Best way to pose this question I believe is to ask ourselves if they both fought the same opponent right NOW who would have more American PPV buys.
So lets say Margarito vs Cotto or Margarito vs Hatton which has more PPV buys in America? Or how about Clottey vs Cotto or Clottey vs Hatton which would have more PPV buys in America.
That would be a better and all round question, And looking at it that way i would say Definitely Cotto.
That would make a huge difference, hatton before Mayweather was a Nobody to the american casual fan, but with the whole Mayweather/hatton buildup and actually fight i would say Now hatton but before the fight i would say definitely Cotto.

this thread was meant as PRE Mayweather people. not POST mayweather. Did Hatton REALLY have more fans than Cotto BEFORE Mayweather?

quoted for emphasis.
stupid question. Who has the bigger fan base in the uk? Give a stupid question, get a stupid answer back
It's actually a very good question because Cotto is from Puerto Rico and not from New York. Now please.. go somewhere else with your stupidity.
I would say before the Mayweather fight, Hatton had more fans here than Cotto has now. Since the Mayweather fight and the booing of the national anthem, I'd say Hatton has lost most supporters here.
Cotto is by a mile, Hatton vs Castillo sold 13k tickets 3k of them were Americans the rest were English. Before that the majority were English at Boston and at the fight vs Urango. Cotto has been selling out Madison Square Garden for the last couple of years. The Mayweather fight would of hardly got Hatton some new fans, he got battered and outclassed.
I will never ever get why Hatton went to Boston to fight Collazo!
In a shit arena watched by Mancs anyway.
:nonono:
I don't see the point in going to America if your a big name fighter like Joe or Ricky. Not to fight in a two-bit piece of crap arena. Thousands of miles a way.
I think Joe has done it right personally!
Collazo and Urango was an utter waste of time he could have beat them both at the MEN and got it on HBO, surely.
Castillo was worth travelling for.
I would have to say Cotto has more fans in America, maybe. Pre Mayweather/Hatton, nobody in America outside of hardcore boxing fans knew who Hatton was. Post Mayweather/Hatton, and HBO's 24/7 more people know who Hatton is, but I'm not sure I would call them fans.
More than the fight itself, I would have to say 24/7 had more of an impact on how many people in America became fans of Hatton. He has a great personality, and was the perfect antithesis to Mayweather's over the top brash, cocky attitude.
I'm not sure how many boxing fans realize how important 24/7 was to the build up for last two Mayweather PPV. I was watching a non boxing related geeky podcast called Totally Rad Show, where they discuss comics, movies, games. In one segment they started talking about the best T.V. programing when one of the host brought up HBO's 24/7 as one of the best documentaries/television program on television, and how much they loved watching it. I don't remember the exact details of the conversation, but this goes to show how much of an impact 24/7 has had on non boxing fans.
There are probably more Puerto Ricans in New York then there are in Puerto Rico, so of course Cotto is going to sell good at MSG. Can Cotto pack a building in Las Vegas like Hatton did?
Even people who dont follow boxing that I know know who Hatton is. I dont think any of them could pick Cotto out of a lineup.
I would have to say that's true from what I get in the bars in my area..
That's gonna be his test.
Although, that right there is a guaranteed to sell out because it is a double header packed with big names.
IMO It is more to get Tony recognition in the east so when Cotto v. Margarito comes he has some exposure over there so the fight sells better.
You make the fight on the west after that and you have both coasts tuning in.. that's if Marg wins, I'm sure he will.
I'm talking America though, I know for a fact Hatton has more fans in the U.K. but how many of them actually make it over here or contribute to the U.S. PPV numbers?
Hatton has American fans.
They just discovered him and they like his accent and lovely skin tone. :fing02:
Who is the bigger draw in America and has the biggest fan base in America?
Is it Hatton or Cotto?
I know where you are going with this. You will never justify a Cotto vs. Mayweather fight to a Mayweather fan, as Mayweather fans dual role as Mayweather's accountant also.
didnt really read what others posted but my money is on the cotto fight. hatton is a draw, but his recent performances on HBO werent really all that. his fight with Junior was exciting but he lost, and lost in the devastating fashion.
cotto is fighting in the welterweight division, and this division is hot now. ricky obviously wants to stay at junior welterweight and fight the likes of malignaggi, a good match up but not a must see event. cotto's next opponent is not an inspiring one, but i believe in his next fight the opposition will be more threatening, perhaps cotto vs cintron if kermit beats margarito.
besides to me cotto is a more dynamic fighter than hatton.
cotto's fanbase outside of ny is not that big. He is not a household name. he has a boring personality. He is not in the spotlight at all. Hatton after the floyd fight has alot more fans then cotto. Especially since alot of people were rooting for hatton to beat floyd. I dont think its close hatton by i long shot
