Did anyone see the HBO documentary on Joe Louis? I found it really interesting but I didn't feel bad for his tax problems like they tried to make me feel. He had lavish spending habits like someone else we know, .....Lifestyle, ...Flashy. What did you guys think?
During those times your right that's what was expected.
IMO it should also be expected now. Nothing much has changed except technology. Shit look how they did Pat Tillman who was killed by friendly fire and all the other injured veterans. I have seen veterans protesting in front of the White House and the Department of Veterans Affairs and the shit ain't pretty with how they look or are being treated. So as of back then, today and the future I wouldn't expect anything different. Militaries are not set up to fight for righteous causes. They exsist for protection and to make capitalistic gains for said country.
Your right Joe's decisions weren't the best, but the government even after he was done boxing was taking 90% of his checks and they even took his children's trust funds. What he represented for America during his time as champ, he should have at least got treated better by the government that he served and helped.
Taking the kids Trust fund...was WRONG.. they shouldve never done that...
U can only feel bad to an extent
He had no common sense as far as spending money
Didnt it say he took home a purse of 400,000 and came home with nothing
Ignorance of spending to much money is no excuse...
I respect him very MUCH... but how bad can you feel about his money problems...

I don't think the government really screwed him as much as his managment did. Some people just aren't good at the business side of things and leave it up to thier management. He did that and assumed his taxes were being paid. His management couldn't care less and that's how he got into trouble. Everybody knows not to fuck with the IRS because they are rutheless.
Good point but even after his boxing career when he was doing jobs just to keep himself afloat the IRS was taking 90% of his income.

Good point you can blame his management as much as the government if not more.

Yeah he did spend lavishly, but what he did for America and what he represented for the people of America he deserved better. It was a good example of the times, a black man could do all the right things for his country and get screwed over. The one part that really got me was when they mentioned Coca-Cola made Max Schmelling a millionaire, despite his ties to the Nazi party and Joe Louis didn't get anything yet he represented what America was all about during his time.
Very good documentary. Damned shame what happened to him, helping his country the way he did only to get screwed over by the government.
Yep, just look at the vet's from Vietnam and Iraq. The U.S. needs to learn how to look after the people who help them wage their illegal wars.
