As a Philly native I didn't need to do any demographic research, but I did it anyway.
Germantown is one of the more peaceful and affluent neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Bill Cosby is from there as well, as was Sun Ra. White collar workers outnumber blue collar workers by about 9/2. The median income is over $40,000/ year.
Crime rates are some of the lowest in the city.
I didn't grow up in the roughest "hood" either, but even I grew up in a tougher Philly neighborhood than Hopkins did, with higher crime rates and lower median income. So I can't help but laugh when he refers to his tough background: he's a middle class kid! Sure he went to prison, but anyone can do that.
He's built a false image on being "street." But it's not him. Sorry if you thought he would be too "street" for Calzaghe or anyone else, but you have the wrong guy.

man PLEASE.. I GREW UP IN DC and have seen neighborhoods drastically change in the past 10 years..
KIDS man, sheeesh...:nonono:
Germantown is not in DC. It was never gentrified. It was ALWAYS soft.
Bernard is soft. Look at how he fights. He's a soft-ass motherfucker. Coward. He could have beaten Joe if he had the balls to stand and trade. but he does not have the guts.
That's the irony of his PR image . . . . it's all about being "hard," when in fact he's skilled and crafty but soft

well im not gonna mash up dis thread arguing witt u....not everywhere changes the same way
20 years aint dat much
and i dont kno wat time has to do witt anything, since im not talking about time. i juss mentioned their names so people can get an idea of who comes from there.
Listen, depressed suburban kids slit their own wrists. Hopkins is closer to this than he is to any real "street" activity.
Shit my grandma was mugged at the mall, does that mean she is tough now. Does it excuse her every ignorance and suggest that a eurofag could never beat her in a fight?
Facts are facts, he did not have a hard life, except for what hardships he brought upon himself. As a young adult he found a little trouble, as did many of us. That's not growing up hard though
AGREED!!!....i say that all the time...
u could make life hard for urself, but thats ur problem. If problems seem to surround you tho, then thats a diff. story.
There is this neighborhood near mine called Hollis where Run DMC came from and LL Cool J, Al Sharpton, etc. and its a nice ass neighborhood, it aint poor at all and all the "kids" just act violent for no damn reason. I kno alot of them personally and some of the shit they be sayin b so damn ignorant and stupid. A bunch of lil ass gangs with a bunch of pussy ass rowdy "kids" who bring themselves trouble. My neighborhood is sort of like that, but we do violent shit to get money, not just to do it. Me myself i dont do it tho.
You don't come through MY neighborhood without being willing to trade punches. Germantown is another story. Apparently you learn to duck, run, and hold there. :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:
You learn to hit the guy in the side of the ribs that is not visible to the police.

Who is anyone to judge or challenge a man's claim to life's struggles? Only a hateful person would attempt to debunk a positive self marketing strategy in America.
Fuck off with the righteousness.
This thread was just to set some facts straight.
Sure Hopkins has some positive messages. But he also invented some bullshit about his childhood. There's nothing "hateful" about getting the facts right.
Who is anyone to judge or challenge a man's claim to life's struggles? Only a hateful person would attempt to debunk a positive self marketing strategy in America. Especially when self promotion and fight hype is essential on the stage of professional boxing. Exaggerated or not, who gives a shit when this man is able to earn his money while still promoting the rewards of hard work, clean living, and discipline.
What's the worst that can happen...Bernard makes his money and maybe serves as a role model for a truly troubled youth? I guess someone needs to remind him that his marketing campaign should be limited to fur coats, night clubs, tossing cash into crowds, and teaching kids that "if it don't make dollars, then it don't make sense".
Nobody should give shit if some youthful boxing fans are attracted to the "street appeal marketing" of Bernard Hopkins. I enjoy seeing a man make millions, especially when his "street appeal" helps to teach the importance of financial responsibility and inspire troubled boys to become men. I'm more worried about the kids who still believe George Washington wouldn't lie about the cherry tree.
Shut the fuck up KayJay. Why don't you go kill yourself already? This world would be a better place without you.
Isn't that a little dramatic? I mean a lot of people who know me in real life would surely disagree.
If you consistently disagree with the trained, experienced judges, it's because YOU don't know what you're looking at.
And who says they're better then the average fan??? Who says they're superior to a big boxing fan judging the fight from home.
Most of those guys are doctors and lawyers......no better then anybody else.
Some are good and some are bad. Some just have an off night or maybe have an odd angle watching the fight.
Sometimes it's a close fight and none of the judges are right or wrong which ever way they score the fight as long as the fight is close on their scorecard and not some ridiculous 119-108 type decision.
In other words, the judges are nothing special or any better then your hardcore boxing fan watching at home.
Critisizing the judges is not the same as critisizing the fighters themselfs. If you're a couch potato critisizing professsional athetes is one thing but sitting on that couch questioning another obese guys scorecards is another.
Who cares what the judges saw? Judges in boxing are full of shit half the time.
This is the attitude that makes most opinions on these boards pretty worthless.
Punk kids who have only watched boxing on television think they should determine the winners.

Lets stop being so fuckin' dumb shall we and dump this thread.
Bernard Hopkins is a product of his environment. He is a hard man. He is not a ignorant thug but he is a street smart wise guy who has seen some shit.
Anybody who does 4 years in the penitentiary and goes on to become a professional fighters gets props from me. Usually when someone soft makes it after 4 years, they have booty problems and self confidence issues for the rest of their lifes.
Thread closed.
The fight DEPENDS on what the judges saw, REALLY. Bought off? Tell me...WHO in that scenario would have the money to pay off any judges and for what reason?
