Considering that Leonard and Robinson were arguably the two best P4P fighter of their time and both are All Time Great is Shane worthy of having the Sugar Moniker? Considering he most likely will not become a P4P great and hasn't been atop the P4P pile.
Robinson is almost definately the best P4P fighter of his era and the only fighter than stand infront of Leonard as a threat to his P4P supremacyis Hagler but that is nothing to be ashamed of. Personally I don't think he lives up to the name and fall short but only just.
Ray Robinson gets a free pass for failing to claim the Light Heavyweight crown?
Pernell Whitaker gets a pass for getting beat down by Felix Trinidad.
Roberto Duran gets a pass for losing to Tommy Hearns
Roberto Duran gets a pass for losing to Marvin Hagler
Roberto Duran gets a pass for losing to Wilfred Benitez
Roberto Duran even gets a pass for losing to fucking Kirkland Laing
Why? Because he was the small superstar moving up in weight to accomplish the impossible.
I mean its not like Vernon Forrest fought his fight before Mosley above the 147lb Welterweight limit or anything. Wait, yes he did.
Shame on Shane Mosley. That terrible 135lb fighter, how dare he lose to an INCREDIBLE natural 160lb fighter fighter in Winky Wright and an amazing natural 154lb (He might even be a natural 160lb) fighter after moving up in weight to fight the best! We should punish him, don't you think Dweins?
Get real, Mosley lost once after moving up 3 weights two a Forrest who was 4-5 divisions larger than Shane, and once after moving up 4 weights to Winky Wright who was 5-6 divisions larger than him
Here's the difference... All those fights have legitimate excuses other than the weight difference issue.
Robinson was up on all the scorecards before he collapsed due to the heat.
Pernell Whitaker's nose was white as fuck and was clearly out of his prime.
Duran had moved up 25 pounds before he really started to lose. Mosley only moved up half that and then started getting beat.
But, are you really making the argument that Mosley is on par with Robinson and Leonard? Because that is the argument that I made in the first post I made in this thread. I didn't try to say that Mosley sucks, but that is what you are making my posts out to say.
Ah but everyone know Ray Robinson passed out in that fight, everyone who has seen it at least. Duran moved up from lightweight and had success at middleweight and held Hagler to a close decision. That is amazing. Mosely is a great 135lb fighter. That Whitaker fight was the only fight Whitaker lost convincingly.
He just wasn't as successfull moving up in weight as the other sugars were
Passing out is the same as getting knocked out cold. He could not continue the fight. It doesn't matter if it was because he got knocked out cold or because he expended to much energy and overheated.
And that goes back to my original point. You cannot fault Shane Mosley for not having the frame to succeed at the higher weights.

So you are prepared to give Mosley a free pass for throwing his career away by fighting at the higher weights? That seems kind of crazy to me.
What if someone has a great career, and then they decide to move up 3 weight classes? Are they on a freeroll for the rest of their career? They get enormous amounts of credit for beating anyone they fight up there, and a nothing more then a neutral mark on his resume for losing? Fighters should be held accountable for the decisions they make regarding what weight they fight at.

The Sugars of old were never out sized to the extent that Mosley was.
He has only lost at 147 and 154 to HUGE fighters in Vernon Forrest and Winky Wright.
The 5'9 (more realistically 5'8) Mosley had a 4 inch hight disadvantage to Forrest, and a 3'1/2 inch disadvantage to Wright.
Ray Leonard only had a 2 inch disadvantage to Hearns, and a height advantage over Hagler.
Criticizing a VERY small fighter campaigning at WW for losing to two incredibly talented fighters that were MUCH bigger than him is borderline ignorant.
That would be like criticizing Ricardo Lopez if he got knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez.
The fact is, not only did Shane Mosley move up in weight beyond where he was a viable fighter, he did it against that ABSOLUTE BEST opposition there was.
Not to mention at his best weight, he was nearly invincible. He had the fastest hands this side of Meldrick Taylor, and he had gobs and gobs of power.
He threw combinations with ungodly fluidity, and precision and knocked people OUT.
How anyone can criticize or demean the man is beyond me. SUGAR Shane Mosley is the type of fighter every fighter should aspire to be.

I really don't think so...
He lost all of his big fights pretty much, except for Oscar I. He got a decision that is highly questionable in their rematch. After that he was able to beat a washed up Fernando Vargas twice. But seriously, he dropped a pair to Forrest, dropped a pair to Wright, and lost to Cotto. The real kicker in all of that is the first match with both Forrest and Wright was pretty one-sided. The Sugars of old didn't really get blown out by anyone.
He deserves it more than Sugar Ray Seales though. :)

Go watch a video of Sugar Ray Robinson then go watch a video of Sugar Shane Mosley back to back.
Leonard and Robinson had the advantage of height that enabled them to move up in weight and succeed. Mosley did the best he could with his limited size.
Shane was named "Sugar" because his fighting style resembles Robinson's and Leonard's with the fast combinations he throws.
Sugar Shane Mosley
Sugar Ray Robinson
I see where you're coming from but I'm saying now that his career is nearing it's end do you think that he was worthy of being this generations "Sugar" because the two Sugars of the past have ruled the P4P ranking Shane had a breif stint.
I mean you had other Sugar who were no where near that level like Sugar Ramos and Sugar Ray Seales.
sugar shane is seriously talented although not as talented as the other two sugars but not far off in his prime he was probably the best in the ww division.
1k calzghe ud over hopkins.

Sugar Shane Mosley
Sugar Ray Robinson
Ok but I think he has had much less success that Leonard and Robinson and is worse than both of them, Leonard and Robinson BEAT everyone that needed to be fought, Leonard beat: Hagler (i thought he lost but it was close), Hearns, Duran, Benitez,
Robinson Beat: Kid Gavilan, Carl Olson, Lamotta, Randy Turpin, Rocky Graziano, Gene Fullmer, Basilo.
Sugar Shane has fought the best but hasn't always won which is what Leonard and Robinson did Robinson only started losing the majority of his losses at the age of 39.

"Sugar" is a moniker conferred based upon a particular style (I believe in all three cases in their amateur days, and thus preemptively) - fast hands and combinations - rather than having anything to do with particular career success. That said, while Mosley has not had the success and is probably not on the same level as the previous two Sugars in some respects, he has fought everyone even when the risk did not equal the rewards - providing a good example of a throwback fighter more concerned about making high-level fights than maintaining his record.
Yeah I do. Accomplishments aside, when he was at his best he could pop off those beautiful combos just like Robinson and Leanord. He can throw the powerful left hook from the hip like SRR.

Shane is one of the best fighters over the last ten years. He's small but I think that he beats every other ww out there right now including Mayweather.
His mistake was fighting Cotto. Along with JC, the baddest boy in boxing today...
