i don't see too many fighters today really lasting 15 rounds without looking really sluggish, but there are fighters with amazing stamina that could do like you already know, mayweather jr is the obvious choice, and guys like hopkins and maybe calzaghe and a few others would do great in 15 rounds.
From a fans perspective I don't want 15 rounds. Its like the old saying you can shave a sheep many times but you can skin him only once. We might have great individual fights but great fights and rematchs would probably ruin many of these same fighters.
Think of the beatings that Lacey, Abraham, Mosley (first Forrest fight), Baldomir, Malignagi...etc would've taken in those next few rounds. Would've probably ruined them and robbed us of there exciting fights that took place after those fights.
Fair post with good insight.
But it's really a non-issue. The corner have this white little thing called towel.
They can throw it in to protect their fighter before we see those severe beatings...

I'm basically indifferent to this.
I haven't seen any statistical data showing 12 rounds is really safer than 15 rounds.
As for tragic situations like Mancini-Kim, well, how do we really know that it really would've helped if it were 12 rounds? If it were 12 rounds, then the guys might've fought at an even faster pace in the last 3 rounds or so, knowing there was less rounds left in the fight, and Kim might have died then. Or let's say it goes the full 12 and Kim later on lapses into a coma and dies after the decision is read.
Kid Akeem Anifowoshe looked OK after 12 rounds, better off than Robert Quiroga, then after the decision was announced he collapsed and was fighting for his life shortly afterwards, and his death was most likely caused in no small part due to this fight.
The weigh-in procedures need to be fixed before the 12 vs. 15 round thing does.
He was taking alot of shots as well. I dont see any need for either of them to take 3 more rounds worth of head shots (although there is no way Marquez would have seen the 15th round). I dont see what the benefit is of a 15 round fight.
The benefit would be precisely as you point out; the stronger, better man will have time to press his advantages as the opponent gets sloppier.
We would find back to those marvel's we so much appreciate;
Marciano, Ali, Louis etc.
Those who use 5 rounds to measure, 5 rounds to pressure and then 5 rounds to exploit what they figured out in the first 5...
I got really excited when I pictured Hopkins in a 15 round fight against Taylor, Winky, Joppy etc etc.
Do I have to just look at Marquez or can I look at Vasquez?

Fair enough.
But then again, if the break was 90 seconds instead of 60, wouldn't that make it easier to rehydrate and avoid getting so tired and easier to avoid taking a beating?
How about 15 round fights with 90 second breaks?
That sounds good to me. Definately.
Im talking about Kim, I never wanna see that again. I care more about the fighters health than my entertainment.

No way. Fighters are dead tired after 8 or 9 rounds. Look at Marquez tonight as a perfect example. Longer fights mean more punishment, which leads to worse head injuries.

Yes, yes, yes that situation has alot of stigma.
Good thing it was an EXCEPTION.

Benny Paret was killed by his calendar dates and successive beatings.

Nice, now this is how you do it folks. ^ He absorbed everything and laid it all out masterfully. Beautiful.
ya lets see more fighters killed like kim.:nonono: :nonono: :nonono:
When I first opened the thread, I was against it.
But then came some good points from all sides, and I realized that just because I'm lazy and content with less rounds, something hit me;
15 rounds favours the intelligent boxers, and to a degree tough sluggers.
Hopkins would have been considered one of the greatest of all time if he were fighting 15 rounders.
Today, to answer Addison's notion that we don't know who's the best championship rounds-fighter, I would put my money on B-Hop.
He kills people in the last few rounds.
Taylor would be a non-issue if the fights were 15 rounders.
All those chess-like fighters; Lewis, Klitschko, Hopkins, Juan Manuel Marquez etc would probably be more dominant as they would have the time needed to execute the things they created openings for in the first 10-11 rounds.
Addison also makes a brilliant point when he says fighters today doesn't fight nearly as often as they used to back in the day.
The hydration question is a legitimate issue though.
There is no way any person can consume as much water as he is sweating, so the dehydration will be more severe over a 15-rounder.
However, it has been said that many punches to the head equals more damage than a knockout punch, so any safety-issues will in effect be rendered insignificant when we take into consideration that the fighters are now using bigger, more padded gloves- which equals more damage sustained before a knockout.
Excellent thread- good discussion.

And some of those outcomes would have been comas and death.
We don't need them.
See Ray Mancini-Deuk-Koo Kim.
I agree, I dont wanna see any fighters get killed like that.
I dont want to see a 15 round DLH vs Mayweather or Wlad vs Sultan
and its would be too brutal for fights like tonights.
Yeah, people forget that the only thing worse than a boring 12 round fight is a boring 15 round fight. Not only it lasts longer, but it is fought at an even slower pace.
