Can oantyone answer that question. I saw he was the quest on FNF and during the show they mentioned he was inducted into the HOF. That seems like an injustice to the fighters.
What has this guy done for boxing that warrants being inducted? Besides running his mouth?
you know, everyone has opinions. i have probably listened to the guy speak, what, maybe a few dozen times and personally, i've never heard him say anything that i thought was profound, entertaining or even meaningful.
in contrast, i have read quite few posts and debates from people on this post that were very insightful and actually changed my opinion on a few subjects, solely because of what they had to say.
maybe it's safe to say; just because you and a few others happen to like the guy and happen to identify with some or many of the things he says, doesn't
make him any more or any less knowledgable about any subject. it just means you like and respect the guy and that's cool.
but don't try to come off on other people like they don't shit about boxing just because they don't share your same opinion. i mean what's next? we ain't going to heaven because we don't congregate and donate to your church.
the question was, what has he done for the sport of boxing that got him inducted into the HOF? I'd like to know. **** what he has said or what he has forgotten and all the rest of that bullshit. what has he done?
thought this was interesting......
I'm not sure if you knew this or not, but Bert Sugar is a very respected print media icon that edited several boxing magazines including Boxing Illustrated and Ring Magazine. It was Sugar that brought Ring Magazine out of the gutter following Don King and the ABC tournament controversy in the 70s. He's written more than 80 boxing books and has preserved the history of the sport like none other.
I'm not sure you if you grasp the significance of media in sports, but it is the reason any of us find out about boxing.
Now this is what the whole thread was intened to answer. I have no idea what Sugar has done, that is why I was asking.
I have been watching boxing for 30 years and really only follow the fighters. I've never been interested in following boxing writers, pundits, anoouncers, promoters etc., nothing wrong with it, just not my thing.
I've heard Sugar speak many times on t.v. and have never been particularly impressed with any things he had to say and didn't care a whole lot for his persona. I don't like the guy or dislike the guy, frankly, I couldn't careless.
However, because I had never been impressed with the guy and had never heard anything from him that I thought was particularly relevant, when I heard he was inducted, I was honestly curious as to exactly what he has done to earn that. This is/was an attempt to learn.
Obviously not you, but MANY posters on this board are so simple minded that anytime they read anything they can't understand or disagree with they get defensive, flustered and catty like a bunch of little bitches.
Ah, the internet. Where any random jackass can question anyone that has done more for boxing than posting on a message board.
Better to let the world believe you are a simple moron than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

and not only fighters get inducted into the hall of fame, so why would his induction be an injustice to the fighters???
Refs, announcers, anylists, writers... they all get into the hall of fame
Bert was the editor of Ring Magazine and i own 2 or 3 of his books i believe.
His book of the 100 greatest champions of all time is one of my favorite books of its kind
I dont like Berts personality as much as the next guy, but the guy is good for boxing. He's got no enemy in me thats for sure, and he looks like a nice guy...
So are you saying that if i can announce properly I should get inducted into the HOF?
Maybe someone can tell me exactly what t.v. boxing show Sugar is the announcer for now or has been in the past? Not been a guest on but was "the" host or announcer.
All conjecture. No one has been able to mention ONE quantifiable accomplishemnt Sugar has done for boxing?
I'm still waiting....

I think you are grossly underestimating the professionalism required to be a good boxing commentator. You need a lot of schooling and experience to call a fight without stuttering and saying "You know what I'm saying" every 5 words. It is a very difficult job, and this is coming from someone who co-hosted a boxing radio show for 6 months. It takes a lot of training to keep the show moving smoothly.
We learned from Lawrence Taylor that you can't just stick a former pro in a college man's job.

Answers:
1. , Sugar has turned his talent to other media, working with HBO. that is taken from the HBO web site.
2. Jews. Well I am asking questions on here and hoping to gain answers. There are many people on here that know lots about boxing and will assist me with my questions.
Basically, i want to know why there always is so many people from the jewish background having jobs in such areas as commentators and as judges.
For so many years every big fight had Jerry Roth as a judge, Now what experience does he have. Why do i hardly ever see Black Judges??? I want to know why people like Roth, Max Kellerman, Bert sugar, Lederman and so on are in these positions when clearly there are so many black people that are more experienced and also have fought in the ring that can and will do a better job.
Now yeah, i want to know and will do my best to find out why and see what can be done.
I have never seen Sugar on HBO boxing, unless maybe it was a quick comment on a "Countdown" to a major fight. Also if you go back throughout the history of HBO boxing, has there been even one other Jewish announcer other than Lederman and Kellerman? Obviously you can't question Lederman's qualifications. Boxing is meant to be done by professional fighters. Announcing is usually best left to professional announcers. HBO has always left one spot for a trainer or boxer.
how do we know their stories are accurate?????>........thats why to me fighters before tv dont count....
In Newfield, Liebling, Goodman and most of Sugar's era, most of the fights are recounted accurately and TV was around.
Then you are discounting a lot of great fighters, including Sugar Ray Robinson as a welterweight. Would you like to wear the tag as the guy who discounted Robinson's welterweight career? How about Harry Greb and Jack Johnson? Charley Burley and Sam Langford?
What you're proposing just isn't practical.

** Basically Sugar represents a traditional face of boxing and the media which happens to be NYC centric, or US centric in the global sense. Plenty of "Jews" and "jews" in boxing history and the media world.
I really don't care one way or the other about Sugar, but using your basis of inquiry, why don't I just ask you why there are so many black boxers when clearly more Mexicans that are more experienced in the ring that can and will do a better job? How dumb would that sound?
Do you ever ask why Michael Buffer is always the big match announcer? Plenty more announcers with more experience and having fought in the ring when Buffer started out? Or why is Floyd always tops on Ring's p4p list when there are other fighters with more experience and can and will do a better job?
Last I checked, there were plenty enough "black people" announcing next to Merchant, Lampley, and Lederman. Maybe you have a blacked out TV that doesn't show Foreman, Steward, Lewis, and Jones in there.
As to Judges, unless you can clone yourself into dozens of replicas to sit in on every venue across the country, I just don't see how you can assert "Why do i hardly ever see Black Judges???" with any authority.
It seems you don't see well because you don't know enough to know what you are and aren't seeing.
I don't usually have problems with you, but this is a kind of stupid post, ya dig?
Murray Goodman, Nat Fleischer, Pierce Egan, A.J. Liebling, and soon Jack Newfield are all in the IBHOF under the "Non-Participant" criteria. All documented, reported, and kept records of the sport and preserved it's history where TV cameras weren't able to. Without these guys, and Bert Sugar alongside them, guys like you wouldn't have any frame of references to compare Harry Greb to Bernard Hopkins.
I suggest you research a little more and look into the IBHOF. The website is www.ibhof.com . There you can see that non-participants don't take up space where fighters would be entered. Fighters, for the record, are counted as "participants." You already knew that I bet, am I right?
I don't know your father personally, but I'm sure that if Bert Sugar wanted to make your Pops seem insignificant in a discussion on boxing it wouldn't be much of a sweat.

Since when being a boxing historian puts you into the Hall of Fame?? My father knows 10 times more about boxing then Bert does, I guess my father should also be in the hall of fame.
Bert is an idiot who is obsessed with the old timers, he overrates many fighters that are OK fighters at best. His knowledge is not as good as some of you n00bs think, especially when it comes to international boxers.
Bert may know more about boxing then 99% of Boxingscene but so fucking what, most people in year don't know shit about boxing.
Hall of Fame should be for boxer and trainers only, it's a joke when you see some good fighters that never makes it to the hall of fame and we have guys like Bert in the Hall of Fame.

He hates Canadian and British fighters.
The late Jack Fiske once famously stated that he was very fond of England and it's beautiful scenery and landscape. "Except for the British boxers, they suck." I guess it was an opine of the time.
That people are still talking crap about Bert Sugar is hilarious. If there was a "Stump the Sugar" show, none of us would make it out of the first round.
#1-what does HBO have to do with Bert Sugar?
#2-why are all your posts about Jews anyways?

Bert Sugar has done alot for the sport. In journalism, history keeping and basically being an expert in the sport for a very long time.
I don't agree with him all the time because he's very preferential towards the old time fighters but it's hard to argue with a man who was there first hand and seen it all.
Bert has been great for boxing because he truly loves the sport and has kept the sport alive when it was at it's lowest.
And yes, he knows more that 99% of people here.
Well he likes to Omitt Lennox Lewis form the top ten list of greatest Heavyweights of all time ,either he is biased or his opinion is very poor
He hates Canadian and British fighters.
i think he knows fuck nothing about how boxing works .....i mean, he said tarver beat jones in the first fight just cus jones' face got smashed more and the crowd went crazy with the tarver 20 second flurry of which only 2 or 3 shots got through jones' guard.....
if he thinks Tarver beat RJJ in the 1st fight he is an idiot Roy pulled that fight in the last 2/3 rounds ,Taver had quite a few spells of inactivity in that fight
