Just watched taylor pavlik cuz i was at school and my pops deleted the fight off the tivo, so i got it from the vids section on this site. My observations: obviously taylor is one of the most athletically gifted fighters going, great speed and power. But taylor doesnt even try to defend himself, and it seems like he loses to most decent fighters with power. imo a terrible waste of talent because he is only half a fighter. Pavlik didnt impress me talent wise, i think he is a good fighter with great heart and power but imo he is too slow to ever be great. i was amazed by how he was able to survive that brutal onslought in round 2, which did make me a Pavlik fan. I will deff watch the rematch on the comupter or at a party but im not paying 50$ to see an incomplete taylor and a good fighter in pavlik who is too slow to really impress me. maybe pavlik isnt that slow and taylor is just a freak, but that would just make taylor all the more dissapointing in my eyes. what are your thoughts?
You late on this one, but here's my thoughts. Taylor's got some real potential but he only defends himself when he needs to (like when he's against the ropes). He could be a better counter puncher and more alert. But once he gets that killer jab going, it's hard too stop him. Sometimes he's boring to watch because he dances around the ring so much. But i think he's got enough heart to win the rematch.
He always wants to be the counter puncher but needs to realize that he cannot let Pavlik back him uop and put him on the ropes because you see what he got. What he needs to to is come forward and try and back Pavlik up, but he is not that type of fighter and I beleive he will get knocked out in the rematch as well. He will definately fight more cautiously in the rematch, because you cant suffer a knockout like that and not have it in the back of your mind, and by being to cautious and not agressive enough could get him in trouble as well. Either way he loses the rematch.
I thought the scorecards looked like another Taylor rip off. I thought he lost one of the Hopkins fights, the Winky fight, and the Spinks fight was close. Im not saying Pavlik is great, he has only beaten two good fighters so far. I dont even know if he has the ability to be great, but he is very good. He may not be skilled like Taylor, but he gets the job done.

Couldn't agree more. Taylor lost that fight more than Pavlik won it. If Taylor was mentally tough at all, Pavlik is done in that 2nd or 3rd round. There's a huge gap in talent there. I just don't see anything skillfull about Pavlik who walks forward and eats punches hoping he outlasts the other guy. I don't know if Taylor wins a rematch because he doesn't obey corners or live up to his potential, but the fact that he almost had Pavlik out in round 2 means he SHOULD have won and SHOULD win a rematch, but like you said, he's only 1/2 a fighter.
Bullshit!!!! Pavlik took that fight. taylor had his chance to take him out and he wasn't able to, that had nothing to do with him not being mentally tough, give Pavlik credit for that, for going down and having the heart to get up and come back to knock taylor out. Taylor had many flaws and bad habits and his defense was one of them which is why he was alwasy so careful in fighting opponents that had no pop. Don't get me wrong he fougt some very good competition but B-Hop,Winky,Ouma,and Spinks are not known for a big punch. Say wat you wanty about Pavlik he still knocked tayolor the fuck out and will do the same in the rematch.

agreed, and i give him credit for a great win in what was the most exiting fight i saw all year.
i dont understand that at all, pavlik showed incredible heart and great power. he is a good fighter. i just dont see what else he did that fight that would make him great. i dont really think anyone is ripping on pavlik by not saying he is great. maybe i missed something, why is pavlik great and not just pretty good with some problems with d and not much speed? and what do you make of pavlik getting murdered on all the cards at the time of the final knockdown?

are you referring to a 40 year old bhop, or a 36 year old winky wright, im just joking, i dont know much about his career, the two wins against bhop are his best wins im assuming though?
Both those guys were p4p ranked at the time(not sure about hopkins, but he was on p4p lists AFTERWARDS so that tells you something). I would say the Hopkins wins are the best though, yeah.
Taylor is the more skilled fighter, I doubt anyone would disagree with that. But you guys are giving Pavlik NO credit for the win. If he hadnt got cocky in the 2nd round and stuck his chin out it would have looked like a very one sided fight in favor of Pavlik. Taylor unloaded on him with everything he had and couldnt put him away. Im on the record already on this, but Pavlik knocks him out in a more one sided fight this time. No way Taylor comes back from that fight and is the same. He threw everything he had at Pavlik and still got knocked out.
He outboxed taylor, despite the robbery that the judges had preplanned for him in the fight. Taylor is no boxing schmuck either, he held his own/won against some of the best ever.

he doesnt have the IQ to be great because he is stubborn if that makes any sense at all. he hasnt developed as a boxer mentally resulting in bad decisions in the ring. the fact that he wont listen to his corner doesnt help. It almost seemed that he started to believe all the criticism he had been getting after that 2nd round. as if he knew he was beat already and was hoping for something to bail him out or a big mistake on Pavlik's part. If Jermaine ever got in "the zone", he would be incredible.
I remember somebody saying before they'd like to see Taylor train with Floyd Mayweather, Sr. to improve his defense, anybody think it'd work?
worth a shot imo

yeah that makes a lot of sense and you are probably right, i just thought it could be because taylor isnt too bright, but a great corner could make even a dumb fighter have some semblance of a defense. im not saying taylor is dumb, but he obviously does have a low boxing iq like u said.

That would require Taylor to actually listen to his trainer. If Manny screaming at him cant get through I dont know how much luck Sr. would have. But you never know. Taylor with a great defense would be scary.

in your opinion, is it because he is stubborn or he just doesnt have the boxing iq to be great? i watched both of the bhop fights but i havent seen taylor all that much. imo opinion mental toughness and intelligence play such a huge role, and it looks like taylor just doesnt have it. look at zab and floyd, pretty similar in terms of sheer athletic ability, zab is even more fluid imo, just comes down to the mental game.

taylor is his worst own enemy. he had everything he needed to defeat pavlik but didnt make it connect together. he is ovbiously the better boxer/fighter which is why i think he has a great chance of beating pavlik again, but that can only happen of taylor allows himself to be great.

its definitely worth the watch... mickey ward and arturro gatti are far from complete fighters as well... but id watch it 10 out of 10 times...
they delivered a great fight... talent or no talent

lol you guys are just trying to take away from what pavlik accomplished. you dont know boxing.
you are right, pavlik is a very fast fighter who doesnt eat very many punches at all, he is number 3 on my p4p list, im sorry.
