Better opponent, Alfonso Gomez or Josh Clottey?

Lets take an in depth look. Ive been home sick all week so i have lots of time. Alfonso Gomez is 18-3 (8 KOs). His only losses are to Ishe Smith, Jesse Feliciano, and Peter Manfredo. He only fought a four rounder against Smith in what was just his 2nd pro fight and he was deducted a point. Its very hard to win a 4 rounder when you are deducted a point. It would have been a draw or a Gomez win had the point not been deducted. Then he lost to Feliciano, whom he also beat and had a draw with. The same Feliciano who gave Kermit Cintron hell in his last fight. As far as the Manfredo loss, Gomez went toe to toe with a Super Middleweight and went 1-1 against him. Gomez has recently picked up some good wins against Arturo Gatti and Be Tackie. I dont know about you guys, but I was shocked when he did that to Gatti. I know Gatti was over the hill, but I just thought well here is an easy win for Gatti before he leaves the sport. Then he destroyed Gatti in impressive fashion. I think Gomez is a better fighter than people give him credit for. Joshua Clottey is 33-2 (19 KOs). His only 2 losses were against Margarito and Carlos Baldomir. Against Margarito he was doing very well until he injured his hand and couldnt fight effectively anymore. Against Baldomir we was doing very well also but was DQd for fighting with his head. Clottey had a very good win over Diedo Corrales, but Chico was jumping up 2 weight classes and coming off back to back losses. I pretty much knew the outcome of that fight before it happened. Since then Clottey has won two lackluster fights against Flores and Alvarez. I would say as far as their resumes go, they are about even, probably a slight edge for Clottey. You could argue an edge for either fighter I guess. While Clottey has been winning lackluster fights, Gomez has been winning exciting fights. Gomez has a much larger fan base than does Clottey. Gomez is the bigger name. I think that Alfonso Gomez is a decent opponent for Miguel Cotto. Especially to set up a possible Margarito bout. Gomez has a pretty big name, and the Puerto Rican-Mexican rivalry will already start before Cotto-Margarito. I just feel people would settle for a Cotto-Clottey fight, but bash Cotto for fighting Gomez. I think Gomez is a better fight to take at the moment than would be a Clottey fight. I consider Gomez and Clottey about even based on their accomplishments, and Gomez is the bigger name, and probably the easier fight, im not going to lie.

He earned the shot, lets be honest man, cotto is taking a easier fight, he needs a bit of a break. i can understand, but fight clottey man.. clottey is dangerous.. dont compare clottey to gomez.. clottey was fighting decent contenders man. I was talking about his early career, why he has so many wins. So get your facts straight bro man bro. What are Clottey's accomplishments? He hasnt done anything. Neither has Gomez. They are about equal in accomplishments, that why i made this thread. Why fight Clottey now? It doesnt make sense either. Clottey didnt earn his shot at Cotto. Hes Cintron's mandatory idiot, not Cotto's. Cottos mandatory is a bum. I would prefer Cotto-Gomez. I think Cotto-Gomez will be more exciting than Cotto-Clottey. I think Cotto-Gomez is a better set up for a possible Cotto-Margarito fight.

clottey is better imo he has a very good defense but gomez has been fighting middleweights for the majority of his career.if hopkins would fight manfredo no one would complain that would be easy ass whupping. by the way b-hop on his 3rd straight top ten pound 4 pound fighter

Gomez gets Cotto more exposure which Floyd and his groupies keeping claiming is the reason Cotto isnt getting a shot at Floyd, he just doesnt bring in the PPV #'s. Cintron, Quintana, Clottey...hardly anyone from the General public really knows who they are. Yeah they've come out on HBO but so has Gomez and Gomez made quite an impression retiring an old heroe not to mention that Gomez also has had exposure through ESPN. I feel that Gomez is gonna get smashed by Cotto. IF the fight was with Clottey, I think Clottey makes it a lil interesting at the beginning but would def lose by Ko or a majority decision. Clottey is the better fight for Cotto, but Gomez is much more of an attraction and sets up his next fight with Margarito.. BTW is Cotto's belt on the line when he takes on Gomez? that why i wish they have him fight margarito already stop with the b.s.ing

I was comparing them to the guys Clottey fought early in his career. There is no comparison what-so-ever. Look up the guys Clottey was fighting. Clottey did beat the great Abbas De Souza 0-1 (0 KOS) from some weird African country i never heard of tho. And i cant forget his win over the equally great Karl Taylor who sported a flashy record of 14-29-3. Anyone can build a good record against bums liek the guys Clottey fought. Thats what i was saying. Gomez was matched tougher. And the Manfredo fight, you dont find it somewhat impressive he went toe to toe with a supermiddleweight? Guys get shots at titles all the time that dont deserve them. This is nothing new. Cotto deserves a shot at Mayweather, not De La Hoya. Look at the guys people defend their titles against. Its just teh way boxing is. I agree that Gomez isn't a cake walk like some are thinking, but I think Clottey would be the better opponent for Cotto. If the two were to fight I would pick Clottey over Gomez in a close fight where Gomez would apply the pressure, but Clottey would land the more effective and clean punches.

clottey style is similar to winky. claim to fame is winning more than 20 damn fights? two of the lost were not right. and i'm not made at cotto for fight gomez, i think he needs a easier fight.. but the bad thing is i think anybody has a chance against cotto, its just can you finish him off once he's hurt Look at Clotteys fights until his fight with Richard Gutirrez (a fight I thought Clottey lost). Look at the guys he won against. Having more than 20 wins against them guys is a claim to fame? He was fighting absolute bums. While Gomez was fighting guys like Feliciano, Smith, and Manfredo. What a stupid statement you made, Seriously that the best you could do? Look up Clottey's oppnents. Im sure many fighters could have over 20 wins against that comp.

The Contender didn't make Gomez famous that is bullshit. Fuck the Gomez fight is what it is and that is a keep busy fight. No need to try and hype this fight. I don't like this fight or the PBF rematch fight. Both are wastes of time. I agree with you on Clottey getting tired but Clottey is better than Gomez easily.
