We're been hearing lately on the boards about Roy Jones Jr's technical boxing skills & his natural talent. I'd like, & I'm sure others would like to know what you think about about his technical skill set. Alot of people are under the impression that he didn't have good technical skills or just relied on his natural ability. Since you sparred with him & have known him since his amateur days, what is your opinion of that & also his natural ability. Also how would you rate Mayweather Jr's technical skills & natural ability to Jones or are they even comparable.
I really like Oliver even tho I'm not a huge fan of those lower weights.......And I love Bad Chad. What happened to Rivera? He has gone down hill rather quickly......He looked so good against Garcia I think it was and then Simms demolished him and didn't he lose his latest fight also?
Jose IMO peaked with the Garcia fight. He was like a machine that night, everything fell into place for him. The style was right too because Garcia was a strong puncher who looked for the KO and Jose loved that. In his next two fights against slick boxing southpaws he just couldn't get off it seemed.
I don't find a really big difference training fighters of different weights, no. The transition has been smooth because I was constntly training and traveling with amateurs even when i was between fights in the early 90's. Roy and Floyd, well, RJ has a much bigger overall arsenal, I believe. Their level of overall skills maybe similar but I think Roy was much more explosive, etc etc.
I am currently training a few amateurs plus IBO 122 pound champion Mike Oliver and NABF cruiserweight champion Matt Godfrey. I also work in the corner for unbeaten 130 pounder Matt Remillard. I also used to train WBA 154 pound champion Jopse Rivera, former NABF 135 pound champion Israel Cardona and current WBC 175 pound champion Chad Dawson
thank you for taking time to answer our questions :boxing:
I have a couple of more questions for ya Iceman:
- is their a difference between training a lighter fighter ( example 122) and a heavier fighter ( example 175)?
- how is the transition from fighter to trainer?
I was there live (been to 19 of his pro fights) and right before he dropped him I told my friend "he's setting him up for the right hand" and boom, maybe three seconds later there it was.
Do you think Mayweather Jr.'s skills or natural talent compare to Jones in his prime? Also I like Mike Mike Oliver too. He has some fast hands.

Thanks for that Ice. I hope our posters here see this. That Sosa knockdown was incredibile & accurate.

Ice Man takes time out of the day to post here & most appreciate that. It's also known that he's "retired" & has been busy training fighters. That posters reply came off as disrespectful & smug if you ask me. If I'm mistaken about that then it's my apologies to him.
yeah i always enjoy reading what ice has to say, he offers a great insight and its cool to have a guy connected so well with boxing actually post here and use his proper identity. lets call a truce eh and hope that geezer appreciates him as well?? take it easy mate
well to me he was asking a question about ice's career.... not really a big deal, unless you felt he was being deliberately obtuse??? if thats the case then i apologise but my take was he was just asking a normal question

Get off my high horse? I didn't know I was on one. If you didn't pick up on what dude was doing then you should just stay out of it.

dude relax he was just asking what happened with his boxing career... whats your problem?? i dont see why ice would be offended by that question so get off your high horse

My man, that's very disrespectful to talk to a former pro fighter & a current trainer like that. You'd be lucky to accomplish half of what he's done in his career as a boxer/trainer. Now I'd be willing to put up real money that you wouldn't talk that that to his face like that so give the man the same respect.

Well, for me, RJ's technique is VERY GOOD...many people say he uses his athletic abilities more than technique. I have seen so called experts claim he has no technique and only relies on athleticism. RIDICULOUS. I have boxed with many of the best fighters in the world and RJ'S technique and ring inteligence is as good as any one of them!! I watch him fight and he does some amazingly "athletic looking" things in the ring but they are all driven by technique, foot placement, the proper setting up of his opponents etc etc. The way he set up Sosa for the right hand that dropped him, the way he set up Tate forthe hook that dropped him, etc etc etc
Thanks for that Ice. I hope our posters here see this. That Sosa knockdown was incredibile & accurate. I also remember seeing him fight Reggie Johnson fight & how he set him up beautifully. I think Johnson threw a lazy jab out there & Jones countered him so fast with a 1-2 that dropped him. My mouth hit the floor on how he was able to counter/place his punches so well.
very nice so what happened with ur pro career?
