Amir Khan backed after radical muslim cleric's attack

Radical preacher Omar Bakri Mohammed, who moved to Lebanon in 2005 to avoid deportation from Britain, also told the Sun newspaper that Khan was a bad role model for young Muslims. Amir Khan is not a good example," Bakri told the newspaper. "He wears shorts with the Union Jack. That is a sin. He should not be wearing the flag because sovereignty is for God. His only allegiance should be to the Prophet Mohammed. "The ideal situation would be to have a Muslim team not registered to any state so he can represent the Islamic community." But the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) backed the 2004 Olympic silver medalist, saying: "These comments are typical of Omar Bakri. He doesn't live in this country and frankly his views are of no concern to British Muslims. Khan is a wonderful role model.") The Commonwealth lightweight champion is a poster boy for Islamic integration and has often spoken about his responsibilites as a British Muslim.

oh bloody hell - you know these kind of accustaion are going to sick with amir all his life and he'll end being in the middle of a tug of war between his ethnicity, religion and his new country's nationality. im a muslim myself and like amir im from the UK, i just cant help but feel that hes doing a bit of brown nosing to try and get the british public on his side. the constant posing alongside the union jack and all that is gettin slightly reptitive in some ways it reminds of what joe louis did in order to try and get a title shot. imo amit shouldn't feel the need do all this promotinal work and he shouldn't make himslef to be more british and make himself seem more integrated into the british way of life than he already is. if i was in his shoes i woudn't bother with all the flags of pakistan or british he just say i am what i am either accept me for it or f**k off. personally i dont hate england or the UK - in fact i love this country and young asains are indebted to it as it has allowed them to practise their religion relatively freely and has allowed them to obtain a very decent education. but this is my own viewpoint and not everyone will agree with it. ________ Iolite Vaporizer
