It seems to me that there are just too many wheight classes out there, too many diferent organizations, too many champions, several of them undeserving, some of the classes are separated by a mere 3-4lbs, which is quite ridiculous.
I think reducing the wheight classes and separating them at 10lbs would help increase the level of the competition.
I'd put it:
Flywheight - 110 lbs
Batamwheight - 120 lbs
Featherwheight - 130 lbs
Lightwheight - 140 lbs
Welterwheight - 150 lbs
Midlewheight - 160 lbs
Supermidlewheight - 170 lbs
Light Heavywheight - 180 lbs
Cruiserwheight - 200 lbs
Heavywheight - over 200 lbs
weight is fine, its the fact that there are to many champions. What we need is 1 champion and 1 organization and and international commision, but sadly greed over rides the love of the sport and as a result this will never happen, boxing will always be fragmented and there is nothing we can do about it.
I like the sport the way it is pretty much. The extra weight classes help the tweeners. We witnessed greatness in one of the extra divisions over the past 20 years (168)
Wilfredo Gomez, Barrera, Morales all Super Bantams.
I see your point rooq, but my idea is that the fighters would be much more compeled to fight at their natural wheight class this way and stop with the constant jumping around.
I think boxing should be a sport for all kinds of people, include them all, but 110 lbs is "chicks" wheight for christ sake! What I've been seeing is that there are incredibly diminutive fighters at the lower classes, really short, and even at that size they are incredibly raquitic to make the wheight. A 110lbs man is a very small man. I think people are not very interested in watching boxers who look sick out there.
I also believe 10lbs is not that much, it's a week of work for a pro athlete in either direction.
Well, you know, it's just my opinion.
good point about boxers fighting at a natural weight class, but i think this could be achieved by having the weigh-in a few hours before the fight. draining yourself to make a weight you aren't suited to is fuckin dangerous and the sport would be a lot safer if this wasn't allowed.
there are a few fighters at the gym i go to who are naturally less than 130lb. i don't think that alienating them from the sport just to cut down the number of weight classes is very fair.
and as for the popularity of the sport, would it really make a difference if some of the lighter weight classes didn't exist? i don't think so.
theres a reason the difference between some of the lighter weights seems too small - at that weight, a few lbs makes a much bigger difference.
in your system, its much more difficult for a 5ft 3 flyweight to gain 10lbs to fight at bantamweight, then it would be for a 6ft supermiddleweight to gain 10lbs to fight at light heavyweight.

One thing I like about boxing is that a person is never too small for boxing, but to the casual fans, their are too many weight classes. getting rid of "super-light" divisions is not a bad idea. Except for light heavyweight
The weights are all too low, too many midgets in the sport. MIddleweight should be about 180, lightweigh about 150. A 150 lb man is very small. All these titles for men less than 130 make no sense at all.
Edit: the current weights are 19th C standards when people were smaller. And most people don't want to watch "athletes" that small.
right...who in their right mind would want to watch people like rafael marquez or israel vazquez :duh:

The weights are not bad IMO. Like someone said, having 4 damn belts completely takes out the competition IMO. It's too easy to be considered a "champion" these days.

I don't mind having so many weight classes as I do so many belts. There isn't much more you can do to devalue the term "champion" than having four of them.
