I was just wondering if anyone could help me convince my parents to let me become an amateur boxer? Every time I bring the subject up they always say no.
that's the last thing you want to say. Just tell them its something you like and its something that can keep you busy and out of trouble. but really just tell them its something you really love and really want to do it. explain the headgear and the trainers around and how everything is safety oriented.
It worked, cause they knew it was true. And it helped me too, because if it wasnt for wrestling and boxing i would of been caught up in that crowd because i wouldnt of had a reason to not to get into it.
Another thing you can do is show them statistics on brain injuries and concussions in football and in boxing. But don't do that right away. Tell them that your boxing is for fitness for when your on the field, and then let things move along smoothly.
For the record my mother hates that I box, and I'm frigging 30!
How old are you? Either way it should be what you want to do. You'll regret you never went when your older and really wish you had. Just go without their conscent. I did it. I asked my mother and she said hell no. I said ok, I'm going anyway. She said fine, but if anything happens, don't say I gave you permission or was ok with it. I said ok. So I went on my own.
Majority of it is muscle mass but some of it is fat, but I have been benching around 315ish and have been working out alot lately too.
It would be hard to train off all that muscle and get you working smoothly. Football is completely different to boxing in terms of the demands on your body. Both require explosive strength of course but boxing requires more endurance. Two minutes is a hell of a long time to throw punches for.
I personally think the best thing to do is to stay in school and box and train to stay fit and healthy, but if you have a deep love for it then I don't think there is much your parents can do.
By the way nice sig Mindbat.
I'm im 16 turning 17 in February and im 6'3-6'4 about 315 normally im playing football but id like to box.
Do you have a lot of muscle mass or a lot of body fat? Either way one of them would have to go, or you'll gas really quickly. You're big, no doubt, but if you do start boxing then you'll want to get down to around 260 eventually.
There's a 300 lbs guy at my gym, and he's the most dangerous puncher in there. For about thirty seconds. But I'm helping him to work it out and he works really hard. He'll be a killer by the time we're done with him!
damn youd have some serious power. you should definitly join up or failing that you can get caught fighting and say you have been doing it for years without your parents knowing or start getting angry at stupid things so people will want you to channel your aggression.
bey yh definitly join up you sound huge
noooooo......he's a "little" overweight. You have a lot of work to do. These two sports will conflict with each other. You can box but you'll have to give up football.
Tell them you just want to work out. Get fit, hit the bags etc. If you like it then you can work from there. Once they see that you get fulfillment from the sport they'll be more supportive.
i told them it's either this or i get caught up in the drug crowd.

Explain to them that, most of the time, the sport doesnt even involve contact. 95% of what your doing is learning self discipline and learning to control your body. The other part which does involve the contact can be rough, but serious and long lasting injury is much more prevalent in other sports. I think boxing is about 8th on the list of most dangerous sports. I mean, just make sure you dont try to jump into too fast, or not give it the time and discipline it deserves, or you could get hurt. The hours you put in at the gym are hours that you arent getting in trouble. They are hours where you are learning about yourself and what you are capable of doing, even when it is tough. It will help to build character, self respect, dignity, and self worth. If you tell them this, and they still dont let you, just do what sugar ray robinson did, and hide it from them and fight under a different name.
