That MMA Fighters don't spend too much time on their boxing game.
Liddell was throwing a bunch of wide looping punches, as well was Silva, and they didn't even very them. There were a few occasions where I spotted the opportunity for Liddell to sneak in an uppercut and knock Silva out. Rather then duck and slip punches they put their arm in the way and peary a shot or simply not block it at all and keep swinging freely. I have noticed that Quinton Jackson has some hand skills, maybe the reason why he running the bitch right now? I dunno, but from what I've seen he is all around good and that counter right to that weak ass body shot Liddell threw at him was well executed.
Anyway, Maybe this is why Boxing and UFC is so apples and oranges?
While Boxers have great hand to hand skills, UFC fighters are experts on the floor.. A territory few Boxers have been in inside a ring before. But most UFC fighters lack the stand up skills a boxer has.
I seriously doubt that if it was a fist fight with no wrestling involved, with the same UFC gloves, Boxers would get dealt though like many claim they would.
That's their ace in the hole when it comes to their sport and this (boxing) is ours when it comes to our sport.
Anyway, watching the fight with a bunch of UFC fans and MMA fans after they were all pumped and exited talking about how great of a fight it had been and I was left scratching my head... the fight was so short to me and the action not even that great. I've tried to get into it but I simply just can't.
I find Pride more entertaining though dunno why.. but for now, I think I would rather just stick to watching boxing.
Comparing the two sports is immature and a waste of time, Boxers will do better against MMAists in boxing matches and MMAists will lay it down against Boxers in MMA. Two seperate sports.
The only reason why theres a rivalry in the first place is because ufc fighters started running their mouths about how they are all around better athletes, were better conditioned and fought in a much rougher sport. Acting like boxers are one dimensional, like Floyd would really try to use the philly shell in a street fight, c'mon. The sport of boxing should have been dead by now by what UFC experts were saying, after all the UFC was killing boxing off right? Everyone knows that boxing is doing boxing harm and not anything else, but lemme ask you this..who started comparing who?
I do agree that they are like apples and oranges in a way but they are still fight sports none the less and in many aspects boxing laid the foundation for ufc. How you gonna take the rounds, the scorecards, the corners, the weight classes, one minute brakes, etc as well as other aspects from one sport then completely diss it?
The UFC was regulated by the Nevada State Athletic Commision, they did not "take" the rules and regulations you mentioned, it was put upon them. And boxing did not lay the foundation for MMA, acutally, of all the martial arts, boxing is probably the least influential. And I would have to say, being a former high school and college wrestler myself, MMA fighters may very well be overall better conditioned than boxers. I've also done some boxing as a youth, but then again, they are a different type of conditioning; one gets no resolve in comparing the two. UFC fighters only call out boxers and vice versa for publicity and promotion and the possibility of luring them into thier own sport for a payday. If you fall into the hype so emotionally as you seem to be, you're being fooled by the "business" aspect of both sports.
I understand that there is far more to MMA than striking, but that kind of shit makes me doubt the experience level of many of the guys participating in this sport.
You just answered your own question^^
Matt Hughes is known for his wrestling ability not his striking ability. What helped GSP to win his fight was his ability to neutralize Matt Hughes take down. His wrestling helped him way more than his striking abilities.
Same thing can be said about pure strikers that goes in MMA. Grapplers will '' doubt the experience level of many of the guys participating in this sport''- like you said.
First time I've entered a boxing v. MMA thread. I don't follow MMA, but I do catch an occasional match. I watched a replay of GSP v. Hughes (2nd fight) the other night and I have to say that I was pretty impressed with GSP's punching. He demonstrated a very good jab, a good guard and threw his right hand very well. He dominated Hughes largely due to his superiority as a striker IMO. I admit that I probably don't understand the complexity of the MMA fight game, but it seems to me that any MMA fighter would want to do his best to sharpen his boxing skills if he wants to be effective on his feet. I just don't see how throwing loopy off-balance punches protects you better from kicks, knees, etc as some poster suggested. I've seen a lot of these guys helplessly paw at the air and then get whacked solid by the most ridiculously telegraphed shot. I understand that there is far more to MMA than striking, but that kind of shit makes me doubt the experience level of many of the guys participating in this sport.
Well it is what it is, I don't like when people try to compare and say mma is better or boxing is better, I always end up defending both of them LOL. I just enjoy watching both of them.
No prob I think I have the best avatar on this forum lol  you should check out horus avy he gots a fine ass girl on there lol
What is her name?
Thought it was a really entertaining fight myself
- one of the best I've seen in MMA for a while.
Comparable to Bika-Codrington in a lot of ways, although Bika-Codrington had more consistent action & a stoppage to finish it.
And I am pretty well educated in the ground game - am a former Judo state champion - but so many of the recent MMA fights have bored the living hell out of me.
They either stall each other out on the ground, or the stronger guy gets on top & gradually pummels the other guy, which is not an edifying spectacle.
A ground game with lots of scrambling, change-overs, & slick submissions can be very entertaining, but that is incredibly rare.
nah, this topic was about hand skills. it got turned into that though.
well that dont make sense lol, because obviously boxers are gonna have the better hand skills, thats all they have to use even a blind man would see that lol

In other words...
You wanted to bring that Boxing Vs MMA type of topic back?
Me too, they should not be compared, I enjoy both as individual sports, comparing them is like comparing football and basketball. This "rivalry is getting a bit ridiculous.

i would think these guys would try and throw shorter, straight punches! they are very effective, and i would think they would be better against being taken down, or hit with some of those retarded haymakers, since they are not over committing themselves, getting of balance, and out of position! always works well against a wide puncher for me! maybe i am misssing something!

MMA fighters use a different "boxing" approach. It's not like the sport of Boxing at all. First off, MMA fighters cannot defend the same as in regular boxing, the gloves are much smaller; putting your hands up will not help much, watch Tito Ortiz vs Chuck Liddell. Second, MMA fighters do not stand as angled against thier opponent. They are taught to stand more squared up in order to be ready to wrestle and deliver and defend against leg kicks. In MMA, fighters cannot go in there with a conventional boxing stance. As far as Boxing skills themselves, I agree that they are not on the level of the most accomplished pro Boxers. But keep in mind, MMA is a fairly young sport and much more dynamic. The top pro Boxers have been boxing since they were 5 - 10 years old, and they've only been boxing. MMA fighters generally begin thier sport after high school, and they are learning all forms of fighting, not just boxing. So yeah, the "boxing" skill level will be significantly different.
4 oz gloves should allow for harder hits, even if you don't want to throw full force into the punch. It's not like it was before when they wore no gloves and you had to throw with a hammer strike and not with your knuckels hitting.
Even when Tyson threw looping shots, they weren't as wide (nor slow) as Chucks and Tyson could get his hand back in quick fashion.
The Kickboxers are the better punchers for sure.
It must be like learning how to throw a baseball properly. Boxers have been doing it for so long it's beautiful looking, although not everybody: Mayorga isn't a good example of a perfect puncher.
Floyd's style is the problem and it's true, it's not going to work in MMA.
10 years from now, MMA might have some Hybrid type fighters to make everything look nice.
Thanks for the name in your Avatar. It's the first thing my eye catches when I see your post and everytime I'm like "damn, she is nice."

I tell it like it is. Your saying that boxing technique doesn't work in real fighting which is completely untrue. Taking words from Joe Rogan who thinks UFC is the sport of fighting, yet the same punches you use with gloves can be used without them and are as or even more effective. How is a wide looping punch more effective then a clean short and straight one? How is throwing the same thing over and over repeatedly more effective then throwing a variety of punches?
Excuse me but I never said boxing techniques doesn't work in real fighting. Please do not put words that I have not said.
You are exhibiting exactly what I was thinking it will happen -the Boxing Vs MMA type of thread. You really tried to mask it by but in the end it becomes so obvious.
Let me break it down for you guys.
Mixed Martial Arts fighters can't box like boxers do. It simply does not work in MMA. MMA fighters have to look out for elbows, takedowns, clinches, standing chokes, kicks and a variety of other things that can happen.
Boxing does not teach you how to defend against any of this. It is true that some MMA fighters train with boxers and boxing coaches, but thats to learn how to throw the punch, not use the defense.
This causes MMA fighters striking, in some cases to look sloppy, when in reality it's how they HAVE to fight. They don't have much of a choice.
Comparing the two sports is pretty stupid. If an MMA fighter went into Mixed Martial Arts and started using boxing defense and footwork, they would be dominated. I would not want to see some guy pop in there with the philly shell, get thai clinched and kneed into another demension.
The top MMA fighters are all world class athletes. Just like the top boxers are. At the end of the day they are much different sports, that use different types of strikes and need different types of defense.
MMA fans have learned this, some boxing have as well. I can't wait for the day when both can get along and respect eachothers sports.
If you guys want to see the next generation of MMA fighter. Just go look at GSP.
He is almost a black belt in BJJ, Black belt in TKD, black belt in Kyokushin(started at age six) Karate, trains WBA light-middleweight world champion Joachim Alcine and goes 8 5 minute rounds with him. trains Judo and does Muay Thai with phil nurse. He also trains with the Canadian Olympic wrestling team and was going to try out (and from the sounds of it make it to) for the Olympics this year, but took the fight with Hughes instead. Also understand the Olympics for wrestlers is not like for boxers. The best wrestlers alive go to the Olympics.
Also, The Silva Vs Chuck fight was not one of the best fights ever. It was only one of the best to uneducated fans. It was entertaining, but I have seen better.
If boxing fans actually learned about grappling, they would enjoy MMA much more. Grappling is probably the most complicated aspect of any sport on earth today. Becoming a black belt can take many years of dedication, and you have to learn phonebooks worth of information.
When I hear boxing or sport fans say "they are just hugging on the ground" it makes me laugh. Why? simple, it shows how completely and utterly idiotic they are. It's like watching people play chess and saying "They are just moving little pieces of plastic around", or watching football and saying "they are just throwing a weird shaped ball at eachother".
