on for longer.
and what about the versus crew jacking off foreman? they were on his nuts the WHOLE fight.
They think Tye Fields, Clottey, and Foreman are all future all time greats or something...everytime one of those 3 fighters fight on their broadcast they spend the whole fight just kissing up to them.
It was much worse than the Vera-Lee stoppage. Lee was taking some hard shots and he was starting to wilt. Cruz still had steady legs and deserved a chance to fight back. I'm glad Arum's contract with Versus is up. His matchmaking for them was pathetic, especially considering how much they were paying for that crap.
I think Clottey is more marketable coming off of a stoppage than two straight decisions to fighters in a much lower class. considering it was a Top Rank card, I wouldnt be surprised if the ref was told to keep the bout on a short leash, because next time he fights hes coming off of a tko to a guy Shane Mosley couldnt stop and nobody will remember that it was a horrible stoppage.
what the fuck happened.. yo, i thought it was going to be the second fight! fuckin shitt!! what happened doode?
