The way politic of it is shaped, in how it's debated and viewed.
Ali's career as a public figure
Rocky (1977)
I'm not saying the movie Rocky in any way invented all the qualities that make people love fighters like the one Stallone represented in that film but it was able to draw brilliantly from I guess I'll call here the common man's understanding and idea of what the ultimate heroic boxer is onto film. I would say that film is perhaps more important now than it was on debut in 1977 because it seems people that are very new to boxing have forgotten or are benign to some of the things Rocky Balboa as a character represents to most of us. The film is an extremely positive influence and the interesting thing is, is that Balboa is in some ways antithetical of Ali in his role as a public figure is concerned.
Really it's just a fairly good film but in current media culture, sports included, it's such a gem. It's great that the film was able to reflect our views of what a great sportsman is. People wouldn't love and relate to it so much if that wasn't the case.
No, Stallone himself has said that he made the script to the Rocky movie a few days after seeing the Wepner - Ali fight.

Wepner has sued Stallone before, trying to get paid off for him being the inspiration or something. I don't know how that finally turned out.
I should have framed this differently than comparing a film to Ali's career but I just wanted highlight the different politic that Ali could be associated with that is more in line with contemporary media culture compared to the politic the film reflected.

Alot of people say that movie has some relation to the bout betwee Wepner and Ali. I dont really see that. I had a really really good reason as to why but I cant remember what it was.
I'd say Ali, because he was real. However I'm more intruiged by someone who has Reagan in his avatar and Vote for Obama in his sig. :D
It's actually not that wierd. Obama is strongly considering having who was Reagan's secretary of the Navy as his VP. Jim Webb

Ali by a landslide
More recently, Mike Tyson
Before Ali, Jack Dempsey (The Babe Ruth of Boxing) setting record crowd attendances, Louis beating Schmelling, Marciano's undefeated record, etc.
Is there a trend here? The heavies have always dictated the popularity of boxing in general. Now that the aforementioned division is in shambles, you hear all of this talk about boxing being a dying sport. Unfortunately, the casual boxing fan tends to forget about the lower weight classes. Vlad's latest snoozefest didn't help the division one bit either.

"People don't realize what they had till it's gone. Like President Kennedy - nobody like him. Like The Beatles, there will never be anything like them. Like my man, Elvis Presley - I was the Elvis of boxing.''
