be for the welterweight title Floyd holds? It's believed that they will meet at a catchweight of 150 presumably because Oscar can't make that weight anymore. However, in the next breath, they talk of his farewell fight being against Pacquiao, which would have to be below 150.
So here's why I think it should be for the welterweight titles....
(1) What's three pounds for DLH? He's a world class athlete. He isn't some unprofessional slob like Jose Luis Castillo.
(2) It adds to the promotion of the fight. I'm not going to even look it up, but Oscar fighting and possibly winning the welterweight title would make him a three-time champ at that weight class, which has to be close to a record.
(3) It's another defense for Mayweather. Adds to his legacy.
(4) It helps sell the potential Pacquiao/DLH fight even more. Why? Well, if Manny wins this weekend, he wins the junior lightweight title. Assuming he moves up and beats David Diaz (highly plausible and likely), he'll have won a lightweight title. A move up to welterweight against DLH, who holds the welterweight title? That's historic. Once again, I don't have to look it up, but I think it's safe to say that there's never been a fighter who won three titles in three different weight classes in the same year.
Now, I know it's not likely for Oscar to beat Floyd, but let's just assume. Why can't they make the fight at 147? I can't find any negatives for any party involved.
Is he not? How many times is he going to make a mockery of the sport?
Yes, he had THE FIGHT with Corrales, but he keeps disrespecting the sport, his opponents, promoters, and fans by showing up way overweight.
It's not about titles. Floyd Mayweather is the linear and Ring Magazine Welterweight champion. They can strip him of the WBC but he still is the champ.
I think the best scenario for Boxing is that they strip mayweather of his title for not defending it and give it to Margarito.
Give it to a guy whos last fight was a loss to another guy who just got outclassed? ya that makes sense.
