6th?????? only the 6th greatest sports character of all time?????
Who was possibly better then him, u ask???
Don King was 5 somehow, Mcenroe was 4 (ahead of Ali is a little rediculous but he is cearly one of the great characters), Tyson was 3, Bob Knight was 2 (another great character but ahead of Tyson and Ali? cmon), and #1 was DENNIS RODMAN!!!! Rodman was a fuckin idiot, nobody enjoyed his antics and nobody fuckin liked him!
I mean c'mon now. lol. ALi is the greatest showman is sports history hands down, and because he was such a showman he was considered THE most famous man alive at his peak.
Not 1 other guy on that list was ever considered the most famous person in AMERICA, let alone the world...
He still should have supported his country - other men went and fought, regardless of what they thought about it. It wasn't just Vietnam, Ali had no loyalty to or love for America, a country which had been very good to him. No other heavyweight champion was given so much media attention as Ali.
And he was a loudmouthed braggart who had no respect for his opponents. He ridiculed Frazier, not in a friendly joking way, but in a cruel and sarcastic manner. Smokin' Joe deserved better than that.
yes, people should follow blindly for their country even if they know its for the wrong reasons and it costs them their lives :ugh:, sorry if i dont have the same amount of nationalism as you, but if i know if they are doing something incredibly wrong i will not follow because its retarded, if they had a reason to then it would make sense, but fighting to stop commies in another country is stupid
Ali's loudmouth antics is what got him so popular, if it werent for his mouth i doubt he would be widely known as he is now
That was also true about Joe Louis. he opened alot of doors. I guess people like us don't understand his times, if he talked like Ali did on those times he would probably be shot. As a fighter and skill apart, acomplishmentwise Louis was the man, he cleaned the division for like 15+ years! And he didn't get to choose his opponents for defenses, they would make him fight the guy they thought had the best chance to beat him EVERYTIME. No Gomez, 43 year olds (unless they were a mustache and were lumberjackers ) but the quality of his competition nevertheless was poor. People didn't train properly, fighters smoked, that kind of thing.
Louis? Louis never said a word because he was trying to be respectful to white america after what Jack Johnson had done.
He was hardly even a human being during his fighting days
That was not respect, it was fear and praise. Yet the white man fucked him to misery, sad story but anyway, back to topic, i would definitely say Ali too. The man started the trash talk so used in boxing today. He was the very first. He also used technics never used before in the HW division and is often allowed on the p4p rankings because he was so different.
that is so true
and that uncle tom bullshit ali said was fuck up
Yeah, but Louis criticized Ali for talking so much. That's why Ali said that, I'm sure it's a different story now.
If it wasn't for Louis white folks would probably have never gave black folks another shot at boxing for another 30+ years!
Louis did more for black pride then Ali.
He was the first black athlete to achieve the status he did.
Then Ali goes and calls him an Uncle Tom? Ali should have been thankful because if it wasn't for Joe he might have never got the shot to be Heavyweight champ.
After all he had done for black pride and America Ali goes and disrespects him?
Again.. F* ALI!

Yes, Joe Louis should be ranked higher than Muhammed Ali.
He was a better fighter and a better man too. Joe fought in WW II, but Ali refused to fight for his country when the time came.
WWII and vietnam are 2 completely different wars, if your reasoning behind louis being that i would recheck your history and see how senseless vietnam was

I agreed with pretty much everything you're saying if that was how they ranked it. Rodman and Knight? Trashy.

Watch the Joe Louis documentary on HBO please..
yea but that doesnt make him a great "character"
You have to be controversial or outspoken to be a character.
Was Louis a better person then Ali? Most definetly IMO, but that doesnt make him a greater character
Oh OK.. I see what you mean... neva mind.. lol
Ok he wasn't but doesn't representing the whole country of the United States during WWII against someone from Germany count for something? You can't say Ali did something as segnificant as that! You could probably say protesting the vietnam war but it still doesn't compare to Louis knocking Schmeling out.
