A question for those that somehow believe Gomez will beat Cotto... what will be that winning gameplan or strategy?
I really tried to come out with a picture of Gomez beating Cotto, and I don't see it. There is no way Gomez will win. Cotto is not the type of boxer that gets distracted easily. A focused boxer like Cotto will break Gomez. Too bad I don't find a moron in PR willing to bet $500 or even $50 agaisnt Cotto.
(BTW, I am willing to put up 10Ks for any Gomez fan out there... just sig it.)
Asian Sensation had it right, there's no way you tell Gomez to come out bombing with Cotto, that's the stupidest thing he could possibly do.
I'm going to school you youngster's on what's the only thing he can do to win.
#1 - He has to be in the best shape of his life, period. He will need this because even though Gomez isn't the most agile and quick guy, he will need to stick and move constantly playing the counter puncher for 12 full rounds.
#2 - Utilize the jab all night long. Throw it out there to the point that Cotto is just waiting for it. Cotto isn't a great boxer and is suceptible to the straight right hand, use the jab to set the right hand up while moving, moving, moving.
#3 - Finally, don't get caught up in this macho bullshit with Cotto. Even though Gomez will be the bigger man, don't let that lure you into a brawl with Cotto, that's what he wants. Cotto is still the bigger puncher and getting in tight with him is his fight. Neither Mosley nor Judah boxed him for 12 rounds, when they did they were winning those exchanges.
This is the only chance Gomez has but I think Cotto wins and wins easily. If Gomez were to win, it would be on the level of Mike Tyson vs Buster Douglas IMO, monumental upset.
Um, Asian Sensation said just the opposite..

I agree with your points except for point 2. I think he should mix it up more, if he only uses the jab, Cotto could time him with his overhand right, Gomez should mix in some right hand leads and left hook leads and move right after. Right hand leads more than left hook leads though.

he's not going to do that he don't know how.
Think about that though, how effective do you think Gomez can be sticking and moving? He's not exactly Ray Robinson with the way he moves in there.
The poster who said Gomez has to come out bombing has the right idea. I think he needs to get Cotto in trouble early and try to end things then. The fight gets worse for Gomez the longer it goes.

If he uses his constant jab like he did against Gatti then he would have a decent chance, the only problem is that I don't think his chin will hold up against those Cotto Bombs.
:ugh:
Gomez's chin isn't the issue, it's how well he can take Cotto's body shots. His chin has been pretty throughly tested and is very good.

I know, it probably won't be too effective, especially going down the stretch but through all the media interviews, he's been saying how he's a better boxer than Cotto a better counterpuncher than Cotto, he hasn't said anything about putting Cotto under pressure, that's why I think his strategy will be to outbox Cotto. It doesn't mean I think it's the most effective strategy.
Edit: Coming out and bombing away at Cotto may not be his best strategy either because he's not a powerful puncher, I think it'd play right into Cotto's hands if he came out like that.
I think he's going to be sticking and moving, he'll try to outbox Cotto by moving around the ring and throwing punches and move or clinch whenever Cotto gets close.

Miguel Cotto is going to make Alfonso Gomez look very bad. I doubt Gomez wins one round.
Gomez is capable of brawling for a few rounds. He assimilates hard hits well. He will get one of the first 3 rounds if he doesn't get KTFO first. If the fight goes to rounds 4-5 or even later, Gomez will not be scoring much points while shelling his way to block body shots. Cotto by KO.

I think initially Gomez should come out and see if how well he can counter Cotto's jab with an overhand right. If he is able to do this well then Gomez should box Cotto with jabs and counter right hands......Mosley landed those overhand rights nicely but they weren't over Cotto's jab they were mostly in the exchanges.
If Gomez can't counter with the right he would have to try and make it a war similar to Torres/Cotto. Otherwise Gomez will be worn down by the power jab, body blows and low blows (threw that in for you addison ).
