I'm just curious what you guys think, after Pavlik-Taylor II about Kelly defending the title like Jermain did. Taylor fought several smaller, blown up junior middleweights and, while you may not want Pavlik to do the same, if he did, are there any you'd pick to beat him? A Wright, a Spinks, a Forrest, etc? I'm just throwing out names. Is there anyone who could move up in weight to actually give Pavlik a run for his money- or are his only threats natural middleweights and guys moving down...?
Spinks wouldn't get hit by Pavlik he's just too slow. But he wouldn't really be in there long enough to land meaningful punches. Look how he made Taylor look who is 3-4 times faster than Kelly.
I wanna see Pavlik vs. Calzaghe. I see everyone picking Cal but I'd favor Kelly.
Spinks would be tricky and a bad matchup for Pavlik, but Judah knocked this guy out. There's no way he could withstand hundreds of even partially landed blows from Kelly
I guess that's the trick, right? Finding a little man strong enough to handle Pavlik's punches but who might just be able to not get hit with as many through defense/ or effectively out box him.

Really? You think Spinks has a better shot than Winky? Does his chin worry you at all? These little guys are fighting an uphill battle, after all..
I just see Pavlik as being pretty slow. Like another poster said his foot speed alone would cause Pavlik alot of trouble, not allowing him to get set, and he is certainly fast enough to land on Pavlik.
That said Pavlik still wins this fight on workrate if he doesn't knock him out first. It's kind of unfeasible that Pavlik loses to a little un' he utilises his size and strength advantages very well. A la Miranda, who was obviously bursting out of the seams at middle anyway.
I don't think Wright standing infront of Pavlik would be a good idea at this point in his life. He'd get outworked at the very least if not he'd get bombed out.
I like Spinks more than Wright at this point.

Huh, interesting. That's two people that would give Winky a shot at beating Pavlik. As far as little men go, he's had moderate luck fighting bigger guys; even in his draw to Taylor and loss to Hopkins, it didn't seem like he was getting thrown around even being a smaller man moving up.
Maybe Winky could have a shot..?
Pavlik can be beat. You just have to kind of meet him on the inside. You can't stay on the outside because then he's at his best when getting full extension on his shots. One thing that is impoartant to note is that he doesn't have one shot power it takes it's toll on you. You can surive a couple of big punches from him.
This is why I think Winky could possibly beat Pavlik. Becuase Wright never fights going backwards. He's right in your chest the whole night and can take a punch. Wink is good at getting off close and accurate punches. And wouldn't allow Pavlik to get off major long range shots.
well i would say spinks has a chance to impress judges.....kelly is slow of feet...taylor was only circling just enough to get out of the way and yet kelly had major problems to keep up with him...of course spinks taps shouldnt even be allowed to count as scoring punches......
winky has a chance to step inside of kelly's 1-2 and counter with a jab to kelly's high placed chin....but he's old now so he cant move on his feet quickly as he used to do it..so even if he lands the clean punches inside of kelly's 1-2 he may not be able to get out of the way completely opening up the chances for kelly to hit winks arms and look flashy....
thats the only 2 little men i give hope to beat pavlik...
u got no proof.
pavlik would get taxed.
apart from the huge gulf in size?
Make no mistake, size matters.
A great little one loses to a good big one, and Pavlik is pretty good. Floyd can scarcely afford to get hit with anything such is the size disparity.
Most people are going to point out that they think Kelly would just bully Floyd and steam roll him with his sheer size advantage
basically.
The reason I bring up the little man syndrome is because, if Mayweather was a natural middleweight- even a feather fisted one- I think everyone here would pick him to beat Pavlik. He's not, though. He's a small guy. Most people are going to point out that they think Kelly would just bully Floyd and steam roll him with his sheer size advantage. So, what smaller men can overcome the difference in size, and yet maintain the trademark speed and work rate of a lower weight class in hopes of beating Pavlik...?
Correct me if you disagree but it seems to me the key to beating Pavlik seems to fall into two categories:
1.) Speed - You need to be able to get to Pavlik before he gets to you. A sharp, fast jab is going to give him problems; Taylor was smacking him with it the first few rounds. If you're faster than Pavlik you have half the problem solved.
2.) Activity- Taylor was rather accurate but it seems that, if Pavlik steps forward and throws 70 punches a round, if you can't hurt him you need to at least match his work rate.
This might seem pretty obvious but it's not always the case that a fast, busy fighter can win; what this indicates is that people acknowledge Pavlik is not the fastest, so speed is a slight weakness, and that his main key to victory is just the pressure he applies. Not his boxing skills them self, or his impenetrable defense, not the ability to counter punch or manuver. Just his work rate.
Sorry bout the Marg comment haha.
I really think anyone who fights Pavlik in the future whether smaller or bigger, seriouslly need to watch what Taylor has done in the first two fights. Pavlik is not indestructable, clean powerful combo's can hurt him, or at least wobble his legs. Escpecially for a smaller guy, speed, quickness, and conditioning will have to be key. Easier said then done of coarse & because of this I don't see anyone out there right now moving up to beat him.
in order for a little guy to do well against kelly they are going to have to have him fight inside! this is hard to do since he usually stays on the outside, and pops the jab. getting in will mean eating alot of jabs, and str8 rights. if they can box well inside and can get in and out effectively b4 getting hurt than sure they have a decent chance. he punches so much, and never lets up even when getting hit i think it would be very hard to do for an entire fight. without getting koed, or hurt badly!
Maybe I should have gone the route of some people and made a thread that got people heated like, "Spinks would KO Pavlik!" Or some garbage. At least I would've got people talking. Maybe I'll try that someday.
Little men could do ok with Pavlik. And Kelly has chin and power at 160, two things Taylor lacks and which forced him to fight smaller men; so he has no motivation to fight welterweights like Taylor did
I have no doubts that any smaller man fighting Pavlik would be in the proverbial little man vs. larger man position of needing to use movement and slick boxing skills rather than hoping to bomb him. I also agree that Kelly's motivation to fight smaller men isn't going to be as large as Taylor's was...but can you drum up any specific junior middleweights you might give a chance to beat Pavlik? Just curious.
