Before 1984.. being a Mulitweigth Champ was worth something.. There were ONLY 8 Divisions..
1984 the IBF was the final alpahbet group to adopt the new format The WBA having done 2 years earlier.. and the WBC having done so in 1979... Though out the 80's more divisions were created to the bloated amount of 17 divisions we have today...
A 5 or 6 weight champ today.. isn't worth what it was worth historically..
And should not be given the same sway.. when judging the Multiweight champs of the past 25-30 years..
Another wise post,.... an unarguable point, I don't even think HW's can be compared to WW's and WW's cant be compared to bantamweights, let alone one twenty year era to one 60 years ago, if you do you'll find that the old fighters had all the toughness and skills to handle 97 % of todays boxers, THEY WERE VERY SKILLFUL. A Twenty round fight is almost a different sport to the VERY short 12 rds.......
Did DLT and El Jesus really say top 20?
And, this was back in 07' :lol1:
Looking at this thread. Tells you how overrated Floyd Mayweather Jr is by his extremist fans.
I disagree. Someone like Mickey Walker moved up from WW to HW and beat top fighters. Fitzsimmons and Roy Jones moved from MW to HW and won titles. Sam Langford moved from LW to HW and beat some of the best fighters ever, with a resume about 10X deeper than Floyd. Floyd will never break top 5 unless he does some incredible **** with the rest of his career, I don't think you guys realize how stacked the true top 5 are.
I'm with you mate GOOD POST !!!
i think he's top twenty for sure.wins over cotto and williams would put him in my top 15,and a middleweight title would land him top five.
I don't rate him as high as many of the greats, if we're talking 120 years. If it's 120 then how can you rate any of today's compared to those who fought in a far stronger era and had on many occasions over a 100 and up to 300 fights. The boxers of say 1916 were many times tougher and harder than today's fighters and would walk through punches with big gloves. 12 round fights rarely prove anything and suits the guy who won't stand and fight. Now for Floyd, he is a great modern day fighter, only Pacquiao is better (paquiao has been tested many times and is far improved because of it). It's not Floyd's fault that he's never been tested, what do we know about his ability to come from behind, staggered by devastating attacks, what will he do, and his chin has barely been tested,.....................................................Where I rate Floyd Mayeather Junior must wait until the end of his career, and same for Manny. in 5 or 6 years from now we'll know. Many fighters can suffer one KO and never be able to take a punch again, others become more resistant. Pac or Floyd may end up with a few more losses. At this moment I have Floyd at number 2 fighter of the century so far. Rating him over 50 years, well, I'm gonna wait till he hangs his gloves up. He may end up a lot higher, but I ain't predicting anything....
No worries. I don't feel ganged-up upon. But I look at Walker, and I see a guy who is wide open for straight stuff up the middle. I see pretty unathletic guys there.
Are you telling me that Winky Wright gets hit by that garbage he's throwing? That Bernard Hopkins wouldn't counter him to death?
gene tunney was pretty athletic to me.as far as the winkster vs the toy bull dog,i think the toy bull dog beats him in a fantasy match up.
And 98% of boxing fans couldn't tell you which of those guys were better than Hatton, Corrales and castillo.
....which is why I say that comparing across eras is always an iffy exercise.
If I tell you that Manfredy would have TKO'd Loughran, what would you say? And why do you even need to fight a guy FIVE times? Should you get more credit for fighting a guy a 4th and fifth time.. or less credit? Who knows?
Yes. I know when Pernell fought. Thanks. But the reality is that the Mount Rushmore of boxing has changed LITTLE in fifty years.
I'd laugh and realize I have been wasting time.

some mickey walker
some gene tunney
not to gang up on you but,his resume is probably the greatest ever
That as well. Coming from a natural MW as well. Actual fight footage is the only thing keeping him behind Robinson on my list. I heard it is out there as well, the Walker fight and even one with Tunney, but the anonymous guy won't give it up. What a bastard!
on mine as well, and that guy should get slapped.
^^^^^^^^^^
i think him whipping dempsey's ass in sparring should count:D
it made his promoters not want the mauler fight him,and the mauler is wanna my faves

]Again: Tell me (WITHOUT LOOKING) who Harry Greb beat. Why? Why am I not allowed to look? Does that change the fact that it's the truth, regardless if someone has memorized it all or not? I have by the way, I have his resume written down.
That's the problem. Guys created a top p4p list 50 years ago, and it's almost as if we are not allowed to move those guys off the top of that list.It won't change if the fighters don't surpass their accomplishments. Whitaker had his last fight in 2001 by the way, hardly 50 years ago.
The reality is that Tim Duncan is MUCH better than Bill Russell. Similarly, it would not surprise me if FMJ beat the snot out of Sandy Saddler or Willie Pep.Boxing is a totally different sport than Basketball, don't compare the two.
Mayweather in my opinion does beat those two(he is also bigger), though his career does not surpass the career of either of them.
skill wise i'd say number 1 judging by what we've all seen but an all time great shud be remember for more then just skillz it shud by the fighters he's beat old, young, prime, weightclasses and so on, floyd's imho started out very hungry got recognized for his talent then took the easy to ATG which i still think he would be if i had took the hard way but with all the boxing fans agreein(well most)
but i still put him top 10
Damn this forum.

to me hes 11-20, a win against cotto would make him top 10 in alot of peoples lists though, seriously. most people see cotto as basically the last stop, 2 undefeated prime p4p fighters in a row, one of who is the legit number 1 contender to the division (not a boogie man created by hype, you know who im talking about, or maybe you dont, since he never wins his big fights)
How in the world would that make him top 10?
Robinson, Greb, Armstrong, Langford, Ali, Duran, Leonard, Ross, Walker, Whitaker, Pep, Leonard, Louis, etc etc.
Which of those would he outrank?

where is floyd rank all time p4p in your opinion? | BoxingScene Community
