The options are:
"He was past his prime":
This has got to be a big one. People discredit Cotto, Mayweather, etc for beating a person past their prime. However, that person past his prime can still be damn good. I think Oscar/Shane/Tszyu were all very good even though they were past their best when they lost to Mayweather/Cotto/Hatton.
Option #2: "He was weight drained"
This one isn't that generally annoying as some cases are somewhat true. People like Jones who had to lose a bunch of muscle to get down in weight was tough. However people like Tarver and Miranda blame their losses on that is pretty sad. Tarver wasn't weight drained because he didn't lose all muscle. I think Miranda was looking for somehting else.
Option #3: "He was too small/blown up"
This gets my vote by far. I hate this excuse so much. Whenever a fighter jumps up in weightclasses it's pinned on the other fighter. Ricky Hatton, Felix Trinidad, Winky Wright, Cory Spinks, etc were all too small. Bullshit. Especially certain cases like Trinidad, Hatton, and Wright.
Boxers have 8 weeks (or more) during camp to get used to the weight and they agreed to fight. It's not the other fighters fault that he takes the fight anyway because they want to fight.
I'd much rather see Floyd Mayweather vs Ricky Hatton then say Floyd Mayweather vs Andre Berto (who's now the WBC ranked mandatory). To say that the smaller man getting beat doesn't count as a good defense (especially if that person is really good) is pretty pathetic.
If not then why was Duran able to beat Lenoard, when he was the smaller man. Basillo beat Robinson when he was moving up from 147 pounds (who weighed 153 on the night of that fight while Robinson weighed 160. That's a 7 pound difference and yet he still pulled it off.) People forget that the fighters fighting a fighter moving up from a different weight class is still a great fighter.
If you lose, you lose and 97% of the time it doesn't have an excuse.
edit: Before anyone jumps the gun and says "You just did this because your a fan of Hopkins and Mayweather and don't accept the truth!!" The fighter examples are the first that came to mind.
how about?
"it was suspect judging and i'm calling my lawyers to launch an investigation".
that is hands down the most pussy ass excuse ever uttered by a fighter...
maybe there should have been an investigation into oscar's fight with sturm, or how he won those fights against whitaker and quartey by such wide margins, or how about some of the fights he's promoted?
barrera-marquez, didn't one judge give marquez 10 rounds?

Not only did Foreman claim he was drugged against Ali (re-iterating the claim many years later after saying that he finally accepted the L), but in his autobiography "By George", he actually claims that he was about to knock out Ali but he saw his friend in the audience rooting for Ali and it ruined his concentration and hurt his feelings to see a friend betray him like that.
Tysons "broken back" but that was funny more than anything
Harris claiming Witters camp poisoned him was a good un aswell.
Tyson's "broken back" was funny but it wasn't an excuse. It was after he KO'd Etienne in less than minute.
There were rumors about Tyson pulling out due to the flu or whatnot, people weren't even sure if the fight would take place, so Gray asked him what the deal was.
Mike: I broke my back. My back is broken.
Gray: What part?
Mike: Spinal.
wat fight was that?I forgot
The first bout with Marquez.

I feel like boxing is the most mental sport on the planet. There's so much psychology involved when, rather than a team exercise, you have two men that have to stare each other in the eye and fight. It's a battle of will, aggression, pride, fear - it's a mind game almost as much as it's physical.
I bring that up because I feel like that's where 90% of the excuses stem from; the psychological need to remove responsibility of a loss from lack of skill. Most boxers would become crushed if they admitted the man that beat them is simply superior. Even those that come close usually go with, "He was the better man tonight.." Or "He simply executed better."
As a random example look at some of the men a superb athlete like Roy Jones Jr. or Floyd Mayweather fought. Can anyone argue that Gatti got his ass whooped for any other reason than Floyd is in another league? Boxers can't always let themselves admit they met someone who is better than them, though.
So instead of the truth, "He's too strong for me.." or "His boxing intelligence is higher than mine and he figured me out..", we don't get, "I'm not fast enough," or "Damn, he whooped my ass.." instead we hear, "Nothing he did surprised me," and "No, he didn't hit that hard," followed with, "I just had an off night" even when we know that boxer would have lost on ANY night.
So we get goofy excuses ranging from poisoning, to sickness, to someone using a substance on their glove. Even when they admit fault its usually in the sense that they were just sick, or weight drained- not that it was their skills.
Point: I usually just chalk up the excuses to the mental aspect of the sport and don't let it annoy me much either way. Sure, I might laugh at them or make a mental note that they can't be honest with themselves, but I don't usually end up disliking someone for playing head games with them self.
Briggs also said his back was hurt against McCline and he had ashtma against Wilson. Cant remember if he made any excuses for losing to Lennox....
Briggs had tremendous respect for Lewis after that fight. He took it too Big Len for 5 rounds and came off 2nd best, he took that defeat like a man.
"I beat Lennox Lewis"- Vitali Klitschko
"I came down too quick from my caffeine high"- Vinny Pazienza
"They poisoned the steaks"- Antonio Tarver
"Witter was drugged up"- Vivian Harris
"They put stuff on the gloves"- Chris Byrd
Yeah me too. I love it though when a fighter completely takes the 12th round off in a very close fight and then storms out of the ring not even giving an interview in a fight he thought he won and was robbed.
lol @ the winky subliminal
i still say weight affected him, since he was winning the first half of the fight IMO, then faded and lost the later rounds
lol Gatti shattered his hand in the 4th round, finished the fight throwing punches with it. Not a second went by when he altered his style or began to complain outright..........he just grimaced.
In fact the announcing crew made a bigger deal out of it that than he did.
Maybe other fighters can take a page out of his book...........and more specifically follow a code that is silently implied when a person is getting paid millions of dollars to beat the shit out of someone on television.
You don't fucking pussy out. Or else let someone else get the paycheck.

increidible he still did more in a round he took off than his opponent....
i think the issue of too/small too big can go both ways
someone like hatton who only goes a few pounds over his usual weight shouldnt have any excuses
but someone like winky who goes, what 15+ pounds over his usual fighting weight for the first time have a valid argument. yes he chose to do that fight but the guy just wants a pay day. yes you can say he lost fair and square but you can't say bernard is a better fighter based on that fight
Winky really only had to come up 10 pounds to 170 (when he had been fighting at 160 for two years) and Bernard had to come down 5.
That really is only then a 5 pound difference lost. Besides I honestly don't believe the weight issue had anything to do with Winky losing. He just wasn't landing cleanly and his agression wasn't effective.
Anyway, I don't want this to turn into a Bernard vs Winky discussion, so let's bring it back at hand here. The "blown up" issue isn't really that big of a deal. Winky Wright for example has almost the perfect style to go up in weight and compete sucessfully at. People like Basillo had the agression factor that gave him an advantage at the higher weight.
