Right...the Hopkins who fought Jones was green yet somehow no one else managed to beat him for another 12 years. And maybe longer depending on who you ask.
Segundo Mercado (yeah...) dropped Hopkins twice and drew with him after the Roy Jones fight.
Before the Roy Jones fight Hopkins' greatest win came over journeyman Gilbert Baptist who had a 26-14 record.
Hopkins had been active as a pro for 3 years.
Roy Jones on the other hand, while still quite green as a fighter, was already a top prospect having defeated several top middleweights and title contenders. Had a great amateur background as well.
Hopkins made significant improvements after that first Mercado fight, changing his style. I'd say B-Hop was at his best from 1997 to 2001.
Bernard "The Terror" Hopkins' early fighting style 1991.
Hopkins vs Roy Jones 1993.
Hopkins vs Mercado 1994.
Hopkins vs Glen Johnson 1997.
This was one of Hopkins' greatest performances.
Theres a difference between a huge fan and a nuthugger...
FAN: Roy jones is my favorite fighter... I think hes exciting, different, and unique, tons of accomplishments, and i LOVE watching him fight.. he made me a fan of this sport... and I definitely follow his entire career and admire what hes done.
NUTHUGGER: Roy jones is the greatest fucker to ever lace up the gloves. Even at 39, he will beat ANYONE he gets in the ring with. The knockouts were a fluke. Tarver and johnson is garbage. Roy will CRUSH calzaghe and Dawson. And STILL UNBEATABLE.
Catching the difference here?
That's the difference I see between you and robjrr in that regard. I recognise you're a fan but I think rob is a hugger.
On this fight, Roy Jones 22-0 vs Joe Calzaghe 44-0 I think Calzaghe would win a close fight. It was Roys first 12 rounder and Hopkins was no where near his best there.
Uhhh, they are both green.
Remember the original question I proposed? Would Calzaghe beat that Roy Jones? I say yes he would, and I also say that he beats that Hopkins.
My God, you are dense. I am not saying anyone is green, you are. Neither of them were "green" as far as I'm concerned. Younger? Yes...although I don't know how you can even call Hopkins that when he was 28. But green? Please.
And would Calzaghe beat the Jones who fought Hopkins? Fukk no, that same Jones kicked James Toney's ass a year later. What are you, on drugs?
Uhhh, he definately had a hell of a lot better ring control than he did in his fights before Jones. Definately. I'm talking about the Hopkins that fought Dennis Milton and Danny Mitchell. He was a straight up slugger.
You mean WELL before he fought Jones? Well yeah! You are hilarious. He fought Mitchell in what, his 12th fight? And you're comparing that to the 28 year old, 22-1, #1 contender Bernard Hopkins? Please :tapedshut
He changed it after he lost to Jones,
And when did he tell you this?
but he was starting to pick it up around that time. That being said, I'll take Joe Calzaghe over a Hopkins who is just starting to learn his craft that made him great.
Battling his way to the #1 contender slot in the US-centered IBF and fighting for the world title but he's JUST starting to learn his craft? Whatever dude.
The only thing ridiculous is this post. Bernard Hopkins had 23 fights when he fought Roy Jones Jr.. That's EIGHT more fights than 15, and ONE more fight than Jones had.
If you wanna say one was green, so was the other. And green or not, they BOTH were great enough to go unbeaten for years and years. Give it a rest.
Uhhh, they are both green.

Well then perhaps you missed a couple things in those old fights you purchased...like seeing him AGE and compensating the weakening of certain physical gifts with his uncanny ring intelligence. The Hopkins that destroyed Glenn Johnson beats any other version of Hopkins. Now tell me...what style was that?

Well, I'm done talking to you, considering you don't know what I am talking about when I talk about Hopkins switching styles. I was a Hopkins fan when I first started watching boxing, and I picked up as many of his old fights as I possibly could.

Ridiculous. I don't care if Joe Calzaghe isn't that great, he is certainly good enough to beat up a green future elite.
Mayweather after 15 fights gets beat the fuck up by Ike Quartey. It happens, even though Mayweather is a better fighter. He just didn't have the experience.

What do you mean "what fucking world beater did Bernard Hopkins fight during that time?" He fought Roy Jones, d*ck - isn't that the fight we're talking about? And he didn't just lose, he gave him one of the toughest matches in his career. He was damn good THEN. Sh*t, he was the #1 contender while Jones was #2 and they were fighting for a vacant crown.
And I don't know what you're trying to say with this "new counterpuncher style." You mean what old fighters do when they can't do what they did when they were young? Judging from your post, I doubt very much that you saw any Hopkins fight between 1994-1997, when he was an absolute beast in his prime.
Oh and by the way, that period was also dominated by another fighter: Roy Jones Jr. Who, in case you didn't notice, didn't fight like the way he did when he fought Hopkins that night. He improved as well. All fighters, the greats anyway, do that. But their core is what it is - or else they wouldn't be great. Hopkins was as tough an opponent that night (fighting for his FIRST world title) as he was for any other during his prime.

Okay you two... what fucking world beater did Hopkins fight during that time after he before he developed his new counterpuncher style? Trinidad was his first good fighter period after Jones, and he definately had control of the ring in that fight and was using his right hand counter effectively.
Don't give me that bullshit that the slugger, green Hopkins was even close to an elite fighter, or even on his way to becoming an elite fighter if he didn't change his style.
Just like Winky Wright wouldn't have been elite had he not changed to his defensive jab style instead of a slick southpaw.

Joe Calzaghe is better than the version of Roy that Bernard fought. Itty bitty green Roy Jones Jr. would have gotten his ass kicked by the Joe Calzaghe that is fighting April 19th.
ass kicked? for real? i can not agree with that, even a green roy was not gonna get his ass kicked by a 36 yr old calz.
im GLAD roy changed his style up now that hes older... he realizes he cant quite move his head fast enough to get away from the punches all the time.. so hes got the winky style defense... smartest move he could of made... and at this stage of his career, to change ur style at 39... thats admirable.
so you strongly believe the fighter hopkins is now is much better than the one who fought Roy Jones ? he is nowhere near as fast as he was then.
I'll take the Bernard Hopkins who counterpunches and fucks up the rhythm of his opponent anyday over the slugger that he was in his early days.
Like I said, I'll do the same with the defensive jabber Winky Wright instead of his early days when he was a moving slick southpaw.
Those are two fighters that made themselves soooo much better than they were by changing their style into one that only they had.
