how would Hagler have faired had he started his career at 147 ? as we know Hagler relied on his Great chin ,Heart ,& sheer strength & power would he have had to adapt his game more if he was going to be successfull moving up the weights as Leoanrd did where his strength & power maybe nullified some what due to fighting bigger & possibly stronger guys than himself
Duran did'nt wanna stand & fight Hagler at middleweight however if Duran had fought Hagler at 147 then he wouldnt have thought twice about going toe to toe with Hagler IMO ,would he have beaten Hearns or Benitez at 147
duran could tweak his game though. he boxed very well behind the jab in the esteban dejesus rubber match before turning it up in the latter rounds. he could box or brawl, just like hagler.
hagler would find it very difficult to box duran behind the jab as opposed to someone like tony sibson or vito antufermo (whose pressure did trouble hagler at times in their first bout which hagler really won), and duran was a master inside at brawling if hagler chose to fight that way.
either way, hagler has a very difficult assignment in dealing with duran.
Agreed. Come to think of it now I think I made that previous post hastily. Duran may well have beaten a smaller Hagler. As Duran was just as adaptable.
First of all, your description of Hagler in the second sentence is wrong. He was much more than some brute who relied on strength and heart, you're characterizing him with the LaMottas, Grazianos, and Marcianos, which he clearly wasn't, at least not in his prime.
As I said earlier, lots of people have that false impression of hagler.
but it was funny how he said "as we all know....".
NO, as you all DON'T KNOW!!!!
If he were the same size as Duran, I'd still take him to beat him, as Duran at smaller weights was not the style of fighter that Hagler faced at MW, he was someone who came to you and fought you, which would've been quite good for Hagler.
I'd take Leonard to beat him at 147 though were they the same size.

if Hagler was a natural WW around that time period, I still would not pick him over Leonard, or the Duran who beat Palomino and Leonard. If he were the same size as Duran, I'd still take him to beat him, as Duran at smaller weights was not the style of fighter that Hagler faced at MW, he was someone who came to you and fought you, which would've been quite good for Hagler.

And are you asking how he would fare if he were smaller? Otherwise you're asking him to cut too much weight and affect his performance.
well from what i saw Hagler's ability to absorb a punch & dish out it out was what made him the fighter he was ,not his great Boxing ability
you probably haven't watched enough hagler and have a false impression on the type of fighter he was for the majority of his career.
you're not alone, lots of people have this false impression of hagler.
BTW im talking about Hagler as a natural Welterweight
hypothetically, he'd be good in any division. he had the boxing skills, power, versatility, toughness, work ethic, etc...
for the majority of hagler's career, hagler relied on his boxing skills, his jab, counterpunching, combos, lateral movement, and brawling when necessary.
hagler did adapt as he got older, he became more of a brawler as you saw him against hearns.

he might have been successful but i dont think he would be as successful as Leonerd hearns and duran were though
i sort of agree i think Hearns height & power was what allowed him to be successfull all the way upto 175, as for Leonard it was his boxing ability ,speed footwoork etc ,im not sure if u take away Hagler's physical adavantages he would be versatile enough to adapt to achieve what Leonard did & possibly Heanrs
i see him & Duran in the same mould however style wise although Hagler was able to switch hit ,i think he would have been as successfull proabably more successfull than Duran but im not sure he would have done as well as Heanrs definetly not Leonard IMO
