how great is james toney?
Many people dont give him his props because hes a blown up heavywieght now but look at what hes achieved hes became a world champ in middlewieght, super middlewieght, light heavy and crusier then he became heavywieght champ but lost the belt cause he used steroids.
Yes he is one of my favourite fighters because of his style hes influenced alot of people to use the shoulder roll i think he made it popular when he started using it.
How great do u think james toney is? if he becomes heavywieght champ would u consider him a atg?
Heres a few of his best bouts:
James only given 1 round to finish the fight shows his will to retain his belt.
Beats jirov the Arturo Gatti of the cruiserwieght division toney traded blows and won.
behind on the scorecards toney knocks out nunn to get his belt.
In my opinion theres too many fighters that go over looked and at the moment people over look james toney because of his present state but theres stil time for him to turn it around dont u agree?
James Toney is the only man alive that has a legitimate claim that he was better than Roy Jones in his prime.
james toney and roy jones jr are the two most naturally talented fighters i've seen in my lifetime, and a weight drained james toney could still hang with roy. james is "a blown up supermiddlweight " who moved up to hw and beat down and knocked out ATG evander holyfield. if james was as dedicated to being in shape as floyd mayweather we would all be talking today about how james toney is the greatest of all time. end of story
Yea, but then he lost twice to him. The KO put fear into Jones. IMO Jones was always scared of Tarver. Even though Jones is one of my favorite fighters ever, I would always pick Tarver over him.
lol tarver put fear in jones ? :P more like jones put fear in jones i think jones jus doubted himself after the first fight.
Who would be scared of tarver? hes no mike tyson.
Toney is 39 and is a little older the Jones, Toney had 80 career fights to Jones 55.
Yeah? Toney has lots of fights, I don't understand what that has got to do with anything.
Thadzi really didn't beat Toney, I had Toney winning the fight.
It was still close enough for the judges to consider that he lost. If it was Toney at his best he would've knocked him out. Just like if it had been Roy Jones at his best he would've beaten both Tarver and Johnson.
Jones is fighting a washed up welterweight in a week.
What I meant was, RJJ hasn't stopped fighting yet. He said RJJ quit, well he hasn't. He is still fighting.
Hell No.
Pre-2003 version beats Tarver, lets not forget Jones won in their first fight, and he was coming down from Heavyweight.

Toney always fight to the level of his competition though, so you cant really use that as an argument.
You can't say that about Floyd Mayweather, and that's why he is a level higher than Toney. He takes pride in his professionalism and always shows up in top physical and mental shape. That's why you should never hear Toney mentioned on the same plateau as Leonard and Mayweather. He hasn't earned it.
Toney wasn't even 30 when he started losing. Roy Jones is nearly 40. Glen Johnson and Tarver were NOT bums.
Montell Griffin wasn't a bum either but Thadzi? He was a decent fighter and a title contender but he had no business beating Toney.
And Roy Jones is still fighting, he is fighting against Tito next week.
yeh 2 fights in 2 years rofl a very active roy jones haha hes stil fighting yes but hes hardly active at all.
I even reckon tito might ko jones
Yeah I mean when you look at the Toney in the Littles and Barkley fight related to the Jones fight, its obvious he wasnt at his best physically and mentally. Still doesnt excuse it though, and Jones imo would have always beaten James.
The Griffin fights were supposed to get Toney a rematch with Jones. The second fight being one I thought he won.
As one of the most successful amateurs of all time, and a world champion, its hard to classify Tarver as a bum, but he is no match for a Prime Jones.Prime or not, Tarver would beat Jones.

Wow, some of these Toney fans are going WAY overboard. James was a good fighter, could've been a great one but his style doesn't match well with Jones' AT ALL. Toney fought at his best as a counter puncher when his opponent came forward at him but Jones didn't do that.
Jones had faster, superior footwork (that Toney never really had), he also had faster hands and worked as a counter puncher who would at times leap in with unorthodox left hooks and rights, potshotting his opponent to impress the judges.
Toney had real trouble countering a fast moving target like Jones, he couldn't predict what Roy was going to do next. Toney couldn't bring his great inside game against RJJ either.
I'd pick Toney over almost any pressure fighter provided he comes into the fight well-conditioned like against Barkley (his calmness in the ring, inside work, right hand counters, upperbody movements and chin are unbelievable) and I pick him to outbox a lot of guys too but not Roy Jones.
RJJ had his number.
oh this isnt even about RJJ but they have had a similar career i mean come on we all know roy jones had the advantage over toney because of his style.
Toney was wieght drained also had to shave of a few pounds theres no excuse there but he was never dominated.
RJJ has lost to bums they fell of the radar a bit like toney but unlike RJJ toney kept on fighting showing his will to get back up there.
RJJ jus quit imo after losing thats why there records look so much different now and RJJ biggest win is toney.
Get a grip of reality, you calling world champions and hard workers like Tarver, Woods and Johnson bums? In that case EVERY fighter Roy Jones fought was a bum so Roy must be another bum too, just slightly above those other bums.
Sure Roy was weight drained, shot and all that, whatever makes you feel good, but he still got knocked out by both Tarver and Johnson when he was a highly regarded fighter so those wins DO count as achievements for both.
First off every boxer is a hard worker.
Secondly roy jones jr's best win was toney and bhop thats why his competition was always critisized they even had a press conference about it.
Tarver and johnson what a joke do u think they could of even hurt jones in his prime ? no and why did they want to fight him when he was coming from heavywieght and not before ? hmmm a lil fishy there maybe saw a opportunity but oh well.
Gleen didnt even hit him cleanly jones jus fell hard on the back of his head the fall knocked him out more then the dam punch hahah and tarver is jus a joke always been a bum nothing gd to say about him.
His fights were lost in the kitchen. Him being lethargic in his younger years was because of his battle with weight imo. Toney is a gym warrior, sparred round after round with the toughest guys.
Then again he's admitted he hates running.

out of respect for roy jones jr dnt u ever play that glen knocked out roy card u piece of crap roy was wieght drained and shot.
Tarver has always been a bum and woods rofl another bum form sheffield.

Toney is an ATG fighter with ATG skills but tended to lack that ATG work ethic. That being said he is a true throwback to fighters that would fight anyone anywhere. Great great fighter with skills that would leave you in awe. If he had that unbreakable work ethic than the sky would have been the limit for lights out.
i agree with that my friend its all his wieght problems and stamina that held him back alot also cost him alot of fights.
