okay this fight is very old. pernell faught bravely but got his but kicked. i do belive a prime pre-drug pernell would of outboxed tito but thats not the point of this thread.
I just want people to go back watch this fight. mainly the last 20 seconds.
Pernell squads down while takeing punches (not flush) he gets down so low it looks at first that he sits down. If you watch it slowly he uses the ropes to push himself around but his feet are the only part of his body that are on the ground. This was a Pernell past his prime, and after cleaning up his drug problems.
if anybody can make a gif for me of those last 20 sec, i would appriciate it.
much respect for sweet pea. i have him in my all time top 3.( i was born in 1987 so im not going to rank fighters i have not watched enough fights to make up my mind. i dont like doing list from what i hear only what i see.)
Drugs didn't break his jaw in the opening rounds but you are correct in that he would have done much better maybe even won if he hadn't taken on that lifestyle.
trinidad always would have troubled whitaker.
whitaker is a smaller guy. he's was not a filled out middleweight like hopkins or wright (who moved up and looked bigger than tito) and not 5'10 like oscar, he was like 5'5 or 5'6 and peaked at lightweight.
Hurtado was a good fighter man. Dont kid yourself. he was a cuban olympian.
Hurtado was coming off nicely and Pernell fought pretty much the best version of him. Not the crap that fought Tszyu.
I know he was good. I don't care either: because I know a prime Pea wouldn't have been so off balance and unable to use his legs.
He brawled with Tito which I dont know why. I think he was trying to prove a point because he was at the tail end of his career.
It cost him, but it was an outstanding fight.
I have it closer then most.
It's because he realized that his reflexes wouldn't allow him to stay on his feet and move. He'd been looking horrible since '96, compared to his prime self. Off balance. He still had the speed and the slicks, but by the time he fought Oscar, he couldn't move as fluidly. The Hurtado fight was a good indicator of how faded Pete had become.
a prime whitaker wouldve taken it.. even the whitaker who fought DLH wouldve spanked him..
it was a sad fight, seeing one of my fav fighters just gettin beaten
he didnt elect to box and it cost him the fight
I always wondered if Tito did the cold-water casting thing with his tape for this fight, he put such a terrific beating on Whitaker. I didn't think I would ever see anyone touch sweet-pea like that.
i hate useing excusess because at the end pernell will always have the L. but pernell faught the wrong fight and you could tell his reflexes were shot. he read titos punches wrong and he got caught do to wrongfully measureing the punches. all tho there are some rounds were i belive pea layed the faundation to beating tito witch oscar evolved into his performance
