Usually the five fighters that come up when talking about Roy Jones Jr. ducking great competition are...
1.)Gerald McClellan

2.)Nigel Benn
http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=000739&cat=boxer
3.)Dariusz Michalczewski
http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=004141&cat=boxer
4.) Frank Liles
http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=001473&cat=boxer
5.) Chris Eubank

The thing I don't understand is why do people get angry at Roy for not fighting Gerald McClellan. If you look at his career, he got severly injured in 1995. Roy didn't really have much of a chance to fight him. Roy was just becoming a star when he beat James Toney in 1994. And then Nigel Benn, if you look at his career on boxrec, he lost 3 straight starting in 1996. Then he never faught again. Plus I heard Roy did call Benn to make a fight but Benn never called him back( he was going through a divorce). I also heard in a HBO/Jones interview that Frank Liles was offered a fight with Roy but turned it down. So in my opinion the only fighters Roy should have really faught were Michalczewski and Eubank...the others its not really his fault when you reallly look at it. Also he should have faught Hopkins again but even thats not really all his fault. Hopkins made the negoitations just as hard as Jones did. Maybe some of you guys think Roy sould have faught MCclellan and Benn from 1989-1993, but Roy was just starting off at that point. I don't know if he was ready for that kind of comp. All these guy were not at their prime at the time in which the fights could have happened. Correct me if I'm wrong...I don't know about Benn and MCclellan like some of you other guys do.
I don't think Jones-Calzaghe would be a good fight, Calzaghe is too square and it's not like Roy would stand with his toes touching Joe's toes
I think Jones has the tools to beat him handidly, get him out of there
Roy faced the same type of fighters repeatedly.....He never faced great pressure fighters,,,,,or fighters that made effective use of punching distance when Roy was cornered. Many times roy would be up against the rops, and the fighter would step inside their own punching distance and roy could easily tiel them and spin them, land those super quick flurries on the inside...If you notice roy would back straiht up like Jermaine Taylor,,,Look at how he fought vs Griffen the first time, and other fights...It is just Roy fought fighters that did not produce large punch output, or applied effective and sustained presssue.
I think DM could have made a fight wth Roy very very interesting.
GM annhilates Roy....Roy did not want any part of what Benn and GM experiended when they fought each other...Too much firepower..and roy would be touched hard if he fought GM...Great speed reach firewpower..Sure Roy was the better boxer, but Roy IMO did not want to deal with that firepower. Hell when they fought as amateurs both of them were hurt for weeks after their fight.
Collins would have been a major challenge for him as Roy Sr knew. I do not know if it was Stevie Collins but there was someone as an amateur that sparred with Roy and kO'd him. I heard it was Collins..Roy made mention of this after his 2nd Tarverfight, when he said when interviewed after the fight that he would come back he got caught with a lucky shot, and that is was not the 1st time something like this happend to him, it happened back when he was an amateur....go to YOUTube and get a copy of the end of the Tarver Jones 2nd fight.
Micheal NUNN would have beaten Roy or gotten kO'd. What many people fail to remember is that Nunn was beating Toney until he got caught...Nunn had speed, reach and power...and was south paw....Tarver had reach and was a southpaw...Not that Roy was at his peak vs Tarver, but Roy never licked to risk it...He would have to risk it vs Nunn as Nunn speed could almost match Roy's his height and reach 6'3 height vs 5"11, reach 76 vs 74 speed almost as good as roys..southpaw, and good power....One thing people dont mention is that Nunn chased roy from super middle to lightheavy....Roy vacated the super middleweight title and ignored a court request to have them too fight, via the courts stirpping roy of the title because Nunn/rocchigiani winner was the rightfull owner of the supermiddle weight belt...Roy refused to face nunn or rocchigiani , and moved up...
Benn would be a good challenge for a while,,then it could turn ugly,,,,but who knows if he lands a big shot....
So Roy was clealry the best fighter, but styles makes fights, and GM and DM and Nunn all posed very very high risk for Roy, and you now what,,,Roy never faced any of them
Nunn is the only person I could see REALLY taking it to Jones prime for prime at the time. That amalgamation of skill in one ring would be masterful to watch and would have been a great fight to say the least.
Great post!

Steve Collins is a clown. I don't really see him winning one minute against Jones unless Jones let him. That rubbish, lunging style and those girl-like punches - good chin and stubborness though
Roy Jones never ducked anybody.
Certian fights could have been made that were not due to money and ego, but it wasnt like Roy was afraid of those guys.
good to see u know your stuff... i really dont think eubank had a chance. they all pose a threat to roy but remember.. jones fought and embarrased a PRIME toney who was like #1 p4p at the time.. toney was a great fighter then
I don't quite understand what you're saying
Anyway, regarding Toney and Jones, I think Jones would struggle to land a punch on Toney near his best
Eubank had a TERRIFIC stiff jab, a Eubank-Toney fight would 100% depend on whether Toney could read it to avoid and counter because otherwise he would be grinded down
For what it's worth, I think Eubank would have only won the first four rounds against Jones
Benn had a shadow on the brain after the McClellan fight so that rules him out with a realistic chance of beating Jones (although Steve Collins said recently he and Benn would have KO'd him - then Nigel said 'No, Jones would have killed me' and Collins hasn't spoke to him since!) - his balance was shot to shit in his last five fights, horrible
Eubank is the only unorthodox orthodox fighter with a realistic chance of beating Jones over 12 rounds in boxing history, but he can't keep turning and posing or Jones would jump in and potshot and out again :)
Michalczewski? I haven't actually seen him fight
As far as ducking, Don King offered Benn and Jones $25million each which Benn accepted while Jones turned down. I believe Jones's people offered Benn $10million, but Benn had signed a new three-fight deal with King after McClellan (and lost to Malinga)
Collins out-priced himself by asking for $5million
Liles wasn't interesting
Eubank wasn't really interested in fighting Jones
The one fighter who Jones wanted nothing to do with was Michael Nunn...

woaaah...the G-man woul;d not have won a few rounds n lost 2 rounds to 10,lol...G-man had amazing knockout ability....and the fact that roy was isand foreever will be suspect where his chin is concerned, there is a fair hance that if the G-man connected,Roy would be out for the count. Steward said as much...Roy was Lucky not to Face the G-man in his prime, otherwise that career, and that long unbeaten streak...being P4P....hmmm...i doubt any of that would have happened had he faced G-man and been knocked out on his ass.
I think he would have beaten Benn,Benn was far too erratic ...and lost his cool in the ring alot...jones would have just boxed his hed off.
Collins, just wanted to make a big payday...so he aleld Jones out on almsot every tv broadcast he was on. Collins would have had his head boxed of too..he had no power in his punches, but granted he could take a few. Would have been like Calzaghe Vs Lacy.
I think Eubanks awkward style would have given Roy some problems..it would have been a flip of a coin for me. I think Eubank could have beaten him,and i think Roy could have had Eubank. Would have been a great trillogy if it happened like that. Prime for prime, its too difficult to call, cus Eubank was a clever clever, awkward opponent, with a great chin, and real knock out power...he wasnt exactly slow either. We all know RJJ brings all his skills to the table..and it wouldhave made a great bout.
RJJ should have had Hopkins again, about 3 years ago...any fight now,it just wouldnt have the same feel about it,and would be almost worthless...
RJJ prime 4 prime would have been interesting with Calzaghe. Problem being..i think Calzaghe has got better with age (broken hands not inculded)...and RJJ the oposite..so it would have been hard to ever judge them on a even footing. I would still watch a fight between them now tho..both stil very quick and skilled,i would say Calzaghe's better chin, n work rate gives him the win.
I think calzaghe peaked at about 29 it just he was never given a chance to show what he could really do against someone like Lacy or Kessler that would have defined his career at the time.
RJJ would ahve destroyed G-man at his prime with all respect. That suspect chin has only ever been caught twice neither of them were in his prime. RJJ by KO.

Truthvito,
That was a nice, well thought out and well put together post.
Personally, I would have loved to see a prime RJ vs a prime G-Man.
If memory serves me correctly, RJ was extra devastated when Gerald got badly injured because they were pals. I think even if G-Man would have stayed healthy & active, I don't think they would have fought. It was not so much one ducking the other as much as a mutual friendship. Sort of like Joe Frazier & Ken Norton never fighting because they were close buddies. They never were accused of ducking each other.
I agree with the other brothers here who said that RJ at least gave the appearance of only ducking Steve Collins. Although I believe in my heart that Jones would have beat him. I have no real clue as to why them two never did fight.

eubank ducked roy......admitted it himslef, so did benn, and he lost to malinga, who roy destroyed...
michalczewski ran away scared after watching roy kill Hill with a body shot...
roccieganni dropped down of a scheduled fight with roy (roy had to fight david telesco intead)
hopkins ducked jones
mcclellan shouldnt even be considered...
McClellan beat Roy as an Ameteur and I would've like to see RJJ fight steve Collins because he had one of the best chins I have ever seen
