Fair points. I still believe that PBF's shoulder-roll defense is much easier to sustain over time than Roy's 'defense.' In fact, Mayweather may even be better at it in a few years. Look at James Toney. He managed to sustain a great defense over the years, despite becoming a swollen fuel blivet. PBF doesn't ever seem to exert himself, so age won't affect his defense nearly as much as it did Roy's. Roy jumped in and out with his hands down. He had the athletic ability to get away with it for a while, but everybody knew that sooner or later it was going to end ugly for him. If he decides to fight until his mid-thirties, I believe PBF will be much more of a force than Roy was at that age (even in a much tougher division). I'm not saying he'll be undefeated (I always pick against PBF btw), but he'll still be a top fighter.
i agree that floyds style will sustain longer than roys.. BUT its too early to call it... roy didnt get caught til he was 35... one thing i give roy credit for over floyd... is he keeps fighting... even after getting beaten... real champions come back... floyd retires after every fight... roy won a piece of the heavyweight title... and didnt retire... u know damn well floyd would be DONE if he did that.. floyd really doesnt wanna lose... which i absolutely dont blame him... but u cant retire in your prime... i wanna see what intangibles you have AFTER your prime... i think thats part of a fighters legacy... fighting after your prime
Uhh Hopkins was not in his prime and neither was Jones when they both fought. You haven't got a clue so stop making yourself look foolish.
lol i agree neither roy or bhop was in there primes
Floyd tends to have brittle hands. His fault or not, that's a flaw. He also can get TOO defensive if he's allowed to. He could, technically, lull himself to sleep and get caught with something. He also has problems with dealing with someones jab, if it's a decent one. De La Hoya and Judah had success with that. They didn't have the stamina, but it's not hard to find a guy who has stamina and a decent or better jab (See, Paul Williams) Not saying Williams would beat him, just saying.
Flaws, he has.
Also, as he ages, his shoulder-roll defense might not cut it. You have to be VERY alert to pull that off. Older guys aren't always that alert.

this is a fuken joke. roy jones jr in his PRIME was UNTOUCHABLE!!!!!! when roy fought his opponents, he fuken toyed wif em. and rarely got hit. roy could have easily destroyed so many of his opponents way before when he actually did. he would carry his opponnent through rounds so the fans can get a spectacle.
floyd as a great technician of a boxer, is a great boxer. but we'll see how well he goes when his 35. fluctuatin between divisions.
honestly, these are how the classes work:
1-really unskilled fighters (or sum disrepectful ppl call them as "bums")
2-amateur
3- up and commer
3- contender
4-champion
5-undisputed champion/elites
6- ROY JONES Jr
ok ill agree with that then.. p4p.. he prolly has a better chin... but u do agree... floyd couldnt take the shots from ruiz that jones did... right?
The same shots Jones was able to handle would affect Floyd way more than they did Jones. I don't know how badly, because weirder things have happened. But, Floyd would be in worse shape than Jones was.
Well of course Mayweather couldn't take punches off Heavyweight he started off as Super Featherweight. Jones is one of my favorite fighters of all time, but he never had his chin tested in his prime i do remember he took 1 or 2 right hands from Ruiz, but not really flush hard punches plus Ruiz is not a hard puncher.
But i will give Jones credit for taking them punches from a man who outweighed by 30 + pounds and it was also amazing achievement winning Heavyweight title. But Mayweather also took flush punches off a man who outweighed him by over 20+ pounds, aka Oscar De La Hoya. Im pretty sure i remember seeing that some where that On fight night Oscar De La Hoya outweighed Mayweather by 20 pounds or something like that ?? and Mayweather also took flush punches from Castillo who outweighed him by 12 pounds. But Roy Jones got sparked out twice by fighters who are not considered hard punchers, yes i know he was past his prime and he would of mopped floor with both of them in his prime. But it doesn't change the fact he was sparked out by fighters who aren't considered big punchers. Im not saying Jones has weak chin because they were perfectly timed punches, but i believe Mayweather has the edge in chin department.
ill agree.... but he did take 3 FLUSH right hands from ruiz in the first round... he did
That's not what p4p means. It means, if everyone were the same size.

jones DID take hard flush punches... go watch ruiz jones... round 1... he took 3 right hands in a row from a 240 pound fighter.... floyd could not take that? no way...
and also... didnt happen til he was 35...its a little premature to say floyd has it in the chin department... and a 140 lb fighter isnt takin a 240 pound punch... just... noooo
That's not what p4p means. It means, if everyone were the same size.
And Mayweather took flush punches off hard hitting Light Middleweight. he also has took flush punches off Castillo, Corley, Chavez, Jones never took hard flush punches on the chin. Because he was so much better than his opposition. And getting sparked out twice by fighters who aren't exactly hard punchers, gives the advantage to Mayweather in chin department.

lets also not forget you guys are bringing up 35 year old roy jones and not 28 year old roy jones.... floyds 30.... lets see if were still saying the same things 5 years from now.... its not real fair to compare an out of prime roy to a prime floyd
I'm bringing up the best of them. I think, p4p, the best Floyd beats the best Roy. We'll never know, so it doesn't matter. I just see it that way.
Floyds biggest problems are allegedly in-fighters and jabbers. Roy was neither.
lol? everyone has key ingredients in there game that make them who they are... no kidding if you take it away there less of a fighter... a huge portion of mayweathers talent is based on his speed and athleticism as well.... the reason he can duck out of the way from those shots and use that shell.. is his speed
But I took out only ONE key ingredient.. And it was the same for both fighters. Take it away from Roy, he's an above average fighter. Take it away from Mayweather, he's still a REALLY good fighter. Floyd ducks shots, true. But he has a better OVERALL defense than Roy did, anyway. Shoulder rolls, the ducking, head movement. He can pick off shots. Better in-fighting, CLEARLY.
Speed and athleticism, are different, by the way. You can run fast without having athleticism. 100m dash, needs only speed. Hurdles, needs both. Big difference. Roy needed BOTH to stay on top. Mayweather would only need one of the two, speed.
Roy < Floyd

Not a hard question. Floyd is the far superior technician; Roy the greater overall athlete. Floyd will have greater staying power because he has no real flaws. Roy had plenty of defensive flaws that eventually got exploited (as many predicted) when he slowed down. That won't happen to Floyd because he is better schooled.

Mayweather. Even without his athleticism, the fundamentals and the mental prowess he had would allow Mayweather to excell. Without the athleticism, Roy Jones would be what he is today.

to say pbf has a better chin than roy is a tad ridiculous... roy DID take heavyweight right hands.... i HIGHLY doubt a true 140 lb pound fighter can take a right hand from a 240 pound fighter....
